Help!!!! my printer died!

shari - 9-7-2013 at 07:30 AM

Yesterday was not my day....trying to scan and print a document for a local, my printer died....I tried all day to trouble shoot and it just wont work again...soooo....

I'm looking for suggestions for another one....simple and cheap is best with refillable ink qualities.

if anyone has an old one lying around that can print colour I would be willing to buy it or trade for accomodation, fishing, etc.

I had an excellent Canon printer and they just dont seem to last more than a couple years!

thanks all

EnsenadaDr - 9-7-2013 at 07:32 AM

NO office depot or office max in that end of the woods?

David K - 9-7-2013 at 07:42 AM

My HP PSC 1050xi has lasted for years... I am not happy that the ink doesn't last longer, but it still works!

larryC - 9-7-2013 at 07:44 AM

Shari
Probably not the same problem but my Canon printer died like yours and it turned out to be that the ink well at the bottom of the printer was full with waste ink. I had to take the whole thing apart and clean out the well and wash and dry out the foam pad and then carefully put it all back together. Mine is a IP6000. Not a simple job but doable for someone with patience, some jewelers screwdrivers and a pair of magnifying glasses. Good luck wirth yours.

I agree with HP. What I found with the other brands is that ink is more expensive and hard to find in Mexico. HP is dependable, relatively inexpensive and ink available even at the small supply stores throughout Baja.

shari - 9-7-2013 at 08:17 AM

thanks Larry...good plan...what I dont like about the MP160 is that every time you turn it on even to scan something, the ink thing does a cleaning and wastes ink...the alarm light went on and I cant even turn it on now....I did like my old HP.

our village is small and doesnt carry printer inks....no office depot or anything remotely close to it.

Osprey - 9-7-2013 at 08:48 AM

Got a new HP3525 at Soriana's for under 1K pesos and it seems to work pretty good. ON my old HP I had the ink cartridges filled here locally and they all leaked out on the way home. The 3525 doesn't run the test.

monoloco - 9-7-2013 at 08:53 AM

The problem that I have with ink jet printers is that we don't use them often enough and the (expensive) ink cartridges dry up, then when we need it it doesn't work. I've heard that the laser printers don't have that problem. For as often as I need to print something, now I just put the document on a memory stick and go down to the papelaria.

I have an HP Deskjest F2210, and has and still is serving me well. I ordered it from Walmart in 2009, and it cost around $40. I order my ink from eBay.

greengoes - 9-7-2013 at 10:09 AM

"It died" is sorely lacking details. What happened when you turned it on? Did it start to power up? Does it have power (little green or blue led lights on?) Does it have power but the PC just doesn't see it? Does the PC see it and send documents to it that don't print?

Does it get power from the outlet? Was Izak messing with it? See any brujas close to it?

shari - 9-7-2013 at 10:14 AM

when I tried to print something, the alarm button came on and it shut off....i was able to restart it 3 times but the alarm light kept coming on even when just trying to scan something. and then it just plain wont turn on at all now..when I unplug it and plug it in the alarm light is still on and no way to reset it..I spent alot of time troubleshooting, moving the sliding ink bar manually, re installing driver etc etc and no go...I'm gonna try Larry's suggestion and take the bugger apart I guess....printed just fine a coule day ago and nobody has been near it since....wonder if the heat renders it inactive...like it does to me! or yes perhaps witchcraft.....

DENNIS - 9-7-2013 at 10:18 AM

Here's a state-of-the-art printer fixer tool. Life's too short to settle for anything less:

DEP

Circuit board fallo.

Find the closest walmart, costco and bite the bullet of paying 25 bucks more than in the US. The Cats suggest an HP and the ink cartridges are everywhere.

Brinloor - 9-7-2013 at 11:31 AM

Shari you can shop online at Office Max Mexico and they ship everything directly to you at no charge. Their competitor Office Depot Mexico does what you would expect and sends your order, at your expense, via courier. I have used this many times to Mulegé, so it is definitely an option if you can't get to the big city.

shari - 9-7-2013 at 12:23 PM

wow Brinloor, I will definately check that out... thanks for the tip!

OK o I had the printer on the table...screw drivers in hand and in the glass...then I had to go for some shrimp tacos cause it's Saturday....now I have to go in the ocean cause it was way too hot in town....but now that I saw greengoes diagnosis, I may just throw it over the cliff.

should I dare open the link to fixing printers....I think not today...but will bookmark it for later perusal ...in case my trusty Canon doesnt go cliff diving.

thank you so much all for your learned advice and suggestions...and a special beso to Dennis for being so loveable.

And a big smooch for you, Toots.

Let me tell you how much fun destruction can be. When I built my place, I put in two of those low profile escusados....you know....the ones that look like sleek hairdryers sitting on the floor... and grew to hate them with a passion. One day, I popped the bolts on the one in my bathroom and took it up to our trash trailer, set it on the ground and beat it beyond recognition with a sledge hammer.
It was one of my most proud and gratifying moments.

