Huhh,,,Sorta !!

BigOly - 1-10-2015 at 10:37 AM

Very quiet on the east cape. Good for me but not for businesses. Few Cabo bound planes flying overhead. I would say "slow".

Ateo - 1-10-2015 at 10:42 AM

The gringo count was about 250 in the 7 Sisters last week.

bajajudy - 1-10-2015 at 10:42 AM

So far this has been a good season for us. Book sales have been just below normal. Sales in the book store have been brisk this week and the organic market has been close to last year.
We have had guests in our casita almost every night.

Timo1 - 1-10-2015 at 11:57 AM

Driving northbound yesterday there were many headed south including one moho caravan

tobianogreg - 1-10-2015 at 12:01 PM

+2 in a couple of days.

about 35 per sister?

Jack Swords - 1-10-2015 at 12:15 PM

Quiet in La Paz, seems to be fewer gringos. Marinas not full, usually a waiting list. State Department warning for Baja Sur, another reported killing in Cabo last night. Stll beautiful, wonderful people, very green in the mountains.

alacran - 1-10-2015 at 12:25 PM

Mulege, very slow.

sancho - 1-10-2015 at 12:42 PM

Wonder what percentage of total Baja Tourism $ are a due to
fly down Tourists as opposed to drive down visitors?
I would think the fly down folks, with their rooms, restaurant
spending, etc. account for a very large percentage. Where
that $ goes and who benefits is another matter, it may end up in the pockets of corps. and not in the local economy, although it does provide
employment. Obviously
the small towns down 1 rely to a greater degree on vehicle travel

4x4abc - 1-10-2015 at 12:46 PM

La Paz/Centenario very quiet
local hangouts are empty even on a Friday
love it that way!

+3 in La Paz on Monday. YAY!

ehall - 1-10-2015 at 01:34 PM

Coyote cals was empty on Thursday afternoon.

joerover - 1-10-2015 at 01:50 PM

more tourists in chiapas than baja
maybe because the Chiapas cops dont rob the gringos like the bandidos con placas in baja

Pompano - 1-10-2015 at 02:11 PM

If indeed true in some Baja towns, it's not surprising... due to the worldwide travel warnings for all US citizens issued by our State Dept. Could be ISIS or AlQ. Radical Islam. Call it by name.

Poor France is the latest victim of terrorism...perhaps the proposed meeting of European leaders in Paris will make a difference in European-Baja tourism? It might happen if politically-correct Europe can bring themselves to call it terrorism.

actually in mulege...there's lots of foreign plated cars and trucks in town.

you can hardly park

the bank ALWAYS has a big line

Alyth and Albas (grocery stores) always have 2-3 people in front of me

the hardware store is busy all the time

comex (paint store) is doing one of its best years

there's lots of construction around too...people are spending money

it is true the caravans of motorhomes and trailers are not here anymore
but that's the rv industry all over

today the neighbor went out fishing just after 6am and returned before noon with 5 yellowtail split between 3 fisherman

it's a good year for mulege

blackwolfmt - 1-10-2015 at 02:35 PM

I'll bet if Baja fuel prices were like they are up north things would be way different

La Tienda must doing ok. Claudia just ordered more books.

chuckie - 1-10-2015 at 04:18 PM

I guess I don't believe most of that...The YT maybe....From what I hear more of an exodus...But I'll be there in a couple of weeks to see for myself...

shari - 1-11-2015 at 07:40 AM

here in Bahia Asuncion we had the busiest Xmas holiday season ever with really interesting guests from all over the world...mostly young-uns which was cool and epic fishing! It has slowed down now but still steady.

Talking to the whale operators in GN, they have less reservations than last year and are a bit worried about the downturn again in tourism due to gas prices and cartel activity down south.

Bajaboy - 1-11-2015 at 09:00 AM

lots of bicycles on the highway....must have passed 10-15 last Thursday.

shari - 1-11-2015 at 09:04 AM

We chatted with a big group of buff young folks from Seattle riding to Venzuela!

Go read the Talk Baja page on the horrific multiple (3) bicycle/ (3) auto pile up on Hwy. 1 on 1/6/15. My worst fears about the safety of riding bikes where there is no shoulder seems to be valid with the evidence presented? 9 dead according to the Jan. 9 post on Talk Baja (in the thread on the Desert Hawks rescue)!

You can't eat the backstrap off of a bicyclist; not enough marbling.

aguachico - 1-11-2015 at 12:50 PM

I average 5 trips south of el rosario a year spreading at least 1000-$2000 per along the way. The single biggest deterrent is FUEL costs. I run to Bahia Tortugas and back on about 150 gallons of diesel. Hopefully the strong dollar rate will hold as I would like to go to Mag Bay this year.

i just got back from driving from SD to Cabo and back, it seemed to me like The gringo bite was wide open. but then again, i truly have no frame of reference... Bahia Concepcion was quite packed.

as per the fuel bit, i put 2700 miles on the odometer and dropped 470 USD at the pumps. getting only 20 MPG avg with my subaru :(

Lengua - 1-12-2015 at 06:04 PM

What are fuel prices in BCS Lapaz-Cabo? Are they that much higher than Baja Norte? ;)

Pescador - 1-12-2015 at 06:28 PM

Don't know who figured no caravans this year as there was one from British Columbia yesterday that had the gas station in Santa Rosalia blocked up for an hour and a half. Around 30 or more units that I saw.

