David K's 'haters'??

Phil S - 2-10-2016 at 07:56 PM

Anyone notice that 'those' who have a problem with David K seems to be the high posters.? Reminds me of the "bullies" from 'grade school'. And the amazing thing, this seems, that they never 'get over it'?????? Have any of you ever "decked" him when you've met him personally? Wouldn't surprise me. Wouldn't surprise me either if your all "divorcees' at one time or another in your life." Sort of a need to know question I guess. After thought. Perhaps it happens to be a personality trait that hates people that want to be helpful. Viva La David k for his maps, pictures and comments. Be tough David K.

Sandlefoot - 2-10-2016 at 08:02 PM

I agree Phil, but to help explain those haters. I really doubt if they have anything better to do with their time/life, so this gives them purpose. See David is helping them without even trying!!!

All is well in La Paz

Happy Trails

Well said Phil S. Not sure why some are so negative:?:

hombre66 - 2-10-2016 at 08:16 PM

David K's gold stars are much greater than his brown stars, as any relatively clear thinking Nomad could deduct. But in my short time as a Nomad, I have also noticed that he sets himself up for abuse a little too often. The bottom feeders anywhere and everywhere are a fact of life. DK, excersize restraint on the enviro/politico matters, unless you are really enjoying the dance. If so... freak out and have fun, (as we used to say back in the 60's). Nomads is a fun place to be..right?

Udo - 2-10-2016 at 09:45 PM

DK has a lot thicker skin than I have.

In my 8 years as a Nomad, I have seen numerous members quit this board over lesser abuse than David has taken.

I know that David and his beautiful wife Elizabeth (who never says much of anything on this board) has a great heart, and were it not for him, his maps, advice, photos, trip reports, answers to questions, and numerous friendships throughout Baja, this board would be just another bulletin board.

This thread could have been started 10 or 15 years ago. Somethings never change.

He obviously does stuff to rub some the wrong way. Denying that is folly.

As long as Sun Boy stays away from commenting on photo sizes I can mostly tolerate him these days.

ARE YOU HIGH ON DRUGS????
you do know this wannabe baja guru you're defending is fast approaching FIFTY THOUSAND posts! not to mention another TEN THOUSAND posts over at tacomaworld! and you're telling us WE must be "probably a bunch of divorced losers with nothing better to do"????
now make no mistake, although we might roll our eyes at the repetitive maps, google earth, mission, and tires in the sand photo's,thats all baja related.
where the problem comes in,david CANNOT stop himself from constantly promoting HIS political agenda, whether or not you happen to agree with it, IT SIMPLE DOES NOT BELONG HERE!
tell you what Phil here's what you do. take the rest of 2016 off and start reviewing all of davids FIFTY THOUSAND posts and i'll bet you'll find almost without exception every nomad whizzing match can be traced back to your beloved mapman spouting some chit about global warming, how big government ruined his life or some political rant that has absolutely no business on a baja forum.
please....report back with your findings!

we'll see how long this lasts, negative comments about david usually mysteriously disappear.....

Thank you David K for the wealth of info you have provided to Nomads. And to the entertainment too. Keep it up! :bounce::bounce:

paranewbi - 2-11-2016 at 05:45 AM

I'll jump in here;
What I know about I share...want to know something about the TJ airport or Volaris airlines? I post. My 45 years of traveling Mexico and Central America get pretty well covered, so I enjoy others postings. My son's 8 years in prison and exoneration of a false conviction don't have much to do with Baja nor my Construction business, 4 marriages, 15 grandkids either...so I'll probably never reach high posting numbers.
Now, if I had a notion to map the most hidden treasures of Baja, read volumes on it's history, wrote a book, led tours, loved off road vehicles, AND CARED MUCH ABOUT ALL OF YOU like family.
I'd be like DK...
But most of the time I can hardly stand my family.
So I go to Baja.

rts551 - 2-11-2016 at 07:22 AM

I love David.

Just not his whining, or politics. I can even tolerate his maps (which sometimes overwhelm the original post) or his constant attempt at correcting photos. His exuberance to help can lead though to posting information that is years old. Those of you that travel Baja extensively and frequently, know this can get people in trouble, as things constantly change.

I have bantered with DK since the Amigo de Baja days. I love him.

soulpatch - 2-11-2016 at 07:30 AM

Wow, glad I read that.
That was damn near close to interesting!

If you want to post polarizing commentary expect to attract the accompanying energy that it draws.

It's a pretty simple equation.

I don't care too much what anybody posts as long as you can leave the personal and the made up out of it..... if a case can be stated then that is about it.... how compelling that case is is what matters and repeating it thousands of times won't change the acceptance or rejection of it.

