Mt Shasta, 4th of July long weekend

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 09:51 PM

It was 110 in Redding but as we approached Weed there were beautiful clouds right above us.

Ateo - 7-16-2014 at 09:54 PM

ahhhhhhhhhhh

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 09:54 PM

Then we turned east and drove along the base of Shasta.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 09:56 PM

It's farm country up there in Modoc. The storm clouds hung low.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 09:58 PM

We camped at the shores of the Klamath ...

The bug hatches were abundant this year. We had mayflies all over the vehicle.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 10:03 PM

The mid-morning spinner fall. Spent spinner would float into the eddy and fish fed on the bugs in the foam.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 10:05 PM

The caddis came off during the evening hatch.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 10:08 PM

Parachute Adams danced on the surface gave a good imitation of the emerging caddis.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 10:10 PM

I did a lot of bird watching under these oaks in the mornings.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 10:13 PM

On the way back we stopped on the Upper Sac.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 10:15 PM

Reflections on evening light.

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 10:17 PM

Growth along the banks ...

Skipjack Joe - 7-16-2014 at 10:18 PM

And then it was twilight on the water.

thanks for taking us along on your fishing trip amigo...lovely greens and clouds. My mouth was watering for fresh trout!

Mexitron - 7-17-2014 at 07:28 AM

Beautiful! I was supposed to be in that area this week but car trouble nixed that trip...

DianaT - 7-17-2014 at 08:31 AM

BEAUTIFUL --- a really nice set. Reflections on evening light is my favorite. A beautiful place to me.

We were up in the Zumwalt Prairie in northeast Oregon over the 4th and we kept hoping for a storm with all the clouds.

Thank you for the comments.

It was a very restful holiday. I love it up there. Every morning I would wait until the sun rose high enough to reach the camper and then position my lawn chair under the great oak to where the rays felt warm. Then with binoculars in hand I would look upward. Didn't bring the book with me but they were all familiar. Now I'm in the office and it's fun to remember.

western tanager
bullock oriole
grosbeak
varied thrush
american robin
yellow warbler
audubon's warbler
red winged blackbird
creeper
white-beasted nuthatch
stellers jay
crow
merganzer
dipper
hairy woodpecker
acorn woodpecker
lewis woodpecker
flicker
red tailed hawk
california quail
mourning dove
loggerhead shrike
flycatcher (unknown species)

Oh .... and there were bats at twilight.

Great photos! Always fun to see a green, watery part of the world.

vgabndo - 7-17-2014 at 10:40 AM

I'm glad you enjoyed my "other" home place! We had a nice soft soaking BRIEF rain last night and the the green is also damp. The condition of the Sacrament River above Box Canyon Dam is too sad to contemplate.

Skipjack Joe - 7-17-2014 at 10:58 AM

vgabndo,

We were contemplating whether to visit Mossbrae Falls on the way back. I wanted to shoot the falls and Alex was more interested in fishing further down.

It sounds as though we made the right decision. There's probably not much water coming over the falls?

P.S. I remember having a fine meal at the Black Bear Diner about 2 years ago in your town. Searched for it this year and there was no sign of it. Did they close?

Spectacular Igor!!!!

Skipjack Joe - 7-17-2014 at 12:40 PM

Thanks Ken. It's so nice to see that you are still reading this board.

I think many of us are waiting for pictures from your latest Morro Bay dive.

vgabndo - 7-17-2014 at 02:50 PM

Yes, Igor, the Black Bear is still in the same location at the central MS off ramp. Plus about 30 more in the franchise now! Wastefully large portions, decent food. I haven't eaten there for years as a result of their corporate politics.

Here's a GE of Lake Siskiyou two years ago with standing water under the foot bridges.

The next picture was this week taken from the upper bridge looking back toward the lake which is now out of sight.

Not to worry, I suspect that you and Bruce Dean would get along fine. I objected to his endorsement of Wally Herger.

Wally for Governor

bajaguy - 7-17-2014 at 07:52 PM

I think Wally would make a great Governor of the State of Jefferson!!!

We stopped there last night. The Chinese chicken salad was great. I had little trouble finishing it. Try it some time.
