Punta San Jacinto shipwreck-al Barco

tripledigitken - 4-2-2015 at 11:20 AM

When visiting Casa del Hogar recently we decided to drive a little further down the road and see the shipwreck. It's only a few minutes drive, and worth the time.

The ship Isla del Carmen was wrecked over 30 years ago and rumored to be for insurance reasons, but who knows. We pulled into the yard filled with pangas, and no one bothered us.

Nice looking point for surfing when the swell is up, this day it was almost flat.

This was another item checked off the to do list.

Where did you find your source of the ships name?

i think back in the day you used to be able to read the name,...
surfers call this beach "shipwrecks"
ssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! you are not supposed to know that secret!

first place i surfed in baja

StuckSucks - 4-2-2015 at 12:26 PM

Where is the shipwreck located (in relationship to San Juanico)?

MMc - 4-2-2015 at 12:31 PM

This is San Juanico in northern Baja, just follow the signs and drive to the beach, you can't miss it. As for surf, I'll pass.
30 years ago you could read the name of the ship as it laid on it's side.

willardguy - 4-2-2015 at 12:35 PM

I see the confusion, this is san JACINTO not san JUANICO!

It's about 5 miles north of Camalu, and about 14 miles south of Colonet.

BooJumMan - 4-2-2015 at 01:06 PM

Plenty of other spooky weird mushburger waves around that area too. Hah... Always seems like its socked in with fog too. Last time I was in that area my axle broke, the fog never cleared and it reeked of dead animals. Came to find there was a blue whale carcass on the beach. I still can't wait to go back!

back in the 80's it appeared one night out of the fog and never left. I wasn't there that night. like all ships it had it's name painted on.

same same. There was no place called shipwrecks prior to, you know what. 4 houses is up the road a bit.

David K - 4-2-2015 at 04:47 PM

From the Baja Adventure Book (page 120) 1998 edition:

KM 150: Sedan road west (signed) to Punta San Jacinto, 6 miles. The wreck of a coastal freighter Isla del Carmen, driven ashore in 1981, lives near the point. Known as "Freighters" to surfers, even thouigh there is only one, this place has excellent right point breaks on large swells, some a mile from shore. The road south to Camalú can handle sedans.

That's her! Time hasn't been kind.

David K - 4-2-2015 at 04:52 PM

Isn't amazing anything's left after 34 years in the pounding surf!

tripledigitken - 4-2-2015 at 05:04 PM

Thanks for the additional info.

MMc I could show you some pics of a spot in the hood that would blow your mind!

chippy - 4-2-2015 at 06:18 PM

We used to call that spot rincon de baja back in the late 60s early 70s. 4 casas was the home base back then. They are both week surf spots at best. Great for canadian starters.

churro - 4-2-2015 at 10:17 PM

Surfed there many times. But i didnt know the Casa Del Hogar was there, must have passed the casa a hundred times. I will stop in next time

FYI.. Rick and Maria at the old B&B (drive down to water and go left for a few houses) serve a good breakfast on weekend mornings... The proceeds from the breakfast go to feed and care for abandoned dogs in the area... Look for the kenals as you get close.

Boy, do they have a lot of dogs to care for! And yes Rick cooks a good breakfast and Penny who discovered the Casa Del Hogar lives next door to Rick and Maria!

Ken --- I like the pictures, especially the first one of the shipwreck. It is an interesting area.

Diane,

Do you know the story of the fenced in row of houses just SE of the shipwreck? They were all but deserted.

Ken

woody with a view - 4-3-2015 at 08:57 AM

They are mostly deserted summer homes.

Looked a bit strange, no sign of any activity with only one car, for over 20+- houses. Maybe that explains the chain linked fenced enclosure.

willardguy - 4-3-2015 at 09:05 AM

next door lady visited once years ago and loved it so much she bought a lot there. every single time she's returned its been one of those so cold and foggy days you don't want to get out of the car days!
she just built the ecocasa in rosarito!

It's a testament to how weak and mushy the surf is there...

basautter - 4-4-2015 at 04:50 PM

Very cool! Thanks for sharing :bounce:

MMc - 4-4-2015 at 05:06 PM

Woody, I know the area well. I'll pass on both 4 casas and Shipwrecks for a spot close by or to the south depending on the swell.

To help you and others to see that I do not take credit for other people's photos... THIS is what I posted with the black and white photo, that Carlos copied from my earlier reply and incorrectly said was by me:

From the Baja Adventure Book (page 120) 1998 edition:

KM 150: Sedan road west (signed) to Punta San Jacinto, 6 miles. The wreck of a coastal freighter Isla del Carmen, driven ashore in 1981, lives near the point. woody with a view - 4-11-2015 at 08:43 PM

and since the dust is settling, and we like to clear the air at once, there has NEVER been a surfer who referred to that Blue Moon surf spot as "Freighters".

Blue Moon = it only gets good once in a blue moon, FWIW!
