Bob53 - 10-8-2014 at 02:27 PM

Or, I could hold your head down under the blue water.

VERNON - 10-8-2014 at 02:35 PM

The comments are cute but I need to know if the vados are passable after the recent rains from "Simon"......especailly around Catavina?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

motoged - 10-8-2014 at 02:38 PM

Highway vados around Catavina are reportedly open, but the one just south of Cat is a bit wet as usual w/ broken pavement....as usual.

Haven't heard details about unpaved roads around Catavina....a surfer could tell you, but he would subsequently have to kill you ;D

VERNON - 10-8-2014 at 02:50 PM

Surfing in Catavina..............now that is some serious entertainment!

motoged - 10-8-2014 at 02:53 PM

Yes....all those sand roads going west....I will tell you in January how they are ....just sit right there...

chuckie - 10-8-2014 at 03:15 PM

You have to excuse Motoged..he is suffering from beer buying welching remorse....

VERNON - 10-8-2014 at 04:14 PM

Thanks for the info

I need to bring a generator. pressure and other supplies down to clean up my casita asap but I might have to wait...........mud will probably be like cement by that time!

bajaspuds - 10-8-2014 at 05:03 PM

Any first-hand road news on Hwy 1, after the rains from TS Simon?

woody with a view - 10-8-2014 at 05:18 PM

if it was bad it would be front page news! Simon fizzled. just go.

bajabuddha - 10-8-2014 at 05:22 PM

STOMP THE NEWBIES! STOMP THE NEWBIES!

If this was pescador asking from San Quintin and hauling his trailer, this thread would be a bit different, methinks.

Spud and Vernon, maybe one day you too can grow up to be a Nomad... it's all a matter of tenure, everyone gets hazed, and none of us will get outa here alive.
  :bounce:

The report out of El Rosario as of mid-day today is that traffic continues to flow both north and south.

Charles,

When I indicated my Baja trip planning was going to redirect me away from Mulege and I would need to postpone my incredibly generous offer of buying you a beer at the Serenidad (a kind gesture to attempt to demonstrate repentence for my sin of calling the pizza "pedestrian" and creating a furor in that social circle), I also thought I gave you ample time to recover from that emotional let-down.

You even acknowledged that you had "scheduled shrink time to deal with the sorrow".

Now I see that whatever prescription he wrote hasn't reached the proper blood levels yet. Don't worry....sometimes they take several weeks.

However, some of my travel partners have had to back out of our month down there.....so my plans are once again fluid.

At the risk of confusing you and perhaps the diagnosis, please bear with me as I try to possibly reconfigure a month's worth of travel planning to once again find myself having the honour of your presence and the privilege of buying you a beer....Corona is your fave, no?

Should we have that opportunity, I will be belching rather than welching....:biggrin::saint:

Mulegena - 10-9-2014 at 10:19 AM

and Motged and Charles, you may include moi in your little soiree, pedestrian or no. OK?

Question: How about the partially-dirt road far east from Laguna Chapala up to Mexicali? Family intend to drive it north tomorrow. Reports, please?

motoged - 10-9-2014 at 11:02 AM

Mulegna,
Of course....;D

At this time, my trip partners have had to cancel going south so I am scrambling in my head how to do the trip myself or with the one riding buddy who can still come down....

It will take a few weeks before we need to reserve the banquet hall

The graded road from hwy1 by Cocos Corner and on to Gonzaga Bay has been repaired. From Gonzaga Bay to Mexicali the road is in good condition.

repaired, ...did they do some grading...or just fill n the washouts?

Mr RTS

DaliDali - 10-10-2014 at 07:22 AM

RTS........how is the road in off MX 1 to the Campo Rene turnoff?

Thanks.

Pescador - 10-10-2014 at 10:01 AM

Boy, I hate to add to the IQ points already posted here, but the road is fine. I just got in yesterday and everything was fine. There are some vados that have been torn up by running water, but they have those filled in, even though they can be a little rough, since they do not have pavement. There was a lot of water between El Rosario and Guerrero Negro, but everything was passable. It is not advisable to pull off on the side of the road in the dirt areas as everything is a big mudhole and will stick like glue to the truck and trailer. (Don't ask me how I know) After going through Odile, I was really leery of coming down, but I talked to truckers and other travelers as often as possible and knew I was OK to go. It was a rainy, wet son of a gun and the road was slower than normal due to standing water on the road, but that was about the extent.

They did not grade the entire road just the areas that were damaged by the rain. A section about 1 or 2 miles from hwy 1 at Chapala and a couple of large holes between there and Cocos. It appears it was done to get the large tractor Trailer rigs hauling heavy equipment to the Santa Rosalia mining co.

Alan - 10-10-2014 at 09:42 PM

I just drove down yesterday and actually felt the road was better than when I left in June. It was a beautiful drive as Simon has just passed through so everything was clean and green. Road was pretty normal with the standard potholes and broken pavement around Catavina but nothing deep enough to cause concern unless you are running 10" tires. As Pescador stated the asphalt has washed out of a few vados but there was solid rock underlayment so they wasn't any problems and the usual ones have a little more water than normal so just slow down through them. The only work that disrupted traffic was just below Loreto where they are doing some really nice rock work and it looks like they are putting in a Vista Point but we only had to wait about 20 minutes.

It was a great drive. Fall has come to northern Baja as many of the leaves are starting to change and it is dramatically different once you cross into BCS. Everything is lush and green and in bloom (even that dreadfully boring section between Constitucion and La Paz!)
