Typically they do not check, but this is Mexico and "typically" can change in a heartbeat. One never knows! There could be a heavy fine if found without one. It is always been my experience to be as legal as you can. This is not your country, be wise.

Expired passport will give you troubles coming back into the U.S.

BB, actually thats false. A expired passport just means expired and doesnt invalidate citizenship. When traveling by LAND you can use an expired one. They wont even blink an eye when returning as I have personally done it.

Now back to "The Mexican Tourist Card" :)

thanks

Tourist Card-
Very easy, when crossing the border go into the SAT building all the way on the right as you are going to cross- You can go into the auto declaration area- Ask for the Visa desk, fill out the paper form and pay $25.00 - Voila Easy to do.

The Consulate in San Diego does not issue Tourist Visas - Visitante visa.

Mexico INM requires a valid passport to issue you an FMM (tourist card).
You do not need a passport to return to U.S., it is only requested.

I have not been asked for a tourist card in Guerro for years. I pass through there 6 more times a year and not a concern anymore. Just have your 10 peso tire spray money ready.....

Near Guerrero Negro, just inside the state border (Eagle Monument, 28º Parallel) had my tourist card checked in 2001, 2007, 2009, and in 2012 a new ALTO sign was at the INM check office, so we came to a stop in front of the INM office where the guy looked up and waved on without looking (first time).

Perhaps I am just lucky to always see an immigration officer there, or you guys drive at night, or take the detour around that part of Hwy. 1, like the locals do to avoid the bug spray thing?

Anyway, better to have it and not need it... then to need it and not have it. edm1 was fined $100 US because his wife did not have one... because her passport was expired when they tried to get it at the border... and the officer at Guerrero Negro got them for it... this was in July, 2011.

Don't worry about it. Go have fun and if they get u for a $100... Whatever! That means you have about an hour less of Cabo nightlife. Chances are good you will be fine.

Errmm, don't want to rain on your parade, but you're heading down the Peninsula on TUESDAY? Are you not watching the news right now? I think you should take a looooooong look at what you're heading into; this is the Full Monty of storms, amigo. Gonna be some major breaches in Hwy 1 methinks. Your tourist card will be the least of your worries. Good luck.

I think a valid visa and passport invalidates bad roads.....I would also rethink that trip....

Yes, but the OP's friend has an expired passport. My experience is that they do check the expiration when you get your FMM.

Also, buena suerte driving, that hurricane looks like a monster.

Don't worry, be happy. Enjoy your adventure/trip but watch the vados. Your chances of being asked for your tourist card are about 0.01% and while the US border agent may read you the riot act he's not going to turn you back.
