New F150 vs. Toyota fullsize

David K - 3-12-2015 at 11:31 AM

Toyota full size is called a Tundra (second generation Tundra).
Many Nomads have them, just like many have F-150s.
I would like to hear from both sides, but just for seeing why one truck is appealing to its owner. I don't want anything bigger than a mid-size truck, personally. The Raptor is on the F-150, and that one is very appealing (once the weak spindles are swapped out).

Just read the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Issue.

They've always been a big Toyota proponent but not any longer....Their take for this year.....

"What's not to like? Well, its trucks are somewhat crude and out-classed by just about everything from Detroit, and there's nothing in its lineup that screams, "Let's go for a drive!"

First time I can remember Consumer Reports not recommending Toyotas over just about any other vehicle, especially their trucks.....probably they got taken over by the nutty liberals....

Toyota reliability is hard to judge in an article. someone posted a link to a $850 tail light replacement PARTS ONLY on the new ford!!!!

truthfully, it probably is best judged by the butt-dyno when you test drive both of them.

VW Amarok. With the x change rate:bounce:

They only sell them in Mexico. Got it in Colima back in Nov. I got a Snugtop shell in Mesa Az. It gets amazing mpgs. Its bigger than a Tacoma and smaller than a Tundra. You can put a 4 ft wide piece of plywood between the wheel wells.
I could go on and on .
Go drive one.

F150 and Chevy/GMC 1500 are both much better choices than the Tundra. Test drive each and look around at farmers and contractors and see what lasts when they are really used. Unfortunately, the new truck smell fades fast in all of them. :)

I like the 150 with the 3.5 ecoboost. Awesome performance and gas mileage. Pulls a big trailer (12000 lbs, but get's bad mileage), and handles like a luxury car when not pulling. Not sure about the Toyota.

Marc - 3-12-2015 at 08:35 PM

My Main rides are a Porsche, BMW and a Tundra. Wife drives the BMW most of the time and of course I need 400 HP to get to work in the Porsche. So what do we use for weekend trips? Can't beat the Tundra. I LOVE that truck and hey it also works great in Mexico

Ford guy here...Started with a 86' Bronco then outgrew that and went to a F-350 4x4 crew cab. That was a great truck. Lots of room and just accept the 10mpg. Then went to a 97' F250 4x4 extra cab. Again, great reliable trucks, never let me down. Now I drive a 2011 F-150 4x4 crew cab. Now this truck drives like a car compared to the 3/4 ton trucks. Very comfortable for long trips and I have to have my satellite radio on all the time....just sayin'....Plus...it's an American company.

I too think that's an important consideration.

Pi*sed off Toyota

durrelllrobert - 3-13-2015 at 10:03 AM

From the top of the line Lexus (wonder why they don't want to use the Toyota name?) to the bottom of the line AYgo (sold in Europe) this ad is representative of how Toyota feels about the current publicity:

I thought buying a truck that wasn't going to break down each trip was important for Baja... but when I found out my truck was built in Baja, and is the best one of the three Tacomas I have had, I kind of thought that was just another way to help Baja a little. The Toyota factory where my truck was built is on Hwy. 2 between Tijuana and Tecate... in Baja California, Mexico!

They are all global companies now and there is a good chance that, depending on the model, there is more US manufactured content in a Toyota or Honda, than there is in that "Merican" Ford or Chevy. I know my American Ford truck was built in Canada, and my wife's Jap import Honda CRV, was built in the US.

Yes, and my F-250 was built in Mexico. 2003, ~150,000 miles, no problems.

But, Ford has 80,000 US employees and I would guess 100s of thousands American shareholders. Buying a Ford is good for all those people.

Mexitron - 3-13-2015 at 10:48 AM

My 2015 Silverado was built in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Tundras were more expensive and had less payload capacity. Ford seemed about as good as the Chevy.

Sweetwater - 3-13-2015 at 11:22 AM

Wow, not only Consumer Reports but just finished the Truck review in Car and Driver.

