Blockade of road north of Pescadero

bajajudy - 10-27-2012 at 02:09 PM

From the Western Onion:

Highway Blockade In Pescadero - According to a number of reports we received within the last two hours, there is a protest and road closure on the main highway near the North end of Pescadero. At this time, no cars or foot traffic are being permitted to pass through and are being turned away. A community blockade of the highway was started last night, and is reported to be in response to an incident where a local man had been accused of murdering his daughter's boyfriend. The man was reportedly set free by the police without charge. There are also rumors that a community official was bribed to assist in the release, then was later dismissed when the bribe was uncovered. The blockade is apparently well organized by several members of the local community, including friends and family of the victim, and is intended to protest the murder and the alledged corruption surrounding the suspect's release.

No buses, delivery trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, or pedestrians are being allowed to leave or enter Todos Santos by way of the highway, although there was a report of some buses finding their way through Pescadero and around the blockade. The protest and blockade will reportedly continue throughout the weekend. There was no police presence as of an hour ago although it's assumed that the authorities are probably aware of the protest by now and may move to clear it from the highway.

None of these details could be confirmed as of this moment, but the blockade is real and travelers are advised to avoid this area and seek alternate routes. - The Baja Western Onion, The Baja Western Onion

Dad was mad.

DavidE - 10-27-2012 at 02:58 PM

They'll let them rant and roar for awhile then the cops will arrive with bullhorns, the rhetoric will bellow, the people will move and the traffic will flow. Very very common on the other side. The businesses in Pescadero will like the extra loot, already late truck deliveries will have The Perfect Excuse.

pointdog - 10-27-2012 at 03:17 PM

The blockade will come down but the outrage in the community will not abate as easily. It's been a true tragedy and a real travesty of justice.

Katiejay99 - 10-27-2012 at 04:33 PM

The outrage of this murder is across the culture line. The boy that was killed was well known by both Mexicans and Non-Mexicans. He worked at Baja Beans, a very popular eating and hanging out place here. He was a great kid, full of life and doing good things. He was a keeper. We are all very sad about what happened.

Curt63 - 10-27-2012 at 04:53 PM

We saw "Exige Justicia" stickers regarding this matter on lots of cars in and around Pescadero this week.

According to a local gringo, the father was a wealthy landowner and the young man was a "commoner".

Local Mexicans allege there were payments.

Very tragic. I hope justice exists.

rts551 - 10-27-2012 at 04:59 PM

Sad...

The rumor is 4,000,000 pesos, it also doesn't hurt that his cousin is a senador for BCS.

Thats a lot of mordida buy anybody's standard

merlin - 10-28-2012 at 06:37 AM

Anyone know if it is still blocked this morning?

Santiago - 10-28-2012 at 07:59 AM

This kind of stuff drives me nucking futz. Here is the question I would like answered - where is the $4,000,000 pesos, or whatever it was, right now - where? Who has it?

DavidE - 10-28-2012 at 08:20 AM

IMAGINE inside the oficinas de gobernacion in La Paz...

"Chucho, why is my secretary getting all these telephone calls about some kind of a bloqeado in Pescadero?"

"It's a protest about a killing. The people are upset"

"Was it the police? Our police?"

"No señor, it was (name), of course you know him, and how he supports you"

"And what is this, the report of cuatro milliones de pesos pagado?

"That must be pure chisme señor"

"Did you ask the ministerio about this?"

"No señor"

"Well madre de dios! You get up there and find out if there is any truth to this!"

"Si señor"

The people of Pescadero did what Mexicanos do when they are upset. They blocked the artery feeding the biggest cash cow in the state, and started a rumor that was positively assured of getting the gobernacion interested, very, very interested. Forty million would have been absurd. Four hundred thousand, just would not be enough. No, it had to be just right, four million.

The above comment is not suggesting a murder was not committed. It also does not suggest that mordida was not paid. It does however offer an idea of the mechanics of what actually took place as far as getting "someone's" attention over their wrath.

The locals tell me the bad guy has been arrested after last week's protest. Anyone see an article in the Sudcaliforniano? Maybe a La Paz local? Wealthy family and a Senador in the family?!! The Hwy 19 blockade was taken down Sunday afternoon. Exige Justicia. Tio

Further to the 1st post regarding the initial incident....The accused is a farmer and the family is a conservative, traditional Mexican family. He discovered the 19 year-old victim with his 14 year-old daughter. In a fit of rage he shot him with an air gun, not a hand gun. What are the chances that he would kill him? How one moment can ruin so many lives....

watizname - 10-31-2012 at 08:53 AM

14year old girl,---- 19 year old guy???? Mighta popped him myself. Not trying to be funny, but just sayin.

captkw - 10-31-2012 at 09:23 AM

What kinda of cathlic sicko are you ?? that is normal the world over !!! turn off your TV & set down your bible and look out side..............GET A GRIP !!!

