What are your favorite hikes in Baja??

BajaLucy - 1-11-2014 at 08:50 AM

What are your favorite hikes on the Baja peninsular?

MMc - 1-11-2014 at 09:08 AM

We love the washes around Catavina. We will drive up one until we comfortable or worried about getting stuck and start walking. We have spent more then a couple of winter days wandering around. Like Joshua Tree only bigger.

bajalearner - 1-11-2014 at 09:27 AM

So far, my favorite hike has been from the parking lot to the club. But I will be watching this thread to file some other hikes that I will choose each time I go south. I hope to see many added here. Thanks Baja Lucy.

BajaLucy - 1-11-2014 at 10:09 AM

Funny @ baja learner  Thank you @MMc yep I seen place in Catavina looking like Joshua.. It's amazing... I think Baja or the Government of turismo should spend some time adding some trails. It would be Awesome as many people from all over the work love to explore. Hiking-Enjoying everything about Nature I'm one of them :bounce: It would be nice if Explores go and have some marking signs that way we won't get lost :) Same time anyone can explore around but just knowing where to Explore would help the whole Excursion

My friend, I see where we differ. I don't want the governemnt to get involved in a nature area, public or private unless absolutly nesessary. That is one of the things I like most about Baja. We can make our own adventures.

Thanks for the information, I really appreciate it and will file it for a future adventure. :)

bkbend - 1-11-2014 at 10:20 AM

Mike's mountain for the view. In reality, you can hike darn near anywhere and find things interesting to look at... plant, animal, or mineral.

David K - 1-11-2014 at 10:23 AM

Anyplace I can get on El Camino Real... it is like stepping back in time!

Here are some Camino Real photos:

Ateo - 1-11-2014 at 10:33 AM

Hey BajaLucy......good idea for a thread! I haven't done a search here on Nomad for hikes. MMc's Catavina idea is a good one. All the washes head somewhere - a perfect nature made trail.

I don't have any to recommend that I can think of. Let's try that Catavina idea next trip south.

Nice avatar BTW......naca. :lol::lol:

Holy Mole Bajadoc! Great photos. Great idea for a hike too!!!!

Baja Bucko - 1-11-2014 at 11:49 AM

A great hike would be from San Javier to the Comondus...the last long stretch on el camino real so worn on the rocky mountain down down into the Comondu valley is incredible.

Also from R. Compostela over the mesa then down into Mission San Borja.

And last but not least that loooong route from the coast south of Agua Verde....the hike from Rancho Los Dolores northward. That route is a lifetime route......R. Los Dolores is accessible by feet or panga but once there what a hike.

bajaguy - 1-11-2014 at 11:54 AM

My favorite is to hike from my patio chair to the fridge, get a cold Pacifico, then hike back to patio chair.

MMc - 1-11-2014 at 05:37 PM

The hikes out of Punta San Jose noth or south are very cool. We hiked from PSJ to Punta China alnog the cliffs one day, it was very cool. We were scouting it for a drive. The walk is a lot of fun, decided not to try the drive.

It is very hard to spell adventure with a "A" any more. If you are not comfortable with hiking around Cativina with out "guides" maybe you should not be going? If you are kinda unsure, use the idea of bread crumbs. Make sure you pick up or knock down what ever you use, nothing permanent. That area already has to much paint and crap.

Rancho Compostela on maps

Compostela to San Borja, and the rest of the Sierra Camino Real from Santa Gertrudis to San Borja...

I have long loved the hike up Guadalupe Canyon from the Hot Springs campgrounds up to "the pools" and back. Did it many times back in the '60's.

Hmmmm, the best must remain secret. A fav known hike is botela azul in spm.

Baja Bucko - 1-11-2014 at 08:25 PM

That whole plateau is incredible.

I last was on Blue Bottle in 1973 with the late great Baja icon, Bud Bernhard. Speaking of hikes, we had just finished up a 10 day or so plateau backpack to the mission and surrounding area. A 75 yr old woman was on that trip, Louise Werner, who w her husband, had Desert Magazine. Such memories......:)

acadist - 1-11-2014 at 10:29 PM

From my tent to the banos

David K - 1-11-2014 at 10:43 PM

Enjoying the new book by Froylan Tiscareño, 'Baja California Adventures'. He was on many hikes to San Pedro Martir mission with Bud... and it's all in there! Great stuff, Baja trip diaries from 1962 to 2008.

Always love your maps David K!!

David K - 1-11-2014 at 11:03 PM

Thanks Bob... it is how I can mentally be back in Baja, when I am stuck in the USA... well maps and Baja Nomad, that is! I know you and many of my other friends like seeing maps of the places discussed, specially if they are not of the well known tourist places.

I am happy to try and fill any map requests, as well... just ask! I want to share what I have been collecting for nearly 50 years with anyone who would enjoy seeing them.

redhilltown - 1-12-2014 at 12:03 AM

Gotta say I love the hike south out of Mission Santa Maria over the hill and down the water canyon towards Gonzaga...I know DK has posted some pics and maps of this (well, duh!). Petroglyphs, water, ruins, history, unbelievable views and scenery. :tumble:

David K - 1-12-2014 at 12:10 AM

I have seen some beautiful photos from down in the canyon... some You Tube videos as well... I have looked down into the canyon, from the mission valley end and I have hiked about 2 miles in from the Gonzaga Bay side... but not to the big pool seen in photos (and on the wall at Alfonsina's).

So much Baja... so little time!

From You Tube:

The hikes up into the canyons of Sierra Gigantea from the Pt Escondido area are pretty nice, but arduous.

DocRey - 1-12-2014 at 09:14 AM

Good call, DK. Just finishing up Froylan's book. Talk about a serious hiker, man-o-man!:bounce:

BajaLucy - 1-12-2014 at 12:57 PM

Those mesas in that area are some of Baja's finest. How'd ya get up there?

I have agree, those are some great hikes, Bucko

sequoyah - 1-13-2014 at 09:55 AM

I stayed at Casa Leree and the owner, Juanita, had maps of two hikes onto the mesas.

She has put white paint on rocks to mark the trails.

It is a challenging climb up, particularly the one that is behind her house, but really amazing when you get up there.

She has a bookstore and I am sure would be glad to give anyone a map who might inquire.

Baja is a gift to all who are 'brave' enough to travel there!

Maps are looks into a place or into a place, back in time!

Awesome.

Mexitron - 1-13-2014 at 09:54 PM

Probable my favorite area to hike in is the Southern San Pedro Martir area---amazing beauty but being a plant nut, botanically it is the convergent zone of Yellow Pine Forest, Gulf Desert, Central Desert, Chaparral, and Coastal Scrub/Coastal Sarcophylous Desert. You get all manner of curious juxtapositions of plants from seemingly disparate regimes---like Cardons and Coast Live Oaks in the same canyon. And there's Blue Palms, everywhere.

David K - 1-13-2014 at 11:57 PM

BajaLucy, have you seen Mexitron's Baja backpacking/ hiking photos? >>> http://vivabaja.com/mexitron

Here's my favorite hike so far in Baja:

San Pedro Martir. From below the observatory up to the Mirador El Altar y Picacho.
