Favorite Knot?

Cypress - 11-2-2013 at 12:39 PM

I've got a couple in mind. Just wondering what the nomad fishermen think.

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 11-2-2013 at 12:52 PM

Hola Cypress,

knot in trouble.

Pescador - 11-2-2013 at 04:06 PM

Depends on what you want it to do. If you are tying directly to the hook and want 100% of line strength, the only knot to consistently do that is the Double San Diego Jamb Knot, but it has been shown to be a very poor knot in line test less than 20 lb. Then the testing machines show a marked improvement in the clinch knot which does not cut into itself as badly as the jamb knot.

Bimini knots were tested and found to be strongest with only 12 twists and Allbrights were found to be most effective at 7 twists.

We used to spend a lot of time on windy days in fish camp having contests to see whose knot held the best. I won a lot of beer on that one.

Palomar! simple and STRONG

bajaguy - 11-2-2013 at 04:17 PM

Afraid Knot

Udo - 11-2-2013 at 04:20 PM

Are you talking about sailing or fishing knots?

My all-time favorite knot is the bolen. Strong holding power and ease of dis-assembly.

Me too. The bolen is used for so many things, and always is so simple but effective, and so easy to untie.

When there is a hot bite and you are in a hurry, it is hard to beat the speed and simplicity of the Palomar knot.

Agreed

captkw - 11-2-2013 at 06:20 PM

But,,A Double palomar is alot BETTER,,Till around 50lb line

watizname - 11-2-2013 at 08:57 PM

Go to knot.--- Improved Clinch. Dad taught me 60 years ago. I can tie it in the dark, drunk, sober, blindfolded, with my eyes shut, open, looking the other way whatever. Anytime it has failed me, I knew before I dropped it that it wasn't right.
Joining lines, --Albright
heavy mono -- crimped double sleeves.

dorado50 - 11-2-2013 at 09:26 PM

Never heard of a bolen knot?, but a bowline knot is very useful in so many ways (knot for fishing however:no:) and easy to untie!

Skipjack Joe - 11-2-2013 at 10:41 PM

I use the uni knot for most everything. Not because it's a great knot but because I can tie it in my sleep. Dad taught it to me at the kitchen table when I was 11.

The Bolen knot is real nice because of it's small profile. It goes through the guides very smoothly. Don't like 'bulky' knots.

Wow. Just wrote essentially the same comment as waitzename.

Palomar and Bimini Twist. I kid you knot.:D

chippy - 11-3-2013 at 06:15 AM

Uni and Palomar.

mulegemichael - 11-3-2013 at 07:51 AM

i like a uni to uni for braid to flouro....and a rapala knot for tying to lures and flies.

watizname - 11-3-2013 at 08:06 AM

Right on Skippy Joe. I think I learned at a kitchen table too, only in a trailer while camping at the meadows just below Parchers Camp on the So. Fork of Bishop Creek. Dad hauled a trailer up there and we stayed two weeks. Had to stop numerous times and let the car cool off in one of the turnouts as it was a one lane road then with cliffs on either side. Mom was terrified. Oh----the good times.

Osprey - 11-3-2013 at 08:14 AM

When I have live bait, dead bait, chunk bait and stout mono for bigger fish, I know I can rely on the Seaguar --- strong, quick, deadly when you need fluoro leaders in a hurry.

watizname - 11-3-2013 at 10:30 AM

Didn't know the Seaguar. Looked it up. Pretty cool. Now to practice. Thanks Jorge.

cabonotcho - 11-3-2013 at 10:34 AM

clove hitch

capitolkat - 11-3-2013 at 03:57 PM

Albright for splicing two lines

Improved Clinch- learned it as a boy scout on fishing trips many years ago. Never failed me under all types of circumstances

Palomar if I'm feeling like some variety from the clinch.

aguachico - 11-10-2013 at 10:10 AM

Hooks = palomar.
Terminal tackle, iron, trolling lures = double uni knot

Both of these knots have two lines in the eye. They are bullet proof unless you don't notice the two line crossed over each other. If they are crossed then they are self cutting. as I get older it takes a bit more time to see if the know is tied right.

Floro leader to mono = surgeons knot. This knot has proven itself to be great up to 60# leaders. 7 wraps 20#, 6 for 30#, 5 for 40-60#.

chuckie - 11-10-2013 at 10:14 AM
