grichg - 9-13-2014 at 02:21 PM

Driving to Cabo Tuesday and my friend has an expired passport = no tourist card...

Has anyone drivin south lately and are they asking for them? I can honestly say I dont think I have ever been asked for one????

thanks

Typically they do not check, but this is Mexico and "typically" can change in a heartbeat. One never knows! There could be a heavy fine if found without one. It is always been my experience to be as legal as you can. This is not your country, be wise.

Happy trails

grichg - 9-13-2014 at 02:40 PM

SF, of course but this is a situation where we cant be legal although always am.

Expired passport will give you troubles coming back into the U.S.

grichg - 9-13-2014 at 03:01 PM

BB, actually thats false. A expired passport just means expired and doesnt invalidate citizenship. When traveling by LAND you can use an expired one. They wont even blink an eye when returning as I have personally done it.

Now back to "The Mexican Tourist Card" :)

thanks

Tourist Card-
Very easy, when crossing the border go into the SAT building all the way on the right as you are going to cross- You can go into the auto declaration area- Ask for the Visa desk, fill out the paper form and pay $25.00 - Voila Easy to do.

The Consulate in San Diego does not issue Tourist Visas - Visitante visa.

MP - Please reread my post

Mexico INM requires a valid passport to issue you an FMM (tourist card).
You do not need a passport to return to U.S., it is only requested.

Tough crowd here....:?:

Marc - 9-13-2014 at 05:35 PM

They only check if you don't have one.

bajabuddha - 9-13-2014 at 05:37 PM

....I can't know..... :?: :(

Reading at a 4th grade level around here.
I have not been asked for a tourist card in Guerro for years. I pass through there 6 more times a year and not a concern anymore. Just have your 10 peso tire spray money ready.....

Near Guerrero Negro, just inside the state border (Eagle Monument, 28º Parallel) had my tourist card checked in 2001, 2007, 2009, and in 2012 a new ALTO sign was at the INM check office, so we came to a stop in front of the INM office where the guy looked up and waved on without looking (first time).

Perhaps I am just lucky to always see an immigration officer there, or you guys drive at night, or take the detour around that part of Hwy. 1, like the locals do to avoid the bug spray thing?

Anyway, better to have it and not need it... then to need it and not have it. edm1 was fined $100 US because his wife did not have one... because her passport was expired when they tried to get it at the border... and the officer at Guerrero Negro got them for it... this was in July, 2011.

Thanks for the responses. Got info on a go around as well

now just got to stay away from Odle

Tioloco - 9-13-2014 at 09:42 PM

Don't worry about it. Go have fun and if they get u for a $100... Whatever! That means you have about an hour less of Cabo nightlife. Chances are good you will be fine.

there was an immigration officer at guerrero negro on Thursday but she didn't check for papers...

she had a uniform on

visas were $25usa at the border...really easy
they stamped the passports when they were stamping the visas

bajabuddha - 9-14-2014 at 05:51 AM

Errmm, don't want to rain on your parade, but you're heading down the Peninsula on TUESDAY? Are you not watching the news right now? I think you should take a looooooong look at what you're heading into; this is the Full Monty of storms, amigo. Gonna be some major breaches in Hwy 1 methinks. Your tourist card will be the least of your worries. Good luck.

I think a valid visa and passport invalidates bad roads.....I would also rethink that trip....

Yes, but the OP's friend has an expired passport. My experience is that they do check the expiration when you get your FMM.

Also, buena suerte driving, that hurricane looks like a monster.

weebray - 9-14-2014 at 10:26 AM

Don't worry, be happy. Enjoy your adventure/trip but watch the vados. Your chances of being asked for your tourist card are about 0.01% and while the US border agent may read you the riot act he's not going to turn you back.

gnukid - 9-14-2014 at 11:05 AM

You can get a passport expedited in a few hours at the us consulate with printed "official"itinerary. Be prepared.

thanks for all the good answers and the not so informative ones! Obviously the Hurricane came and went....

Hope all the folks in the affected areas are recovering well and my heart goes out to them!

I ended up in Punta San Carlos and here now. Surf is pumping, its hot and muggy but enjoying every bit of mex.

Amazing to drive here and see so little 18 wheeler traffic....

adios
