dug - 11-30-2004 at 04:49 AM

I'm temporarily working in Peru and I use Skype to talk with my wife in California and colleagues in Russia.

The only problem is when one person is on a dial-up internet connection, there is a lag between each side speaking. It is like using a radio under these conditions.

Don't post personal info in your profile. My wife identified herself as female and received hundreds of calls until she made herself invisible to non-selected friends.

vonnage

dono - 11-30-2004 at 06:46 AM

we have been using vonnage down here in los barriles for over a year and love it, $38 a month, unlimited calls and no voice delay. our old ph. bills avg. $500 to a $1,000 per month, quite a savings.

I am interested to know more about how VoIP works with your sat connection. In my experience I have found both Starband and Diertway to be too poor of quality for VoIP calls. Can you tell me more about what sat service you use?

Blackie, (appropriate name), your signature block is equally offensive no matter which forum you post it on. But is effective in discouraging anyone who's accused you of any intelligencee.

Bruce R Leech - 11-30-2004 at 11:46 AM

I have not experienced any delay on this system at all . I some times get an echo when I talk to some one with out headset.

When I call a telephone the only comment I get is how clear the connection is .
I use a 56 bad dial up modem.

Very cool! Thanks for the phone call. I was impressed with the sound quality.

I have also found active discussion on VoIP via satelite Internet at http://www.datastormusers.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi/index.h...

Take it to "Off Topic". See you there..

Thanks Bruce

bajalou - 12-3-2004 at 05:16 PM

Thank you Bruce for letting us know about this - it's great. I and about 10 of my neighbors/friends have gotten it now with no problems.
It say's you have to connect at 33kbs or faster and they're telling the truth. I was in a motel in El Centro and connected at 28 and the words were kind of chopped up. I also called my home phone here in San Felipe (8 cents a min) and it wasn't satisfactory at all. Today I talked to a friend who has DirecWay with a wireless router and his words were chopped up also. I suspect his computer was too far from the router and he was getting a weak signal. He heard me great he said. The wife talked to her mother on the phone with no problems. We're online with Telnor Porgidy Aire and a Linksys wireless router with laptops with built in WiFi.

It was also recomended by a columnist in the Silicon Valley . com who also said get it direct, not from some other site.

" If you're considering downloading Skype, and I would encourage you to -- it's a fantastic piece of software, do yourself a favor and download the standalone version. ZDNet's Russell Shaw recently installed the Kazaa-Skype package and found that it arrived on his machine accompanied by some 2,509 pieces of spyware. "

Thanks

bajalou - 12-8-2004 at 08:38 PM

Just saw a add for Vonage for broadband calls unlimited in US and Canada for only 24.99 a month. Wow. And Skype is free computer to computer and then only 2 cents a min for calling US or Can telephones. Been using it daily since Bruce told us about it and very satisfied.

Thanks again Bruce

bajalou - 12-9-2004 at 08:44 AM

I too have been calling land lines in the US with no problems. The wife has already almost used up the $10EU on her computer. You have to have enough speed tho. From motel with a 28kbps connect, the calls were broken up. From a 53kbs connect at another motel they were great. If you are up/downloading big files at the same time, that will interfear with the phone quality to some degree depending on your bandwidth.

WOW, That is actually cheaper than the published .08 a minute to call Mexico. Of course you are calling Mexico from inside Mexico, that must log as a regular call...

I too praise Bruce L for posting this subject and I love my Skype. It should be good, I understand it is the same guys that created Napster.

bajalou - 12-10-2004 at 08:34 PM

Mexico City and Monterey are listed as 2 cents a min points in Mexico. The balance of Mex is more. Any other point in Mexico to another in Mexico is the higher cost. So tell all your friiends to move to Mex. City.

Bruce R Leech - 12-10-2004 at 09:05 PM

the only thang that really makes Skype better is to use a good Headset. I highly recommend the Plantronics dsp 500. it stereo and has a good noise canceling microphone. My dial up connection runs at about 53 baud all the time and gives me good service. but I have a Friend in La Paz that only gets 36 to 40 and it is unusable.

The Calling Experience

Bruce R Leech - 12-13-2004 at 07:42 AM

The Calling Experience

Most VoIP Clients for the PC require you to wear a headset and use your mouse to make and answer Internet calls. And if you use your PC speakers and a microphone then you give up your calling privacy. The PhoneConnector offers you a simple alternative that automatically controls your instant messenger for voice chat or your VoIP client that you are already using today.

Adding Intelligence...

The PhoneConnector does much more than simply add a new sound device like some other products you may have seen. Our software automatically detects the VoIP software you are using, 'rings' your phone on an incoming call, and automatically answers the call when you pick up your phone. You don't have to touch your PC to make and receive Internet calls from any of the supported clients.

Adding Mobility...

By connecting a cordless phone to the PhoneConnector you can answer and place Internet calls while away from your PC. Simply pick up your cordless phone, listen for dial tone, and dial your preselected number for your 'contact'. PhoneConnector also supports dialing from your Outlook Address Book with some clients.

VoIP made simple...

Learning a new application can sometimes be intimidating and VoIP software is certainly no exception. Even among the
best applications it is just easier to pick up your phone and start talking rather than fumbling for a headset and trying to click your mouse. The PhoneConnector simplifies even the toughest of VoIP applications.

The PhoneConnector

Is a USB device with an RJ11 connection that enables you to connect any regular telephone to your PC. Our
software automatically connects to many instant messengers and VoIP clients making the connected
phone RING on incoming Internet calls and enabling you to DIAL to make Internet calls using only your phone!

If you are using any one of these Window's clients below, you really want a PhoneConnector!

USB Phone Verses PhoneConnector. Which is better?

This device plugs into any USB port of your PC, and allows you to connect any standard Telephone to the RJ-11 connector at the other end of the small adapter.

Currently, I have a modern cordless (wireless) phone (Telstra F2100 1+1) working on it. This has an additional handset, so I can run two phones from it. You can't plug any more than one standard phone into the RJ-11 connector, but you can daisy chain wireless connections.

PhoneConnector has its own driver, which can be downloaded after purchase.
You must install the software before you connect the hardware.

You will be able to hear busy, ring, and dial tone, on your phone, and be able to dial numbers directly from the phone. PhoneConnector has a small windows box that attaches itself to your Skype application. See Below:
