Bajablanca,

If you find a bumper cargo rack it belongs to one of the recent visitors to asuncion. It was stolen from the vehicle while camped at campo sirena about a month ago. Shari can get in touch with the man. Actually that's pretty far from la bocana. I think it's unlikely.

woody with a view - 2-22-2015 at 02:52 PM

where'd ya find it? i wonder if the cotter pin fell out, then the bolt and, whoops, where'd my stuffs go?

vgabndo - 2-22-2015 at 03:07 PM

It was found hidden on the property in front of the campground with the pin still in it.

It has been our experience that petty thieves are often on foot. If they steal too much to carry very far they will hide it in the bushes not far from where they stole it. They will then go find a friend with a car to come and collect the booty.

So, always search the area. Look for prints or any other indication of the direction the thieves likely took. We retrieved a whole bunch of stuff taken from a neighbor's garage including a rolling generator by following the broken tracks. Felt like the Hardy Boys!

We did not however have the cajones to stake out the drop site that night for when the bad guys came back, and they did. We were just happy to know the driver was probably peeed that he had to bring his car out so many miles of bad road for nothing.

vgabndo - 2-23-2015 at 09:34 PM

I relayed a message to Shari at the Lagoon today. Maybe the guy who lost the rack isn't a follower of Nomads, or has no friends on here. Does anyone remember if he reported it stolen to the Policia here?

woody with a view - 2-23-2015 at 10:24 PM

I just tried to search for many phrases and can't find anything. someone did mention losing one, right?

vgabndo - 2-23-2015 at 11:58 PM

Oh there is no doubt that a guy had one stolen from the slab along side the beach house next to the camp ground. It made the internet about the same time that all the thievery was going on at La Bocana. It happened at about the same time I was burglarized, everyone was afraid it was part of a crime spree. It is hard to believe that this rack isn't the missing one. Before I take it off the property it is hidden on (for safekeeping) because of the personality of the guy who owns the property, I'd like to make sure it is the missing hitch rack. I sure don't think the property owner stole it.

I like the way you think.

that sure could be it...the fellow is not a Nomad and did make a report to the policia.

vgabndo - 2-24-2015 at 04:02 PM

I'll stop by their office. Thanks Shari

vgabndo - 2-25-2015 at 11:44 AM

No physical evidence..."case closed".

BajaBlanca - 2-25-2015 at 04:59 PM

glad the owner and hitch have been reunited.

vgabndo - 2-25-2015 at 05:54 PM

When one of the officers asked me if I had the phone number of the person who lost it, the other officer cut in to say that it was on the police report. Who knows when the guy will be back to recover it? I don't think there is a receiver on the back of the Police truck.:lol:

bajabuddha - 2-25-2015 at 06:42 PM

I have kept thinking, "yeah, right..... the Policia will contact the owner". Been there, DIDN'T do that. Vags, let us know the final outcome, just for chits and giggles. Baja es Baja, no problema.

{my edit} and please let me state, this is not an accusation of corruption, but : "who's gonna pay for the phone calls and follow-up?". Just like, "sure, there was a robbery on the beach, but who's gonna pay for the gas to go out and investigate it?"

Lord love a duck, but it's Baja.

It isn't like this municipality can't afford 50 pesos for a phone call. These are nice young guys trying to do a good job for the town. There is a lot of corruption that they know about. This is something they can complete. They'll all packing smart phones and lookin' at 'em all the time. If the guy comes to get it back and it isn't here, I'll likely hear about it, and I'll let you know. That stuff gets around pretty fast in a place where a couple dozen people speak English.

woody with a view - 2-25-2015 at 08:13 PM

how long do the owners have to show up and claim their property before it becomes abandoned?

Probably checking Facebook.

norte - 2-26-2015 at 07:42 AM

since the victim was camped at the campground, why isn't the owner of the campground helping?

vgabndo - 2-26-2015 at 08:41 AM

Who said the victim was staying at the campground? Shari is the owner of the campground and has had limited communications while she is in long term camp at Laguna Ojo de Liebre. She did help by letting us know that a police report had been filed in addition to her posting the theft here. The police remembered the case without looking it up, they instantly dropped everything and moved to recover the stolen property, and agreed that it was probably taken by someone on foot who decided that it was to heavy or obvious to carry very far. There were no footprints.

It isn't unusual for me to think that most people who visit out of the way places in Baja read this forum. Not true! I posted the information here when a camper brought to my attention that it's being stashed in the bushes covered with tumble weeds seemed odd. Most of us living here had heard of the theft so I made the connection. When Shari got back on line and told us that a police report had been filed, I contacted them. I don't know anyone here who is keeping a database of the contact information of people who visit this community. The victim left his phone number with the police.

Anybody else got any criticism of how this was handled? I'll give you the phone number for the police department. We have calm seas, no wind, and bright sun today, I invite you to come to Mexico and chill out.

How the carrier ended up where it was stolen

I think you know where it originated, and the hiding place was less than 100 meters away. It seems likely that the thieves were on foot, the police agree, and decided it was too heavy or too dangerous to carry it back through town. They stashed it in the bushes by Paul Camacho's shed and covered it with brush. When they sobered-up, or thawed out, they might have thought it too dangerous to go back for it. All conjecture, but it didn't end up where it was taken. Just close.

Thanks Woody!

too many holes in this story! its obvious to me vag is the perpetrator and this is nothing more than an attempt to cover up the crime! come on vag, admit it, you've been eyeing that cargo rack for awhile now and couldn't help yourself. fess up, was sheri in on this?

True it is all conjecture. That's why it has entertainment value.

much ado about nothing! that rack looks well used. why are y'all making a big deal about an old rack worth $20? the owner is now 500 miles away in another country, and has probably already bought a replacement for $50 off craigslist.

shari - 2-26-2015 at 02:56 PM

hi all, I am in town for a few minutes between whale frolicks...the fellow who had the rack stolen was NOT camped at the campground but staying at the Beach House and is a regular client of ours and not a Nomad...of course we helped him the moment we heard about it and they made a police report. He will be glad to get it back. It was the first time we had anything stolen from there and quite a surprise.

thanks for your help Vag...over and out.

vgabndo - 2-26-2015 at 03:09 PM

I stand corrected. It appears that Bajaguy is the one that knows for sure where the thing was stolen from. Or maybe Skipjack...and either way, neither one of them knows because it wasn't the campground. This isn't a high crime area, and having something taken from the east end of the driveway slab of Mike's beach house is very unusual. I certainly wouldn't let it deter me from renting his place, and other than that, why does anyone CARE where it was when it was taken. Go play on the freeway.

On edit, Shari posted while I was trying to decide if I was going to bother.
