2014 Baja 1000 Map

TMW - 10-5-2014 at 11:35 AM

David K - 10-5-2014 at 05:37 PM

Ateo posted the same map in the Baja News forum yesterday... looks like it is off Score's Facebook page?

Hope to see a higher quality map come out... and maybe with Gulf spelled correctly too?

AKgringo - 10-5-2014 at 06:04 PM

That is Spanglish for Golfo de California!

TMW - 10-6-2014 at 09:41 AM

SCORE has a high quality map on it's web site but it's too big to print. When you pull up the map at the top right you can click on the better map. I'm not smart enough to re-size it.

whistler - 10-6-2014 at 11:28 AM

Looks pretty good that we will be entered.

LaTijereta - 10-6-2014 at 03:13 PM

Course notes and mileage marks should be posted on or around the 12th.. When pre-running can begin..

Thanks Tom... here is the map on the web site, sized to fit on Nomad, which doesn't offer any more detail than the one you have... soooo, I zoomed in and made 7 sectional maps from it:

Edit>.. new course change map around El Rosario:

Uhh Huhh!

captkw - 10-6-2014 at 08:47 PM

And I always thought it was "Del Mar de Cortez" !!

David K - 10-6-2014 at 10:38 PM

Do you like the Buena Aventura on Bahia Concepcion??? But heck, they spelled Puertecitos and Guerrero Negro correctly, so I think we can give them a pass on Golf of California and Buena Aventura!

[Edited on 10-7-2014 by David K]

Hola DK

captkw - 10-7-2014 at 12:03 AM

I cant spell in any way... spanish or English and don't do math (that's for calculators,,NO?) but "golf of calf. is SOO wrong !! sounds like the last gov of cali......LOL....BTW Subaru's are a decent off pavement unit..just keep the CV boots and joints serviced !!! Great pics as always !! K&T

Does anyone know how to find the GPS co-ordinates to Check-7?

I'm guessing N26 26 07.3 W111 38 18.0, where the road from La Purisima connects to highway 1

TMW - 10-8-2014 at 10:05 AM

Using the 2012 B1K Google Earth as a ref. Check point 7 will be about 2.5 miles west of hwy 1 KM60 on the road to La Purisima. This is where the race course turns south.

2012 Check 5 shown here will be Check point 7 in the 2014 race

David K - 10-8-2014 at 04:47 PM

There you have it... Perfect answer from TW!

If I read the numbers right: N26º24.650', W111º40.050'

The nearby rancho is Canipole, and that is on most Baja maps and dates back many many years.

jack - 10-10-2014 at 11:56 AM

Thanks guys, I'm hoping to be at that corner when the bikes and trophy trucks roll through.

TMW - 10-10-2014 at 07:59 PM

Before the 450 bikes became standard the KX500 and XR650 bikes on a run to La Paz averaged 60mph. Now I think they are closer to 50-55mph. If CK7 is 800 miles it will take them between 14.5 to 16 hours to get there. That would be 8:30-10pm. Have a good dinner set down and relax. Hopefully Weatherman will give you a heads up on where the first bikes are, like what went thru CK6 at San Ignacio.

David K - 10-10-2014 at 10:26 PM

Tom, do you know what time they are starting the bikes (and then the trucks)?

TMW - 10-11-2014 at 10:39 AM

So if the first bike gets to CK7 between 8:30 and 10pm the first TT will get there between 2:30 and 4am. That would put the TTs in La Paz in daylight. I think that's what SCORE wants to showcase the TT at the finish line.

beachbum1A - 10-11-2014 at 05:04 PM

Is there a map (yet) that shows the course mile markers on it?

KasloKid - 10-11-2014 at 07:04 PM

Map and GPS files will be out shortly. Talk of Sunday night, but I think it'll be a couple more days. Staff are pre-running the course now, firming up course details. Map will include mileage markers.

BCSTech - 10-12-2014 at 08:18 AM

Someone associated with the race contacted me last year about supplying a chase truck with a mobile Internet connection for Score to upload live video during the race. Wish I could recall who it was.

I called and left a couple of messages with Score but no response. Just as well I guess. Already pretty busy.

willyAirstream - 11-4-2014 at 03:32 PM

TW
Ck pt 6 will be about 4 hours earlier than ck pt 7? Is that a good guess?

TMW - 11-4-2014 at 04:31 PM

Ck6 is at 735 miles and Ck7 is at 916 miles or 181 race miles and that's a pretty fast section at least after the Laguna. Maybe closer to 3 hours.

LaTijereta - 11-4-2014 at 06:30 PM

Here are some times.. starting at Chk4..