First place was the new F150 with a 9 rating. Same rating, 9, for the Silverado/GMC but they preferred the power to weight of the new Ford. The Dodge Ram was a distant third with an 8 rating and a lot off negative comments. Finally the Toyotas were in 4th with a 7 rating. Comments included "Cheasy" and not just one generation behind but a generation and a half at least. Handling, performance, comfort and space were all negative comments in the review. I have never seen Toyotas score so poorly in any reviews.

BTW, I've always kept my wife and kids in Avalon's and Camry's because they are plug and play people who just expect to get in and drive. We'll be looking at new cars soon for my wife and I'm really interested in the top ranked AWD Subaru. One of my buddies just bought the Outback version and it's incredible. I think my wife is more of a traditional sedan gal so I'll be looking at those closely. It looks like Toyota and Honda have definitely slipped in the global auto/truck markets. Not the heavy favorites they previously were.

David K - 3-13-2015 at 11:52 AM

Subarus are great... wish they made 4WD still instead of AWD. The horizontal motor is amazing, designed from an airplane engine. I owned three Subarus, all with over 100,000 miles on them, mostly on Baja trips (1977-1993).

wessongroup - 3-13-2015 at 02:32 PM

Dittos on the Subaru 2014 and above ... and in most cases, AWD should be OK ... with this unit ... toss a turbo on it ... and go

chuckie - 3-13-2015 at 02:44 PM

I drove a rather worklike F250 just before I came to Baja this year as well as an F150....both were impressive....I likely will buy an F150 this summer....The Tundra to me is represented by its first three letters, "Toy".....

Bajaahh - 3-13-2015 at 10:31 PM

Toyota is offering 0% financing on Tundras right now plus...."Car shoppers who want to support American manufacturing shouldn't dismiss the idea of buying a Toyota or Honda.
According to new rankings from American University's Kogod School of Business, some Japanese cars are more "made in America" than offerings from Ford and Chevy.
The rankings consider data including where an automaker is headquartered and where it assembles its vehicles, produces parts, and conducts research and development.
The Kogod rankings also evaluated the final destination of an automaker's profits. The report argues "the true impact of these (design and manufacturing) activities (by foreign automakers) on the U.S economy is reduced by the repatriation of profits back to the automaker's home country."
Tundras are built in Texas.

I have been very happy with my F-150 4x4 Crew; I am on my 5th in 16 years. The latest is 2013 with the 6.2L and the power, comfort and stability has been the best so far. The F-150s really handle like a good performance car on the road with the low profile all terrain tires. I think if I was only in Baja would swap them out for higher profile tires for more road absorption.

Back in 2007, I switched to a Tacoma 4x4 TRD and really enjoyed it for 6 months, then after a spirited run to Laguna Hansen, I noticed a warp on both sides of the bed. I think it was caused by the flexing of the frame where the bed was pushed against the cab during the upward flex......I took it back and traded it in for a Ford and never thought about going back.

Even though the F-150 costs as much as an import SUV, I find joy in running it through trails and get it scratched up or careless people tracking in dirt or sand or water inside but I am not sure I would enjoy that in a BMW X5....go figure.

Ford all the way :)

TMW - 3-14-2015 at 12:18 PM

This is the age old question that will never be answered since everyone has an opinion based on there experience and desire. I have not looked under any of the newer trucks since I bought my 2004 GMC Z71 but up until then the difference between a Toyota and chevy and Dodge was markedly different. The quality of workmanship in routing cables, hoses, oil and gas lines made the Toyota stand out. I have not been under a Ford in a very long time so I can't say for them nor can I say anything about any truck built since 2004 except the 2007 Tacoma I had as a work truck and it was great. Never in the shop for repairs. The 2001 Dodge before it and my GMC always had to have something fixed. My GMC had to be fixed every six months for the first three years, then at 87,000 miles for fuel pump and 102,000 both heads were replaced.

If your truck is working good for you then that is great. That is what they should be doing.

A new truck every 3 years or so does seem rather excessive.

It may not be NEED, it may be WANT....if he can afford it..more power to him.....