I would never expect David and I to share political beliefs and that is OK.

4 pages of maps is called acting out. Kids do that.

4x4abc - 2-11-2016 at 09:40 AM

I have a serious problem with David's maps. They make me get lost for hours in my maps and collected data - comparing names and locations. I get nothing else done those days. Luckily nobody is breathing down my neck to fix the kitchen sink or other rather unimportant things.

However, I have learned so much from Sensei David about Baja that I am very grateful.

Keep them coming David!

OP, NO one here 'hates', 'wants to deck him', a little juvenile
don't you think? As mentioned, these exchanges go back to
'96 or so, back to the Amigos de Baja days, 'the gotchas', 'I know than you do'. Bullied? I think he thoroughly enjoys the sparing.
A couple different camps here on issues, no doubt. But he does
not need a support group,
a pity party, he more than defends himself. Hillary? No kidding, he has
come a long way. My favorite is the hand drawn map to
Calamajue. OP. raising the bar next time would be appreciated

elbeau - 2-11-2016 at 10:09 AM

The DK I Know:

As many of you know, I'm a guy with some pretty fringe theories about Baja (http://bofmmodel.org), and a few years ago I thought I had stumbled across Google Earth images of a "lost mission" in a remote arroyo there. Basically everyone on Nomad thought I was nuts, but those same people were also very welcoming of me as a new member, nuts or not.

Despite the fact that DK was certain that I was wrong, he spent considerable time and effort helping me search for information regarding the site and regarding lost mission myths. But his help didn't stop there, he was also instrumental in organizing a trip that eight awesome nomads took to the site, including a couple of the Nomads who have posted in this thread. They drove, they camped, they completed a difficult hike down the arroyo and back. The result? ...well... It turns out that I was nuts  but I gained some real friends here on Nomad, not the least of whom is DK:)

As I continue my fringe studies of the peninsula, I occasionally ping DK when I have questions or when I want an informed opinion about its history. What I like about DK is that even though he thinks my fringe theories are nuts, he's always willing to offer help and opinions whenever he can. Compare that to how people treat him in return when they think he is nuts.

Sure, he drinks a lot more "conservative Kool-Aid" than me and a lot of others here on Nomad, but does that really justify the personal attacks?

Sure, I'm nuts in my own ways, and DK is nuts in his own ways and all y'all are nuts in your own ways, but that's really no excuse for not being civil with each other.

Like many here on Nomad, DK has a love for Baja and enjoys sharing it with others. Enjoy what you think is good about his posts, correct what you think is incorrect about his posts if you must, but above all, just enjoy his company. He's a great guy with a great heart.

Martyman - 2-11-2016 at 10:09 AM

You'd think he'd give up on denying global warming at this point.

I must say I will never go to Shell Island or that dumpy hotel in El Rosario. And thank god Camp Gecko is closed to campers!

I'm definitely a hater.

I have been happily married for 27 years though.

See the sun...keep on scrolling.

Udo - 2-11-2016 at 10:20 AM

How many of us Nomads have ever met David face-to-face?

I generally go way out of my way to exchange greetings (and beers or other beverages) with Nomads, when traveling the peninsula. At least there is a face to connect with when communicating on this board. I notice the overwhelming majority don't even bother with a photo of themselves.

Would you attempt to say what you are directing to someone on this board if you were face-to-face? Probably not, since this board seems to bring an anonymity to the poster.

David has a very thick skin.

I agree, Udo... even if we disagree about ideas we have, when we have met in person and talked, we can better respect each other's rights to have different opinions. Or at least, if we say BS to each other, it is followed by a laugh and a beer.

Shortly after getting on the Internet and Baja forums, I wanted to meet the other 'crazy Baja nuts' that existed. It was fun to know others afflicted with "Baja Fever"! We had a get-together out on the San Clemente pier early in 2000 so TimsBaja and I could meet. I brought Graham with me up from San Diego and met several folks that Tim invited, some still here (Fernando de Tijuana, elgatoloco, Whistler) and some gone (Carlos Fiesta, Lorenzo de Baja). That casual meeting of a couple dozen of us is what led to the creation of my Viva Baja events to introduce posters, Baja web site creators, Baja book authors and Baja businesses. Photos of the four Viva Baja parties are linked at the bottom of my home page: http://vivabaja.com

Michelle (M, who was also at the San Clemente Pier meeting and my Viva Baja events) created her BBBB (Boojum Buddies Baja Bash) parties in Baja, there were 4.

Attending my Viva Baja #4 was Keri of the Pyramid Resort and seeing how cool the Baja book authors were at that event created her Pyramid Resort Book Signing and Wine Tasting events (there were 6 from 2003-2008).

