Some are ruining it for us all.

TMW - 11-10-2013 at 12:44 PM

This was posted on Rogers facebook this morning. This is not good for the off-road racing people.

Roger Norman:

Help, anyone know who was pre-running around race mile 715 in a vehicle last night? They ran through a farmers tomato field tearing up his crop and also broke a water main. Anybody who races through a farmers field during the race will be a DQ. The only place you can short course from VCP to VCP is from the bottom of the Summit RM 115 to RM 215 near San Felipe. Whoever this person was they screwed all of us. The course was shut down to all pre-running in that area this morning because of this inconsiderate person.

Ateo - 11-10-2013 at 12:49 PM

Someone, if caught, will be in hot water. They should be forced to pay for the damage.

tripledigitken - 11-10-2013 at 12:51 PM

Acts like this help to explain why we see boobie traps every year.:?:

And don't you think who ever did it and his team should be out of the race?

At least no one was injured or killed, but as TW says, these things will ruin it for the others.

vgabndo - 11-10-2013 at 12:58 PM

Now seems the perfect time for the racing community to stand up and show who is in the majority. The racers need to find this team, and make sure that the penalties are so appropriate that the rest of us think you guys are policing yourselves. It doesn't just hurt racers when a (likely) rich foreigner tears-up our hosts livelihood. (Yes, I know that some Mexicans make money on the race.)

DENNIS - 11-10-2013 at 01:02 PM

Whoever it was had to be drunk to pull a stunt like this and in serious need of an unforgettable education on the matter.

Some Mexicans have teams and drive as well, I'm told. We shouldn't be too hasty in pointing the finger of guilt.

Alan - 11-10-2013 at 01:09 PM

Definitely the responsible SOB needs to be held accountable but as the sponsoring entity SCORE needs to step up to the plate to settle damages while the search continues for the person actually responsible.

That would be the right thing to do and maybe it would motivate them to find the jerk.

Hence the word 'likely' pardner. They are in the minority, and I give them the common sense to not race in their neighbor's tomato patch. I'd actually like to be proven wrong, 'cause at least then we'd know WHO to blame and make the target of our indignation.

Are you surrrrrrre, Wiley? Your name was mentioned by someone who knew you a hundred years ago?

wessongroup - 11-10-2013 at 02:13 PM

Now that is possible ... we used to "play" in the tomato fields around the house back in the "days" ... in south Downey around 1950

Would lay between the rows and watch the plane "dusting" fly over us ... DDT was better than sliced bread in the 40's ... anyone remember the hand pumps used to spray around the house ... I do

Yeah, all my siblings are still alive ...still not sure on long term impacts, at this time :biggrin:

The wife told me I didn't go any place, just checked with her ...

Agree with TW and others ... not something which one should do for a number of reasons ... unless they were YOUR tomatoes

Maybe it was a tire test ... pretty slippery driving in a tomato field IMHO

Race Members should go out and take a look at this tomato patch and see what damage was done. Then if it is a small patch as most of these farmers have maybe a couple of hundred or so dollars would cover the cost. See if the other racers in the Off Road group would throw a little into the cash pot to cover this farmer's loss.
Racers would probably be willing to do this to keep bad feelings from developing. Thus, it would help stop community bad will towards their Off Road activities or making them seem to be irresponsible people.

Just a thought to make this racing group be know as caring people that they are. However, the racers would need to know the claim amount is valid. If race officials tell members claim is valid then it would probably make it easier to get the money up. Again, do not know how big the tomato patch was, however some of the ones I have seen are pretty small. So, the cost to cover the loss should be something this group would be able to handle in a quick manner hopefully. Take Care & Travel Safe------"No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN" bajafun777

willardguy - 11-10-2013 at 04:45 PM

like roger doesn't already have a full plate, now he's got knuckleheads growing tomatoes in the middle of his race course!

larryC - 11-11-2013 at 08:04 AM

It may not be a "race team" that is responsible for the damage. Around here we get the wannabees that seem to have no respect for the locals and think that this whole place is here to be their play ground. Sometimes they are driving a rented prerunner and just having irresponsible fun. He is probably bragging to his friends today about how he just barely made it through a tomato patch with a farmer hot on his tail.

Must have missed the sign

durrelllrobert - 11-11-2013 at 10:24 AM

From Roger Norman's Facebook page

His mother, Fran Muncey owns the Galley restaurant at the Chula Vista Marina and his stepfather was the world champion unlimited hydroplane racer Bill Muncey. Besides owning SCORE Roger also owns the Crystal Bay Casino and tons of other stuff so paying for a tomato patch should be no problema.

Are any IDs required on pre-runner vehicles?

Whale-ista - 11-11-2013 at 10:28 AM

Agree this is bad for many reasons, including "public relations." Even if repairs are made, No organization wants to be doing damage control before a big event because of the bad acts of a few anonymous people.

Is there a way to ID race participants before as well as during actual race?

SCORE seems well organized. Are there requirements for race team vehicles to display identification on support vehicles (pre-runners, pit crews, etc).

If so, that might enforce better behavior and accountability.

BajaBlanca - 11-11-2013 at 10:44 AM

Just terrible.

I'm not out to shame anybody. Just shedding light on why Viva La Baja is at the bottom of that sign you commented on.

Back to the topic.....

once they figure out who drove through the guy's crop, rather than throwing a few hundred $$$ at the farmer, make the driver replant the field AND pay for any outstanding costs for that process.

Money doesn't fix everything :light:

La Baja (The Baja)... Years ago, I asked 'BajaCactus' if this term was offensive or improper to the ears of a native Baja Californian... his answer was absolutely NOT. In fact, he uses the term in his promotions of Baja Cactus.

While 'baja' means 'lower', it alone as 'Baja' has a great recognition around the world for the rugged and beautiful peninsula. 'La Baja' lives fine without being attached to California! ;D
