Bay of LA Electricity

Timinator - 6-29-2014 at 06:49 AM

I haven't been to the BoLA in several years, but it was one of my favorite spots in Baja. I'm in a position now to purchase property in Baja and am very much leaning towards an area with electricity vs. something like Punta Chivato. I really like the PC area but being on the grid is my first choice. So, is there property or houses available in the BoLA that are ocean front with electricity? I understand the town now has electricity but I'm not sure how far out it's available, or if there are any projects out of town that they're extending the electricity to.

South of town to red hill. That would be the Diaz leased property. However, the very, very southern-most house does not. Probably a story there if anyone wants to tell it.......
South of red hill nada and believe me, I'm not holding my breath. I have no idea how far north the power goes - I assume at least to the military outpost?? Someone else may chime in who knows.

The power lines run 5 or so miles north of town to the military base, but the landowner has to come up with $$ to run lines the 1/4 mile from the road to the beach so not much makes it makes it there.

The power runs a few miles north of the military base now and just off the top of my head I can think of 2 places that are for sale. Just take a trip down there and look around. You might find your dream home, or not.

Last time I was there we stayed at the Hotel Costa del Sol which had a new addition, where we stayed. Unbeknownst to us the electric was only connected the old part because the owner didn't have the money ($5k USD according to him) for a transformer and wiring to make the connection to the new part. So the generator provided power to our room but was turned off at 9:00? Pm at night and turned on again until 8:00 AM in the morning = no coffee before going fishing.

Electricity

The town has had Full time Electricity for around 5 years now I am surprised that CFE is still running that Generator. :wow::wow:

Larry, the two places for sale, are they on the grid and worth the trip down there to see? Is there any way to get information on any of the houses? I just got back from a trip to Loreto and all places up the coast to Punta Chivato.

Thanks to all for your responses.

Tim
Here is one that is a good deal. I know the owner and he is a good guy.

The other place I was thinking about is at camp archelon and electricity is not hooked up to the house but is available in the area I think. Contact Antonio Resendiz, resendizshidalgo@yahoo.com and ask about the house that Terry Little is selling.
good luck

Larry thanks again. I've sent Fred and Antonio some emails. If anything else comes to mind please let me know.

Rent first and see if you like the local meth heads enough to buy

We seriously considered BOLA before finally settling here outside San Quintin. Off-grid didn't scare us as I was more than willing to build our own system which we ended up doing here.

Love everything about the area except the summers. I'm a big wuss when it comes to heat above 90 and we wanted a place to live year round. If you like the heat as many do, I think it is ideal...

Favorite Spot

If i were to live anywhere in Baja except where I now live it would all the way around the south bay past the perserve that is one of the most beautiful places in Baja Norte.

No, not a huge fan of Baja's 90+ degree summer heat. That's why I'm a bit particular about being on the grid. Off-grid doesn't scare me, I have a hunting cabin in Ohio that's completely off-grid, but one's enough.

I haven't spent much time down in the San Quintin area, maybe I'll get down there one these days. I keep hearing more and more about that area. The evening calm down in the BoLA along with the view of all the islands are some the best memories/feelings I have after spending a day in the water spearfishing them.

So meth-heads down there now too? We have problems with "cookers" down in the southern hills of Ohio. We gate and lock the roads and put trail cameras out that text/email pictures back to our phones within 45 seconds. That's helped put a kink in their game.

Wiles, the house "our friends" in the first link is what we're looking for. Some great photos. Thanks for the links.

Is Antonio sub-dividing his camp land? Because if he is not, then it wouldn't be really "buying a property".

Yes he is. The property is available as a fideocomiso.

So soon there will be no more campo Archelon?

He is selling the land that Terri's house is on, I'm not sure about any other.

larryC - 7-1-2014 at 09:00 AM

That is right, he is selling the land Terry's house is on. The house is not in the camp area. I don't know if any other land is for sale, you'd have to as Tony. The last time I talked to Tony he didn't mention anything about selling anything else

Is Terry's house north or south of town?

Ask Antonio, he is selling it for the owner. Couple things to keep in mind - whether it's Fideicomiso or lease (the other home is a lease), and how far from electric lines.

I agree with somebody's suggestion to rent first, and see how it works for you. The bay is beautiful, but a few days diving trip is one thing, owning a property is another. I recall that homes that I've been in, didn't have a city water - they had a roof-top tank. Which wouldn't be a deal breaker for me personally, electricity is more important.

I may take a trip down this month and take a look. How does one get in touch with Cangrejos Motel and...Pedro the guide/Pangero?