I'm saving the second taza for a day when I need an emotional lift.
SALUD

Bajaboy - 9-7-2013 at 03:02 PM

Jose Luis at the Internet cafe ordered a hard drive for me and had it in a few days. Maybe talk to him:?:

acadist - 9-7-2013 at 03:54 PM

Unfortunately printers are more or less 'disposable' items these days. Almost cheaper to buy a new one than to buy ink. Sorry, I know that doesn't help on your corner of the world.........wannna trade?;)

DavidE - 9-7-2013 at 04:14 PM

Bahia Asuncion would rival Yemen in the amount of sand and dust that flies through the air. Cars get their valves constantly "ground" so valve jobs are a rarity. Anything that moves and isn't hermetically sealed is in for a beating. A $50,000 color laser printer wouldn't stand a chance. My budget for a printer would be something like nineteen dollars.

shari - 9-7-2013 at 04:36 PM

yes Acadist & Dave, that's the truth so no use buying a good one.and Jose Luis's repair are often costly so we have another solution....a kind Nomad is sending an old one down for me next week although I am still going to take this one apart anyway just to see how they work and heck I have nothing to lose....and Yes, we are always up for trades so bring one down so I'll have a spare when this one goes on the blink!

now about that CD player.....the one Udo kindly gave us seems to have a problem revving up it's engine...dang.

on another note.....skies are ominously dark now threatening rain....wonder how rainproof my tent is?

thanks again all of you for your thoughtful comments

That's the price one pays to live in the Vizcaino biosphere. If you love the place, you deal with it.

bajaguy - 9-7-2013 at 05:26 PM

when we are not actively using our printer, we cover it with a plastic trash bag. Not pretty, but it keeps the dust out.

My point about Jose Luis is that you can easily buy one and have it shipped to BA. For the record, his prices are far below what one pays in the USA and he guarantees his work. But it sounds like you got a deal.

Search Youtube for a video about fixing printers. If you have a common one I bet you'll find a video about your exact one. For the first search, just enter your make and model number into the search box.

BajaBlanca - 9-8-2013 at 02:13 AM

I have found the above advice to be so true...type in the exact words describing your problem, along with make and other details and someone else will have had the same problem! And kindly offer solutions.

We do pay a price for living in the desert ...

Hook - 9-8-2013 at 07:00 AM

Be aware that some inkjet manufacturers have models that are made for sale either in the US or outside the US, and even for specific countries. This can make for a VERY difficult time in finding replacement inkjet cartridges. I have heard people decry this while owning Epson, Canon and HP.

Our Mexican-bought Epson does not have replacement cartridges for sale in the US. Only Mexico, according to Epson support. Naturally, they are more expensive down here.

So, make sure that IF you end up buying new, you check the inkjet sources around you and make sure the cartridges are sold near you.

And if someone brings you down a US model, getting replacement cartridges might be difficult.

thanks for the tip....I have been searching for tutorials on fixing my problem....nada...(in english or spanish anyway) and trying to find the service manual to download but links go to something else...very frustrating!

I will take it tomorrow to Jose Luis for an estimate IF he can fix it...if I dont find any tutorials myself.

Bobvaso - 9-8-2013 at 07:48 AM

Shari, I was at Office Depot in Ensenada yesterday. They concentrate on Hewlett Packard. They have scan print photo fax. Good prices. My old girlfriend has had one for a long time. She scrapbooks, sends and scans hundreds of pix, does flyers, etc. Its a heavy workhorse. Check them out. I believe they are robust for Nevadaqs dusty environment too. I am in Punta Banda now. Best regards to you and Juan. Bobvaso

Shari we couls have a duel funeral mine faded away too.

shari - 9-8-2013 at 09:17 AM

gracias Bob and BajaDove....we shall mourn together today!

vgabndo - 9-8-2013 at 11:34 AM

I would add to steer clear of Photo Printers like the HP Photosmart types. They use a LOT of ink, and my B209a, requires four cartridges, and it is EASILY possible to buy the wrong 564 black cartridge. A nightmare from the beginning, and only at first did it produce STUNNING color prints. A love hate relationship.:lol:

toneart - 9-8-2013 at 03:40 PM

Shari,

Just print yerself a new one in 3D:

The CubeX 3D Printer is designed to bring your creations to life with professional grade printability for the office, school or home.

The CubeX printer revolutionizes the way we think of printing. Instead of putting ink on a flat surface like regualr printing, it builds up material in three dimensions to create a real object. It melts plastic filament, then draws with it in a very fine layer. It then builds another fine layer of plastic on top of this one, then another, and another building your idea in slices from the bottom up until you have a plastic object ready to hold!

3D Print in Multi-Color

Easily create your multi color parts with CubeX color software

Print as Big As A Basketball

10.8" x 10.45" x 9.5" or 275mm x 265mm x 240mm

Design Software Included.

Hey, don't laugh. The gun nuts are all over this. :o
