Last few times I drove through Tecate I had trouble finding a place that sells cans of Pacifico or Sol...mostly, well as expected, Tecate which I
don't tolerate. Any suggestions on a place that always has the two in stock? Thanks.bajadogs - 4-25-2013 at 02:15 PM
There is a Super Ley on the right side just south of town (heading south) that I would be very surprised if they didn't have what you need. Pass the
tracks and the ball field then look off to the right.DENNIS - 4-25-2013 at 02:15 PM
Can't answer that one, but years ago, I bought a sixpak of Tecate in a liquor store in Tecate and I asked the guy behind the counter why it cost more
there than in Ensenada?
He said, "It's fresher."
Gotta luv it.DavidE - 4-25-2013 at 03:40 PM
Like going to Hershey Pennsylvania and searching for a Nestle chocolate bar, or asking for Chateau Mouton Rothschild in St. Helena, California.cymeryss - 4-25-2013 at 09:46 PM
Will give Super Ley a try.....although was hoping there would be something going east...towards Mexicali.. Wonder if Calimax has got
something....THanks.bajadogs - 4-25-2013 at 11:58 PM
cymeryss,
Shake yourself man. It is 2 blocks out of your way.
Calimax has it. But it will be as much a hassle to park at Calimax and get in and out as going the 2 blocks south to Ley. Hit an OXXO just east of
Tecate and avoid the whole thing...
and dont drink and drive.Marc - 4-26-2013 at 07:01 AM
You gotta be one weird Dude to choose Pacifico rather than Tecate.DENNIS - 4-26-2013 at 07:18 AM

Really?? It's a no-brainer for me.
Tecate has changed the formula from thirty years back. That stuff was painful.DavidE - 4-26-2013 at 09:02 AM
Pain?
Pain?
You want pain, mon?
San Miguel from the Philippines!
The peoplesguidetomexico.com website has an article talking about Mexico City microbreweries.
ALL high production BEER all cerveza has changed in the last thirty years. It has become a wraith of its former being. More water, more fizz. How can
I be sure they do not "jolt" watered down high production beer with pure ethanol to maintain enough "buzz" to call the stuff beer? Even "Gallo" from
Guatemala is a shadow of what it once was. Cabra disappeared.
Talk about SOYLENT GREEN!David K - 4-26-2013 at 09:07 AM
Try Tecate Lite
I was very happy that the new Tecate after taste was not found in Tecate Lite. I enjoy Pacifico and Dos Equis Lager Especial... but Tecate Lite was a
good desert thirst quencher. Also, in Tecate is now brewed Mexicali Beer so if you can find that, try it!

That's a reborn beer too. It was one of the few available fifty or so years ago.David K - 4-26-2013 at 10:18 AM

LOL, I was going to add the word cerveza or beer to the XXX and hope there is no beer porn online.Correcamino - 4-28-2013 at 12:31 PM
Avoided the porn danger by typing "cerveza tres equis". Found that you can actually still buy it -- the empty cans, anyway:

"A fine beer can that would be a great addition to your collection!"
Sounds like they're describing wine.
Not only that....these cans arn't from times long gone. They had to be a more recent retro effort, judgeing from the pull tabs.
Also....I'm pretty much sure that Dos Equis [XX] was the dark beer way back then.Correcamino - 4-28-2013 at 03:08 PM
Dennis, you're making me feel ancient! If you look closely at the photos you'll notice they have seams and one shows rust; they are
made of steel! Am I the only one old enough to remember those days? Also, the pop tops are the removable tab type that has been banned in
the US (for ecological and safety reasons) since the late 1970's. We used to love to go down to Baja, where they were still sold, buy lots of Tecate
(or Carta Blance or Superior or Modelo), surf, drink and make chains out of the tabs like in the "old days".DENNIS - 4-28-2013 at 03:14 PM

Are you kidding? I remember Church Keys.
Steel cans....oh yeah. Couldn't crush those on your head at a party. Big headache. willardguy - 4-28-2013 at 03:22 PM
carta blanca had the bottle with the indentation on the bottom used to open another bottle. pretty clever marketing, you had to buy two!DENNIS - 4-28-2013 at 03:26 PM

Still does.willardguy - 4-28-2013 at 03:44 PM
R U sure about that??? I still find quite a few of the old "bottle cans" laying in the trash heaps with the opener bottom but now I think about it, I
havent looked at the bottom of a carta blanca bottle in awhile. I think its time!Correcamino - 4-28-2013 at 04:41 PM
willardguy, I wouldn't know - we only bought cans. The bottles in those days were all returnable, so really heavy! We
could cram more in a cooler and carry more to the beach, and packing them out to the arroyo de basura was easier. Boy, life was simple then. I
wonder how much my love of Baja involves trying to recapture that simplicity.DENNIS - 4-28-2013 at 04:45 PM

Tecate is owned by Heineken, and the taste is different from the 60's garbage, the bad tasting Tecate started the fad to put lime in your beer, 1 to
kill the germs on the top of the can and 2 to improve the taste, I drank Bohemia then and still do if I can get it, but on my recent motorcycle trip
to Copper Canyon, I drank a lot of TecatesDENNIS - 4-28-2013 at 08:26 PM

From Michael Jackson, The Beer Hunter:
The producers of Corona's similar rival Sol, the brewing company Moctezuma, of Guadalajara, Mexico, did once extend an invitation. The attraction for
me was to see the brewing of their slightly more characterful beer Dos Equis, in its amber form. I was interested because its color and hint of
maltiness makes it a vestigial reminder of a Vienna-style lager. At the time, they also had a fuller-colored version under the label Tres
Equis, which was more obviously malty. That product no longer exists, but they still have the darker, stronger, Nochebuena, a Christmas brew
that was without question my favorite Mexican beer until recently. Nochebuena is broadly similar in style to a Munich Bock beer.
