The Best Of Baja......Campgrounds

CortezBlue - 3-14-2013 at 10:31 AM

Ok, after posting the best of RV parks, DK asked about campgrounds, so lets start a separate category for campgrounds. I would like to keep this list of campgrounds associated with an organized location and not a camping spot on the beach, we can add a separate posting for the best camp spots off the beaten path.

I would like to categorize it by Pacific and Sea of Cortez.

Please provide the following, if possible:

1. Campground Name

2. Campground style, Rustic or Facilities

2. Location, if you can provide either GPS coordinates or a google map

3. Any information regarding pricing, contact information, web page etc.

4. Your personal experience, why you liked it or didn't. And when you went, what time of year, local attractions etc.

Thanks

Once I have these compiles I will repost them in a organized data base

I'll add one. However, when you get to the list of off-the-beaten path camp spots, I won't reveal my secrets!

Los Olivos campground, San Quintin. Cost is $80 pesos for one person, not sure about the cost for more than one person. Clean, with playground, showers. Located in an olive grove, fenced, next to dirt city street which can be a bit noisy, but usually quiets down after dark. Walking distance to Jardines restaurant down the street. Happy hour there 4 - 7. Unusually good birding. The 3 times I have stayed there, only 1 or 2 other campers. See signs on Hwy. 1.

Campo/Playa/Rancho Nuevo Mazatlan

David K - 3-15-2013 at 10:16 AM

Cortez side, near San Felipe, about 23 miles south, kilometer marker 32.

Shade tree camping (the only forest next to a beach in Baja!), Showers (unheated), Flush toilets...

Baja Nomad Matomi Run President's Day Weekend Group Camp 2004:

When we couldn't get onto Shell Island, in 2006 as it was surrounded by water, as it occasionally does, we camped at Nuevo Mazatlan with Hotschott and Val...

Steve 'Hotschott' at the old well, 'AGUA DE CHALE',
which has got a new brick extension
and capped for safety by present owner of Nuevo Mazatlan, Javier.

Haven't stayed there recently but Punta Chivato I hear is still open. Trash pickup was provided and a few holy palapas with some moorages in front of the camp. Look out for sting rays.

Camp Beluga, Gonzaga Bay

Campo Beluga has a nice set up with palapas, flush toilets and showers.
It is located just over a mile south of Alfonsina's and Rancho Grande.

My trip report Belugs comment from President's Day weekend 2007:
We stayed at Campo Beluga (1.2 miles south of Alfonsina's Pemex/ Rancho Grande store) and Baja Angel and I were VERY IMPRESSED! Palapas, flush toilets, showers(not heated)... $15 per night.

Try San Lucas Cove. The campground is now kept very clean, fresh hot water, a restraunt on the weekends that matches Rays. Good spot when going north or south. $10 a night.

We drove through SLC on our return trip. I agree that it appears to be well kept. Beachfront all seemed to be permanent folks. Easy access and turn-around.

Can anything beat Guadalupe canyon, nope

David K - 3-18-2013 at 08:31 AM

Have not returned since family shut off water to Arturo's camp after our last trip in 2008. Do you have any updates? Only Arturo's had private camp sites, very special indeed.

Are there

One of my favorite's is Campo Renee, between Visciano and san Ignacio. Anybody have some pick's to share?

Fred - 9-5-2013 at 03:34 PM

I like the one next to San Lucas Cove. Friendly and cheaper.

La Jolla Beach Camp is the best on the Pacific side. Just a few miles South of Ensenada.

I for one am hoping this thread gets traction. With the extent of knowledge here, it could turn into a list of real value for my proposed trips down the peninsula. If only I had this kind of information in the old days.

Mula - 9-5-2013 at 04:05 PM

There is a campground with running water, bathrooms and showers in San Nicolas owned by Terry Bastida.

Problem is communication.

There is a store, church, medical clinic and school in San Nicolas and fishing.

Nope. They are all closed and gringos are fleeing Baja. Jeez, people, do you have internet? :) Open "Moon Travel", or Ontheroadin etc...

Re: San Lucas Cove. So-so. One big camp, no waterfront spots for transients. Water hookups (sometimes), no electrical. And a smaller camp - much smaller - adjacent at the North, don't know whether it's "friendlier", but usually it's so empty that it's scary. Laguna turns into a shallow swamp half the time, only in medium-high tide you can launch the boat. And then there is a Playa few miles South, "a dog town", they probably don't take transients, same problem with boat launch, if not worse. The town of Sta Rosalia has become rather congested since they started digging out the remaining copper in the mine, due to Chinese demand. I wonder what happens to all those people, their houses and businesses in 10-15 years after all the copper will have been shipped to China.

About 10 miles north of Punta Abreojos and 2.8 miles east of the pavement on an easy flat road... Photos taken July 2007:

Ojo de Liebre

tripledigitken - 9-6-2013 at 08:13 AM

(these photos were taken in March of 2009)

During whale season we like to camp here. It is on the lagoon where you can observe the grey whales. The bldg. in the background is where you can hire whale tour pangas to observe the whales. The palapas are available for dry camping. In 2009 the fee was $5 day. You will wake up to the sound of whales. Bird watching is spectacular as well.

The whale center bldg. has a decent restaurant with very good fish and shrimp tacos and simple meals as well. Beer is served!

The turnoff to the lagoon is 5 miles south of the turnoff to Guerrero Negro on Mex 1, then 15 miles in on a normally well graded road. We have driven in with a 10' camper and I have seen motorhomes/5th wheels in there as well.