Antonio 'BajaCactus' also wanted to meet the Baja Nomads and held his Baja Cultural Festivals for us in Tijuana (in 2004) and then in El Rosario (2005-2007) plus a Viva Baja Cactus tour and dinner in Tijuana in 2006.

It is about the people and sharing Baja and friendships. Do make an effort to meet others, reach out and introduce yourself, or at least, show your face. It can make a world of difference in how we can better appreciate Baja and each other.

I am here to make friends or at least, be friendly. It's okay to disagree, but don't get angry as neither of us will learn or be convinced of the other idea has validity.

Have a great day!

MMc - 2-11-2016 at 10:56 AM

His Love of Baja undoubted, but I am not a fan of DK's. I think that this is one of the few place he get's to shine and be somebody. There are many here that love that he will do their basic research for them. Having said that, he will not change and I have take my own advice about teaching pigs.

Some of us would like to keep a few places of the radar and nomadlandia a little longer.

I've been a David fan from the beginning and still am. Don't care what his religious or political views are. He is a Master of many things.

I look forward to having a beer with him and laughing -- same with Udo. Lots of decent people here who are passionate about ideas. I've met shari and Kashydog. They added value to my life.

Salud, David. And Udo.

A joke? I don't think so.

You don't like maps? I'll post one then. That's the David I've known for years. A passive-aggressive character who gets off on this sort of thing.

Virtually every remark willardguy made is true. If there is an altercation on this board you can almost bet David is at the bottom of it. A misunderstood man? I think I understand him just fine.

Well, everything except the support for Clinton. That's unbelievable.

willardguy - 2-11-2016 at 11:35 AM

so David....at these meet and greets to enjoy other nomad's company and talk all things baja do you immediately bust out your perverted thoughts on obama, gore, big government, climate change, big government, blah blah blah? you know, face to face while enjoying that shared beer?
or is it not the place, yet BN is?
I challenge anyone to search any of those key words by david and read page after page of davids political rants.
left, right, red, blue, I could care less, but let me reiterate, IS THIS THE PLACE FOR IT?????
now Doug HAS a place for it, its called the OT and maybe SpecialK needs to grow a pair and take his chit over there?

motoged - 2-11-2016 at 11:40 AM

Hi....my name is Ged and I am a Baja addict.

I have had no problem sharing my face and opinions on this forum.

My first experience with David K was through this forum and his Got Baja? stickers....or one other of them....and proudly stuck it on my tailgate. I then enjoyed his maps and location/lore information he shares.

My political views differ from his and I took the low road (brecha) and have insulted DK more than once. I even U2U'd him a few years ago to apologize and called a moratorium on my intolerant behaviour....but fell from grace before too long.

While I can't teach a pig to sing, I seem able to annoy myself with my own form of bigotry ( def: " intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself."). This realization has helped me reduce the frequency of my singing lessons.

Should David and I ever meet personally, I don't doubt that we might enjoy each others company....and I don't doubt I would express my views even if they were in disagreement....so I don't hide behind my keyboard. Should such an event occur and either of us find the encounter unenjoyable, I trust that we could both handle that.

I have challenged David on his use of the term "hater" as I consider it a juvenile manner of describing differing views and rhetoric....kinda like the "Like" button Facebook Kulture has bestowed upon us.

David, thanks for the maps.

As a Baja addict, I am taking my Ninth Step.... I regret my disrespectful comments and will strive to not repeat such behaviour.

Can I join the group hug?

SFandH - 2-11-2016 at 11:53 AM

People should keep their politics to themselves on this part of the message board. The OT part is the appropriate place.

Does anyone disagree?

David K. has reduced the number of political statements he makes, but in the past he made clear his conservative views and often they included insults to those who have liberal views. Many times those posts caused disagreement and hostility between nomads.

If he had kept his politics to himself or posted them in off topic, this thread would not exist.

Ah the "internet" what a great way to get to know people.....who cares about touring Tijuana and Baja, a four wheel expedition, a book signing, learning about the missions around a campfire or listening to Grahams adventures. You can learn everything you need to know on the old "interweb"....... I know David personally, and I like him!

Just makes ya wanna puke, don't it?