Lee - 10-31-2012 at 10:43 AM

IF I had a daughter, she would NOT be dating a 19 y.o. Any dates with classmates would be chaperoned until she was 18 y.o. Any problems, she's packed off to a boarding school far away. Just saying....

The daughter was NOT 14, I attended her qinceañera a year ago.

monoloco - 10-31-2012 at 03:34 PM

Also, for the record, the father did not only shoot the victim, he also took him into the monte and dumped him while still alive. The young man also suffered more injuries than just the pellet gun shot wound. He would probably have got away with the crime if he hadn't got his truck stuck when disposing of the body. When caught, the father tried to claim that he thought the victim was an intruder in his home and shot him without knowing who he was. This was a brutal act that has shocked the community.

Petey - 10-31-2012 at 04:15 PM

I've heard from a couple of people that the alleged murderer turned himself in Sunday night and is in jail in La Paz. I've heard a variety of versions of what may have happened, but they all include other injuries (such as a heavy beating with golf clubs before the shot) including preplanning. Haven't heard it was merely a surprised, enraged reaction, nor that the shot from the air-gun was the only wound. One hears a lot around these parts though, so take it for what its worth.

latina - 10-31-2012 at 04:50 PM

Sorry if my post irked you, monoloco...another person asked if anyone had read what was in the paper. That's what was in the paper. Not that I believe everything I read in the paper, God forbid, but until then no one was offering up any insider information. Apparently you have knowledge the rest of us aren't party to....so it would seem that the whole story is far more convoluted than first reported.

monoloco - 10-31-2012 at 10:41 PM

Latina, I am not "irked" at anyone, I am just saddened by this senseless act that left a young man dead and two families devastated.

latina - 11-1-2012 at 07:17 AM

It is without question a tragedy for the families and your community.

Not Catholic. BUT I DO have a grandaughter, and if some sleazy 19 year old kid seduced her, and I caught him, I don't know if I could restrain myself from bringing serious hurt to him.. Sex does make the world go round, but I think the age difference at this time of their lives is a little much. It is obvious that you have never had a beautiful little girl around to be the joy of your life. If you condone this type of conduct by young men, with little girls, then YOU'RE the sicko and I wouldn't want you even in my neighborhood. Guys like these are the ones we have to protect our children from. I find it hard to blame her father.

The kid was not "sleazy" and the girl was sixteen or close to it. It's a different culture here and it's not unusual for fifteen and sixteen year old girls to enter into relationships. He was a very nice young man and didn't deserve to be brutalized and left to die in the desert.

WOW !!

captkw - 11-1-2012 at 04:55 PM

I guess it never crossed your mind that maybe she suduced him ?? and I have raised daughters..and I dont know enough of the story to make a judgement !!! but your slinging your BS pre judgement towards me says volumes !!! have another shot !!! and Have A GREAT DAY !!!! K&T

tiotomasbcs - 11-1-2012 at 05:10 PM

My friends tell me the young man brutalized was well liked and working to move up in his world! Life and love here in the country means lots of 16 years get pregnant and are usually accepted into family and the children are loved!! The locals love Novelas and sex for all our kids is forefront in TV, Movies, & music in all our lives--Mexico & US. Sad Story that plays out in many ways. This will not stop the passion & lust of our youth but violence is not acceptable! God Bless us All. Tio

watizname - 11-1-2012 at 08:36 PM

Apparently the girl's father didn't have the same cavalier attitude towards his daughter that you guys do. If he was 19 and hitting on a little girl who was "16 or close to it", {no matter how thin you cut it, it's still 15} he is definitely sleazy, in my book, looking for an easy mark. I still find it hard to fault the father. I think that it is especially nasty of you captkw to call her integrity into question, since by your own admission you don't know all the facts. I certainly don't, and all I was saying that given the same situation, I'm not sure I would be able to restrain myself.

YOU have a social problem watzisname !!!

captkw - 11-2-2012 at 03:37 AM

Have you been in a box your whole life ??? Girls get horny Too !! And this is The last response too your BS..Read the posts from the nomads that know this guy and girl !! I am not on/scene or privey to the stiuation...But when a whole village comes out and closes a road down in protest !! I will go with backing the major population...that this kid of whatever age (dosnt matter) was savagelly killed..and NO his age is not the issue!!!so stand on you soapbox and yell at anyone driving by ...but for me I'm rolling up the window !! BTW local folks do not close down the road without good cause...get a GRIP !!! K&T:cool:

I'm sure the Taliban would agree with you.

Mulegena - 11-2-2012 at 07:41 AM

May healing come to the village and the heart of the young woman
who lost what may have been her first love. May she recover to love again.

Tonight I'll go to the panteon here in Mulege.
I have no family buried here, but a couple of friends.
I'll take food and flowers and place them on a grave.
I'll reflect on loved ones who have passed on:
my mother and father, my great-aunt, Stan from Asuncion so recently.
I'll light a candle for this young man's soul.

Its my prayer that we all learn to live peacefully.

I think you have it backwards Monoloco. The Taliban would kill the girl by stoning or a shot to the head, and the boy would be congratulated.