29) CHECKPOINT CLOSING TIMES – Based on 1275 mile course
DRIVERS and RIDERS must average 26.02 mph and will have 49 hours to finish. Slower classes will benefit from the
157.65 miles of pavement allowing higher average speeds and your average on dirt will be lower.
Checkpoint No.
& Location

4 Cocos Corner

5 Bay of LA

7 Canipole

8 Puerto Lopez

Finish – La Paz

CHECKPOINT CLOSING TIMES – Calculations are based on estimated race entries. Closing times shown above DO NOT include time added to early checkpoints to help you finish this year’s Baja 1000. Any changes to the above closing times will be announced at the drivers meeting.
NOTE: Time Added columns in chart above indicate additional time added to checkpoints beyond standard closing times.

TMW - 11-5-2014 at 09:40 AM

The CK PT closing times for the bikes is earlier than for the cars/trucks due to the difference in starting times. Cocos closing time for bikes is 23:21 Thursday.

Race course version 13:

http://pizzamanagement.com/portfolio/2014-baja-1000-map/

Always subject to change, but our team may put me out in the silt beds near Punta Conejo to help with extraction (should it become a problem).

[Edited on 11-5-2014 by StuckSucks]

TMW - 11-5-2014 at 05:40 PM

Silts sucks, I hate silt. We DNF'd the 89 1000 due to silt getting into the engine north of San Juanico. Did I tell you I hate silt.

StuckSucks - 11-5-2014 at 06:40 PM

I made the mistake of quickly locating and extracting the team owner from a silt bed in the '10 1000, 50 miles from the finish (he subsequently finished first in class). Ditto in early '11 at the south end of Laguna Salada. For good or bad, I seem to always get assigned to Silt Duty.

TMW - 11-6-2014 at 08:20 AM

I hope your team really appreciates what you are doing for them as I'm sure they do. Is the Cops team using Checker Pits or a combination of other pits too?

David K - 11-12-2014 at 10:27 AM

Think the race may be grandfathered, as it existed long, long before there was ever a 'protected area'.

First I have heard of it, and since the race starts tomorrow morning, you may be too late?

Millions of dollars to Mexican citizens will probably outweigh damage to a cactus, given that millions of cactus (including giant cardon and cirios) were destroyed in building Hwy. 1, in 1973.

At least dirt roads, the race uses, are environmentally friendly and more natural!

Why are they fussin' now and not all the other years the race passes through there?

David K - 11-12-2014 at 12:11 PM

Just thinking, there is no mining or road building going on that destroys environment. These 'racers' are just vehicles driving on roads... perhaps faster than normal... but on existing roads. Flash floods do way more damage, and don't pay Mexico anything. What is the issue?

Just found out that's where I'm hanging out for extraction purposes for our team. Headed up Thursday morning from La Paz, do some recon, spend the night, and watch the lead TTs come thru Friday after sunrise. Should our new Class 10 have problems, I'll be in position to help. Unsure how much I can help with the TT and Class 1. Um, yep, silt sucks.

Getting close to 2000 miles (from leaving home) in the week I've been down here.

Apply fine on the Baja 1000

The race organizers Baja Mil will be fined up to 50 thousand minimum wage , just over 3.5 million, for making part of their path through protected areas , without the permission and even though he had warned them that did not.
The financial penalty is outside the exercise of civil and criminal actions that are applicable for violation of various environmental standards , according to a press release states of Baja California delegation of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection .

Non-submission of an environmental impact study for activities in these areas , mandatory under Article 5 of the Regulation on Environmental Impact of the General Law of Ecological Balance and Environmental protection .
According to the briefing note for the agency Baja California " not to undermine the settled irregularities in the minutes of raised inspection on 12 November this year may be administratively sanctioned () with a fine equivalent to thirty and fifty thousand days of minimum wage force in the Federal District at the time of imposing the sanction. "

I'm a little fuzzy. This refers to the Valle de los Cirios Pacific Coast? And if so, I'm not seeing the race course anywhere near the protected area. The area is along the west coast and the race course paralleled the highway, on the east side (roughly thru the Cataviña area). Where was the protected area breached?

it stretches from one coast to the other.

rts551 - 11-20-2014 at 04:25 PM

also includes part of the ocean. over 55,500 square miles. Largest in Lating America, created in 1988, at the urging of environmentalists around the world but primarily in the US.

David K - 11-20-2014 at 04:48 PM

Building Highway One was the single most destructive man made event to central Baja's environment, with the 200 meter wide swath clearing through the forests of giant cardon, cirio, and the rest... and the mass murder of all the creatures in the way of the bulldozers.

I don't see any protesters closing down the highway for the death and destruction it caused???

The race, is on dirt roads and some highway, happens only once every 2 years in that area, and a week later you would never know what drove over it.
