Simple medical procedure

castaway$ - 10-16-2012 at 10:25 AM

Heading to Baja in December for 6 weeks and I am considering having a somewhat simple procedure while there, removal of a nasal polyp. My ENT here wants $8,000 to remove a skin tag from my nose! I have asked all of the questions and it seems like a simple straight forward procedure- cut the skin tag out and stop the bleeding.
We will be all over Baja so I'm looking for suggestions on safe facilities to do this procedure, any recommendations?

EnsenadaDr - 10-16-2012 at 10:57 AM

As always, I recommend Seguro Popular for Americans, which is free in Ensenada. Once examined by a primary physician, you can be referred to an ear, nose and throat doctor that will do the procedure free of charge. But any certified credentialed ear, nose or throat private pay doctor (known as an otolaringologo in Mexico) can do it. I know of several good OTL's in Ensenada. You also might try steroidal nose sprays first which might shrink the polyp. It can be also done as a local procedure depending on the size of the polyp for a few US hundred dollars or less.

Gal who plays soccer and has had her nose broken 3 times in 21 years of life has a nose job with the passages cleared out last December by Dr. Camarillo - the ear nose and throat Dr. - in Constitucion - for 30,000 pesos - and was delighted with the results.

EnsenadaDr - 10-16-2012 at 11:37 AM

yes, generally a "nose job" runs around $3000 American dollars.

Dr. Dennis, I think you're going toooo tooooo low. He's in Oregon, so you should ask for a couple pounds of that wild salmon from the Columbia River, and your shrimp. I'm just saying...

removing "those things" from the nose is very dangerous...

the membrane in the nose is really thin and close to the brain

i wouldnt skimp on the doctor

they use something called the "nibbler"
and they need to put a bannana sized sponge in there for several weeks to heal the repair

it's not as easy as it seems

the "membrane" to the brain...

EnsenadaDr - 10-16-2012 at 11:52 AM

Actually it is a very thin bone known as the ethmoid bone. Sometimes they use a metal snare, which is like a very sharp noose that they tighten around the stem of the polyp, and pull it out. Other times there are many little polyps that need to be scraped out of the nasal cavity. Then a patient would need general anesthesia. I assisted in many nasal operations in the Military Hospital with the specialist, generally if you have the right tools and have alot of patience, there is no danger, but blood pressure during extensive nasal surgery needs to be brought extremely low by an anesthesiologist, and monitored constantly, to keep bleeding to a minimum. I think the best way to go is using steroid spray and see if that works first.

Nothing but the best in my garage........er......I mean OR.

castaway$ - 10-16-2012 at 12:02 PM

I have been using the steroids and it doesn't work. I have been examined by my ENT and there is only 1 polyp. I have had two sinus surgeries in the past for Rhino somethng something so I,m not really afraid of the procedure, if I could get some nail clippers up to it I'd cut the thing off myself and call it good.

fandango - 10-16-2012 at 12:04 PM

The polyp needs to be biopsied. It can be a type that can become cancerous and does grow back. Also, if it is attached to that bone, it is not as simple a procedure to remove.
This polyp can also be in the sinus cavity under your eye. Not as "simple" a procedure to remove from there.

castaway$ - 10-16-2012 at 12:14 PM

If I shine a light and I can see it it's not real deep in the nasal cavity. I have always heard that "if" you go to the right doctors in Baja they are very competent and thats who I am looking for, not Dennis the garage doc with a pair of scissors and a soldering iron to stop the bleeding. Sorry Dennis, I might still give you some shrimp for the laugh

EnsenadaDr - 10-16-2012 at 06:25 PM

Don't let Dennis fool you, he can't stand the sight of blood, but according to M, he is crustaceous on the outside, but pussycat creamy on the inside...sounds a little risque to me!!

it ain't "simple," you sure you want to choose your surgeon/hospital based on price? try steroids for a while, then when obamacare kicks in you should be able to buy affordable insurance in USA w/o exclusion of pre-existing conditions,... and get procedure done in a good hospital in USA.

if you do oral steroids to knock it down in size, followed by nasal mist steroids, you can keep polyps under control for a while, until you manage to get insurance.

EnsenadaDr - 10-17-2012 at 07:05 AM

He said the steroids aren't working Goat, aren't you reading? I'd like to know myself when Obamacare supposedly is going to kick in myself...what was the exact date? Or is he just using it as leverage so he can get re=elected? He signed it into law a few years back...so what's the hold up?

So how do you know if it is a direct result of Obamacare or a good Social worker getting the patient Medicare or Medicaid?? Mind you, I could care less who is elected President at this point.

There I go assuming again. There use to be a series of commercials with a guy in an OR and the nurse asks him a question about the surgery and he replies, "Oh, I'm not a Dr, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night!"

It sounded more interesting then simply asking if you are a Doctor?

EnsenadaDr - 10-17-2012 at 06:43 PM

Really, it sounded more like an insult.
