Baja pretender qualifications:

1: I go to one place more often than others where I have a trailer where other white people have trailers. I enjoy it there immensely. And when I have it dialed in and my rugrats are a little older it?s going to be a great jumping off point. I do, however, go to as many other places as my life as it is now permits to explore, fish, surf whatever. Hell, even the Yucatan!
2: To put it mildly, my spanish sucks.
3: I interact with locals to the best of my abilities.
4: I like my privacy and guard it passionately.
5: I can be a blunt buttcrack (some prefer to call me a dick but I find that offensive) and sometimes I get drunk.
6: I like to flush my toilet paper.
7: As much as I hate HAVING to work, it's not too awful and can actually be fun and I like the things the paycheck affords me. Money is not bad.
8: I bargain if the situation warrants it and I don?t let waiters rip me off (knowingly).
9: I can?t stand elitists.
10: Add additional qualifications here ____________, even if they might only apply to my unique self!

To me there are only 2 qualifications:

1) Lack of humility.

2) Thinking that your point of view is more valuable than other's - aka being an a-hole.

Maybe the only American qualified to visit Baja is Oprah, but I'm not sure of her Spanish abilities.

One definition of a real bajaficionado is someone who is able to find enjoyment in a warm bottle of Pacifico.

I'm a Baja Wannabe

I wannabe there all the time but can't so I look for info here. This site helps satisfy the cravings.

I have been 3 times in my life (not counting Tijuana) and I wannabe able to go 300 more. I do know what I did on those three trips and am an expert on all things that happened to me on that trip.

The toilet paper thing in the wastebasket is a little weird, but hey, we did the same thing in college when we wanted to show off an extremely large specimen for the next user (we just didn't flush).

Braulio - good words.

It is the same all over the world with all peoples.... self importance, ignorance, arrogance, intolerance, and insensitivity are not limited to cultural, national, political, or religeous boundaries... They are human weaknesses.

The best way to work through weakness is excercise... (exercise a little discretion, humility, tolerance, and sensitivity). We're all learning in this adventure, eh?

The LIME - that's what the lime is for! To make sure that dang fly doesn't land on the lip of the bottle. It is 100% effective. I have tested it many many times! ;)

Thank you for that info, Bob H. I've always wondered what you're supposed to do with that lime.

Pretenders ?

These supercilious comments come and go often on this forum, usually originated by a disgruntled Mexican National or just another Leftie Loonie who seems to believe that people who come to Baja to visit or live fulltime or otherwise have some responsibility to meld into the local culture and show our appreciation for being there by doing penance for being "wealthy" visitors from elsewhere.

This is complete Scheisse. The only responsibility anyone has is to pay their way , obey the law and treat others with the respect due them. I have no right to expect anyone in Mexico to be able to communicate with me in English if my Spanish is deficient, but I have no responsibility to improve it. I simply won't benefit from whatever I would have otherwise. Years ago, of course, there was a lot more incentive to become proficient in the language, but nowadays you can find English spoken just about anywhere I intend to go. Even the voice messages on my new Telcel phone are in English.
It's a small world, after all.

Toured a Corona bottling depot on the mainland years ago...

The quality control was non-existant. Turned me off so bad, and that's why I will never drink another Corona. I could be as parched as a popcorn fart and you couldn't offer me a case of cold Corona to quench my thirst. No way Hose A. I'd rather die of thirst.

No jesting muchachos - I coined the term "Baja Pretenders" to describe hypocritical folks (like JR) who criticize others for not being able to speak spanish while at the same time not having much command of the language themselves.

So here it's being used to describe anyone who doesn't speak spanish fluently.

Weird.

And funny.

re-read the original post. My tongue was planted pretty firmly in my cheek. It's easy to poke at the pompous. Obviously I have cheapened myself. I swore I wouldn't do that anymore, damn it!
