Baja pretender qualifications:

FrankO - 1-14-2005 at 12:05 PM

1: I go to one place more often than others where I have a trailer where other white people have trailers. I enjoy it there immensely. And when I have it dialed in and my rugrats are a little older it?s going to be a great jumping off point. I do, however, go to as many other places as my life as it is now permits to explore, fish, surf whatever. Hell, even the Yucatan!
2: To put it mildly, my spanish sucks.
3: I interact with locals to the best of my abilities.
4: I like my privacy and guard it passionately.
5: I can be a blunt buttcrack (some prefer to call me a dick but I find that offensive) and sometimes I get drunk.
6: I like to flush my toilet paper.
7: As much as I hate HAVING to work, it's not too awful and can actually be fun and I like the things the paycheck affords me. Money is not bad.
8: I bargain if the situation warrants it and I don?t let waiters rip me off (knowingly).
9: I can?t stand elitists.
10: Add additional qualifications here ____________, even if they might only apply to my unique self!

Braulio - 1-14-2005 at 12:13 PM

To me there are only 2 qualifications:

1) Lack of humility.

2) Thinking that your point of view is more valuable than other's - aka being an a-hole.

Packoderm - 1-14-2005 at 12:46 PM

Maybe the only American qualified to visit Baja is Oprah, but I'm not sure of her Spanish abilities.

bajalera - 1-14-2005 at 01:08 PM

One definition of a real bajaficionado is someone who is able to find enjoyment in a warm bottle of Pacifico.

I'm a Baja Wannabe

bajapablo - 1-14-2005 at 04:57 PM

I wannabe there all the time but can't so I look for info here. This site helps satisfy the cravings.

I have been 3 times in my life (not counting Tijuana) and I wannabe able to go 300 more. I do know what I did on those three trips and am an expert on all things that happened to me on that trip.

The toilet paper thing in the wastebasket is a little weird, but hey, we did the same thing in college when we wanted to show off an extremely large specimen for the next user (we just didn't flush).

Braulio - good words.

It is the same all over the world with all peoples.... self importance, ignorance, arrogance, intolerance, and insensitivity are not limited to cultural, national, political, or religeous boundaries... They are human weaknesses.

The best way to work through weakness is excercise... (exercise a little discretion, humility, tolerance, and sensitivity). We're all learning in this adventure, eh?

Well djh,

Eli - 1-14-2005 at 07:06 PM

You got my attention with that one, I applaud your comment, yes, very well put in deed. I keep practicing, practacing and practicing. They tell me that the greatest teacher is practice, sure hope in this lifetime I finally GET IT! Ah well, with a little help from the angeles, tomorrow, I will get to try and get it again.

Shalom, Sara

Having a bad day

The LIME - that's what the lime is for! To make sure that dang fly doesn't land on the lip of the bottle. It is 100% effective. I have tested it many many times! ;)

bajalera - 1-18-2005 at 11:03 AM

Thank you for that info, Bob H. I've always wondered what you're supposed to do with that lime.

Grover--that's as bad as the time in college when we were in the chewing tobacco phase....we had a terrible habit of spitting into empty beer bottles.....you got it--my roommate accidently drank from the wrong bottle--he was kind of lit so he had about a quarter of a bottle of it before he noticed!:barf::barf::barf:

Pretenders ?

MrBillM - 1-18-2005 at 07:16 PM

These supercilious comments come and go often on this forum, usually originated by a disgruntled Mexican National or just another Leftie Loonie who seems to believe that people who come to Baja to visit or live fulltime or otherwise have some responsibility to meld into the local culture and show our appreciation for being there by doing penance for being "wealthy" visitors from elsewhere.

This is complete Scheisse. The only responsibility anyone has is to pay their way , obey the law and treat others with the respect due them. I have no right to expect anyone in Mexico to be able to communicate with me in English if my Spanish is deficient, but I have no responsibility to improve it. I simply won't benefit from whatever I would have otherwise. Years ago, of course, there was a lot more incentive to become proficient in the language, but nowadays you can find English spoken just about anywhere I intend to go. Even the voice messages on my new Telcel phone are in English.
It's a small world, after all.

Toured a Corona bottling depot on the mainland years ago...

The quality control was non-existant. Turned me off so bad, and that's why I will never drink another Corona. I could be as parched as a popcorn fart and you couldn't offer me a case of cold Corona to quench my thirst. No way Hose A. I'd rather die of thirst.

Seriously

FrankO - 1-18-2005 at 08:38 PM

This was all in jest.

Braulio - 1-19-2005 at 09:19 AM

No jesting muchachos - I coined the term "Baja Pretenders" to describe hypocritical folks (like JR) who criticize others for not being able to speak spanish while at the same time not having much command of the language themselves.

So here it's being used to describe anyone who doesn't speak spanish fluently.

Weird.

And funny.

Braulio

FrankO - 1-19-2005 at 09:39 AM

re-read the original post. My tongue was planted pretty firmly in my cheek. It's easy to poke at the pompous. Obviously I have cheapened myself. I swore I wouldn't do that anymore, damn it!

Pregunta

MrBillM - 1-19-2005 at 09:41 AM

Since the REALLY important question of Mexican Beer has been discussed: While
roaming around the desert near mi casa, I found a Corona Beer Bottle that I've never seen before. It's the same physical shape and size as the current one (325 ml), but it
is a dark bottle with a yellow paper label that says Corona Extra. I've been buying Corona and Corona Extra in Mexico for 30 years and this is the first time I've seen this bottle. Anybody else ?