If using the liters pumped figures off the Pemex pumps to figure your mileage, as a lot of stations have inaccurate pumps favoring the station owner, you will think you are getting terrible mileage. If you know how many gallons (liters) your tank holds, at the various points on the gauge, then you may come up with a better rate for your Subaru.

For example, I know that when I am down to the 1/4 tank line on my gauge, I have used 13 gallons. When I filled up at that point in Tecate, I recall they got close to 16 gallons in!!! That will make you think you are getting terrible mileage! Call it the having fun in Mexico tax and don't let it spoil your trip.

Gasoline prices are government controlled and all Pemex stations are locked at the same rate, nation-wide... although Nomads post some small differences, sometimes. Perhaps that rule is changed in anticipation of the soon to be free market with competition in gas sales coming soon?

alacran - 1-12-2015 at 07:21 PM

Well B & S, being in the real estate business in Mulege, still you should not tell stories.
I live permanetly in this town for the last 11 years, and know it since 1973.
The count of tourists is way, way down.

chuckie - 1-12-2015 at 07:25 PM

That's what I hear....and many many folks are either selling or walking away...

BFS - 1-12-2015 at 08:16 PM

Todos Santos is packed right now. I would say that numbers are way up.
Restaurants are all busy, rental cars everywhere, lines in the bank and small shops. I counted 49 people in the line up yesterday morning.

BFS-In the lineup at Cerritos?? That's scary. Gonna be down next week and was hoping to get a lot of surf in. Hope it's not too thick. Maybe San P will be a little thinner I hope. Thinking about driving up to Conejo too.

My buddy who sells real estate in Todos is busier than ever. He swears that Obama is really turning things around Stateside and it's translating into more buyers. But that's only his opinion.....

It's highly unlikely section 8 housing and food stamp recipients are driving real estate sales in Todos Santos. Must be another reason.

Over 40 million Americans on food stamps with a dramatic increase since Obama took over doesn't speak well for his economic policy's, as reflected in the results of the mid term elections. This reasoning isn't too hard to follow.

Santa Cruz guys in Baja? They better know they aren't allowed past K38. I love how Surfline posts a video and photo spread on SC locs driving to Baja. Then they do a "Best Bet for Jan 2015: Baja". The following weekend (last) I was told that Northern Baja was completely packed with surfers.

I do have to say that I was in the central region this past year between Christmas and New Years, which I really really hate doing. I drove from Canoas to the Wall on dirt for fun since there weren't any waves. I'll say that 99% of the surfers I saw were at the Wall. Most (99%) were goons it seemed...like it was their first time going past Ensenada and they were really proud of it.

'fun time' was the bajanomad auto-censorship for my phrase describing guys sitting a circle and, umm, having 'fun'?.

I laugh when you gringo surfers take your self righteousness and portable localism to baja. Why cant newbies go have some fun in baja too?

woody with a view - 1-15-2015 at 07:36 AM

we're here for your entertainment, Goat! don't all adventurous "newbies" start their Baja conquests at Cabras or San Jose?

Robertofox - 1-15-2015 at 07:52 AM

Lets face it....surfing ain't what it used to be. When you have boards sold in Costco and Home Depot, you know it ain't right!! My boards are now "wall hangers". My wetsuit sits in the garage getting stiff along with my joints. I'll be 61 in April and I'm spending more time fishing than surfing. I live close to great surf spots but the crowds kill me. I'm turning into a "couch surfer". Don't know if that's a good thing or not. I miss it. I was last out in Oct and had a blast. Dawn patrol is manageable. I'll get one hour of good fun, then bail when all the moms and pops with the kids come. Oooops, am I venting? Sorry! Well who invited me anyway!! I need my coffee. Later....:cool:

BooJumMan - 1-15-2015 at 08:00 AM

For the record I was being sarcastic about the going past K38 thing. (Sorta) That was just a running joke I had with my dad for a while. But the problem is that SC locals are known for being the biggest a-holes in CA. I lived there for 10 years and was always respectful, never had any personal run-ins but had plenty of vibe and stink eye even sitting inside picking off the left overs. So basically, they are the ones who deserve a little reverse localism . ;)

Surfing isn't the way it was that is for sure. Like the leash, Surfline has f-ed up surfing for this timeframe.

Hey goat, I don't think anybody is ready to go play in the freeway anytime soon. It's just if you were anywhere 30 years ago you know it's a lot different than it is today.

Mula - 1-15-2015 at 02:07 PM

Mulege is jammed packed with vehicles in town. Can't hardly get around for all the trucks, campers, etc. And certainly no parking. As of yesterday.

Pompano - 1-15-2015 at 02:36 PM

It was crowded with traffic in 1975 as shown in this photo.

It's not changed much since the highway was built. Like everywhere, folks just like to complain. Hey, it's a national pastime.
