Blockade of road north of Pescadero
From the Western Onion:
Highway Blockade In Pescadero - According to a number of reports we received within the last two hours, there is a protest and road closure on the
main highway near the North end of Pescadero. At this time, no cars or foot traffic are being permitted to pass through and are being turned away. A
community blockade of the highway was started last night, and is reported to be in response to an incident where a local man had been accused of
murdering his daughter's boyfriend. The man was reportedly set free by the police without charge. There are also rumors that a community official was
bribed to assist in the release, then was later dismissed when the bribe was uncovered. The blockade is apparently well organized by several members
of the local community, including friends and family of the victim, and is intended to protest the murder and the alledged corruption surrounding the
suspect's release.
No buses, delivery trucks, motorcycles, bicycles, or pedestrians are being allowed to leave or enter Todos Santos by way of the highway, although
there was a report of some buses finding their way through Pescadero and around the blockade. The protest and blockade will reportedly continue
throughout the weekend. There was no police presence as of an hour ago although it's assumed that the authorities are probably aware of the protest by
now and may move to clear it from the highway.
None of these details could be confirmed as of this moment, but the blockade is real and travelers are advised to avoid this area and seek alternate
routes. - The Baja Western Onion, The Baja Western Onion

Dad was mad.
US Marines: providing enemies of America an opportunity to die for their country since 1775.
What I say before any important decision.
F*ck it.

They'll let them rant and roar for awhile then the cops will arrive with bullhorns, the rhetoric will bellow, the people will move and the traffic
will flow. Very very common on the other side. The businesses in Pescadero will like the extra loot, already late truck deliveries will have The
Perfect Excuse.

The blockade will come down but the outrage in the community will not abate as easily. It's been a true tragedy and a real travesty of justice.

The outrage of this murder is across the culture line. The boy that was killed was well known by both Mexicans and Non-Mexicans. He worked at Baja
Beans, a very popular eating and hanging out place here. He was a great kid, full of life and doing good things. He was a keeper. We are all very sad
about what happened.

We saw "Exige Justicia" stickers regarding this matter on lots of cars in and around Pescadero this week.
According to a local gringo, the father was a wealthy landowner and the young man was a "commoner".
Local Mexicans allege there were payments.
Very tragic. I hope justice exists.
No worries

doesn't hurt that his cousin is a senador for BCS.

IMAGINE inside the oficinas de gobernacion in La Paz...
"Chucho, why is my secretary getting all these telephone calls about some kind of a bloqeado in Pescadero?"
"It's a protest about a killing. The people are upset"
"Was it the police? Our police?"
"No señor, it was (name), of course you know him, and how he supports you"
"And what is this, the report of cuatro milliones de pesos pagado?
"That must be pure chisme señor"
"Did you ask the ministerio about this?"
"No señor"
"Well madre de dios! You get up there and find out if there is any truth to this!"
"Si señor"
The people of Pescadero did what Mexicanos do when they are upset. They blocked the artery feeding the biggest cash cow in the state, and started a
rumor that was positively assured of getting the gobernacion interested, very, very interested. Forty million would have been absurd. Four hundred
thousand, just would not be enough. No, it had to be just right, four million.
The above comment is not suggesting a murder was not committed. It also does not suggest that mordida was not paid. It does however offer an idea of
the mechanics of what actually took place as far as getting "someone's" attention over their wrath.

The locals tell me the bad guy has been arrested after last week's protest. Anyone see an article in the Sudcaliforniano? Maybe a La Paz local?
Wealthy family and a Senador in the family?!! The Hwy 19 blockade was taken down Sunday afternoon. Exige Justicia. Tio

Further to the 1st post regarding the initial incident....The accused is a farmer and the family is a conservative, traditional Mexican family. He
discovered the 19 year-old victim with his 14 year-old daughter. In a fit of rage he shot him with an air gun, not a hand gun. What are the chances
that he would kill him? How one moment can ruin so many lives....

IF I had a daughter, she would NOT be dating a 19 y.o. Any dates with classmates would be chaperoned until she was 18 y.o. Any problems, she's
packed off to a boarding school far away. Just saying....