On the same subject, years ago I had a neighbor who bought Tecate Beer because he thought that the Beer would stay fresh longer in the dark bottles. I pointed out that most people don't store their beer in the Sunlight. In addition, I had a bottle of Corona Extra on my bookcase still sealed with a used Lime in the bottom. I saved that to show to people the value of being able to see the Beer before you drink it. After a number of years, though, the lime disolved.

One final note on a Weighty subject. Back in El Norte, I don't flush my toilet paper either. We have a Septic Tank and I've found the interval between digging up and pumping the tank is longer without all that paper in there.

PacO - 1-19-2005 at 09:47 AM

Store beer?

Braulio - 1-19-2005 at 09:53 AM

Franko -

Got it.

Sometimes I have the bad habit of taking things too seriously.

Usually beer cures it temporarily.

Vis-a-vis JR - I should probably keep my cyber yap shut until I meet the man. I've heard some good things about him through this board. Time'll tell.

bajalera - 1-19-2005 at 11:09 AM

Braulio, I think you've got a point there--my view of JR changed after meeting him. Some day I'd like to get acquainted with Baja Blackie and Mexicali in person, to see if this might also bring about a revision of opinion--theirs as well as mine. Or at least a degree of mutual civility that has yet to occur on this board.

Braulio - 1-19-2005 at 11:18 AM

Bajalera -

Let's not go overboard on the love-fest thing.

Vis-a-vis you - I still think you're a troublemaker.

bajalera - 1-19-2005 at 12:01 PM

Braulio, can you cite one instance in which I've initiated controversy? I have responded to posts that strike me as being rude, but can't recall ever starting a battle.

Lera

You two....

Gypsy Jan - 1-19-2005 at 08:25 PM

FrankO...

Just how cheap are you? And do you deliver?

Since beer and Coca Cola are so iffy, it must be tequila, tequila, tequila (and Mexican limes, nature's antibiotic cleanser).

>>Message to the pompous and humour impaired, *tongue is firmly planted in cheek* ;D ;D ;D

Poor? Maybe

FrankO - 1-19-2005 at 08:39 PM

Cheap? Never. Cheapened? Often. Must be that Catholic upbringing. And being Irish, it's not really in my nature to drink. Anymore. Or any less.

OK Braulio

jrbaja - 1-21-2005 at 10:29 AM

You don't know me. And whether you think I speak Spanish and am a hypocrite or not, you don't know jack about it.
You speak Spanish maybe but you have no grasp of what you are saying about others. They call that Novela here clown.
And you are one!
I spend more time with the local folks in Baja who don't speak a word of English and manage to fish for free, eat at all their homes, and have a pretty good trading business going on in the most rural parts of Baja. I obviously can get my points across without being judged by some gringo pendejo who insists on making fun of those trying to learn how to speak Spanish. A true pendejo.
Maybe if you spent some time away from your Spanish dictionary and the gringo enclaves, you would learn what speaking a language is all about!
For those that think that speaking Spanish in Mexico is not important, what foolish thoughts these P-nche gringos have in their self centered selves. True " ugly americans" to be sure!

You da man, JR, no doubt about it. A legend in your own mind.

And, you certainly have Braulio pegged, especially about the Gringo Enclave part.:lol::lol::lol:

Yep Roberto

jrbaja - 1-21-2005 at 11:07 AM

And I'm also pretty popular with the Mexicans here in Baja.
In fact, the only people who need to call me names and stuff are about 7 people on Baja Nomads who are lucky if they get to spend a week or two in Baja per year.:lol::lol:
And, Baja is better off for not having them here!

Braulio - 1-21-2005 at 12:39 PM

...and that - mi estimado grover - is proper utilization of bait.

Quod Erat Demonstrandum Wey

Any other questions grasshopper?

for Jr

fdt - 1-21-2005 at 02:55 PM

I am wondering when your Mexican friends are going to let you know that we do'nt call it Baja

that is the name

fdt - 1-21-2005 at 04:20 PM

Not Baja, but Baja California. At least that is what it's called by us in Baja California.

Braulio, could you give me a heads up?

Things are a little slow down here and I am in need of a little sport.

Braulio - 1-21-2005 at 06:56 PM

Dave - You lost me - what do you need a heads up in regards to?

BTW - do they make you wear a bicycle helmet for the Rosarito-Ensenada ride deal? Does it go by your place? I'll probably be coming over from Mexicali with a group of caguameros.

Braulio - 1-21-2005 at 06:59 PM

Grover - noun gender is important man - without it we'd be referring to JR as Joto R - and we wouldn't want that would we.

First rule about Dave - he has a great, dry sense of humor. That said, I believe he wants to witness the meeting between you and JR. Come to think of it, I might want to be there too. :o

Braulio - 1-21-2005 at 07:13 PM

Thanks for the heads up about the heads up Beto.

Actually meeting someone like JR isn't high on my list of priorities - my free time is extremely precious - I'd have to ask myself - ?Why?

Me too

Don't know about the helmets.

Right by my front door.

If you bring a group of caguameras I will bring the caguamas.;D

Re: Bike ride

PacO - 1-23-2005 at 07:11 PM

Wear a helmet if you're going to do it. There are a lot of people that do it that have no idea how to ride in large groups and I have seen some grinder crashes..... some serious head trauma.
Stay to the left