David K - 2-11-2016 at 12:26 PM

My interests in Baja are many.
It began as a fishing paradise for my dad.
It became a joy to explore the dirt roads to see where they went.
My mother loved seeing the old sites, missions, graveyards, mine ruins.
Camping and four wheeling became a lifestyle.
The beach was just a perfect place to decompress from school and work and life in general.
Writing down the odometer reading at points along the road was interesting for me to do and record. I wrote road logs.
Making maps of the many dirt roads I traveled was a hobby.
I got involved in the off road races for a time and thought I wanted to be a mechanic.
This was all by age 22.
I came to appreciate the history and the hardships it was for those who came to Baja before automobiles.
I was fascinated by the passion and energy it took to build the missions and the roads between the missions.
All these things attract us to Baja... not all the people, but different things for different people.
I am so blessed to have seen Baja from border to the tip before the highway was built and how the ranchos operated.
Many of these things will not be understood by future generations unless they are recorded.
The missions are vanishing, in my lifetime, so I have recorded them. They have a fascinating tale to tell. I hope there is a little curiosity out there about them?

Why?

Because...

Baja California IS the Land of Missions! :light:

im callin' boolchit! tenure here means nothing, I don't care HOW LONG david OR you have been here, this is Dougs site and his very first board rule is "must pertain to baja". I don't think he could be any clearer.
if you can't comply maybe this isn't the site for you :?:

Bob53 - 2-11-2016 at 01:21 PM

Well, I have met DK face to face and he's A-OK in my book. Probably the most helpful person on this forum. If you don't like what he posts, don't read it. Very simple.

You are right Dennis. He might be the only thing that keeps this forum going. look at the activity here already.

bezzell - 2-11-2016 at 04:00 PM

unfortunately this site does not facilitate the 'ignore' feature, which would alleviate so many having to wade thru his crap.

David K - 2-11-2016 at 04:18 PM

Seriously "my crap"?
Can you show repeated posts of intentional "crap" or is it just an occasional response? I can't have and share an opinion? Is only one side allowed to have free rein here?

I said already I will try and ignore more, but then why should I if that won't please you bezzell?
Nothing I post here is ever intentionally trying to be rude or nasty, just giving the other side FOR DISCUSSION and without personal attacks.
Please post an example my "crap" where I was the first one to go political in a thread.

46,440.
ANY questions??
The beauty of an ignore feature, is that you could continue and alot of us would not have to endure.
Yes, you've provided many an assistance .... you also litter profusely. Nothing to do with your views per se.
Have a wonderful day.

Thank you all for your support of my Baja addiction!

Phil S - 2-12-2016 at 10:30 AM

I was asked to reread from one of the heavy posters. I actually do read every post on Nomads. Including Davids. That must mean that I am wasting my time in life because of my obsession with Baja. Another observation (which might be wrong) from my readings way before I joined (indicated) is that David must be a Republican. Those that have a problem with David must be Democrats. In my 81 years on this incredible globe, is the liberals don't like what the conservatives have to say. Because ??????? And I don't care. And David K. you do (obviously by your count) "dig in" somewhat in some of your posts. And I'm sure that you are capable of restraining from 'digging' and expressing your political views. And as you said, only after someone else expressed theirs. I can say, that though I do scan over a lot of the high posters "words of wisdom". I think many are just interested in providing number count. But they also have contributed also at times positive things about Baja. Everyone has something to share. It's why I love the Baja Nomads Forum. But the obvious 'hate' dislike or call it whatever for David K sort of overwhelmed me recently and I just had to bring it up. And I've never personally met David, but I do have a 'thing' about people who remind me of 'bullies'. Who react before considering what they have just done. I've spoken my opinion. Viva La Nomads

AKgringo - 2-12-2016 at 10:37 AM

I have never met DK, but I would like to some time when he and Baja Angel are SOB. In the meantime, I will consider him a friend I haven't met yet!

Sometimes I wish my friend would realize that it is 'OK' to have an unspoken (or unwritten) thought, but the truth is, that he has provided more information to more people than anyone else on this board.

I usually check his postings, but if I have seen it before, or is not of interest to me, it is easy to skip it without commenting on it. Some folks let Dave live rent free in their head, and need to lash out every time they see the sunshine avatar!

It doesn't really matter to me whether DK is taking someone's bait, or tossing out his own, the thread ceases to be useful once the exchange of posts goes past correcting facts.

I hope nothing ever curbs Dave's enthusiasm for sharing all things Baja, and he shares less about things that aren't connected to it.

Among Dave's critics, there are a few I would love to meet, and a few I would definitely avoid, but I believe that most of us would get along fine if we wind up sharing the same space and time together. I look forward to it!

David K - 2-12-2016 at 11:07 AM

Thank you so much.
I hope to continue here to share my trips and my discoveries about Baja California (the First California).

I am not trying to make enemies. Obviously, we all have different views about the world. As mentioned above, I generally only have responses to someone else's comment and don't usually begin a political debate. It is a little weird that to a couple of you, that is all you see in my posts? Do you not look at the Trip Reports, Historical Interests and Literature, or Off Roading forums here on Nomad and only at my replies to others who have posted a political comment?
A big percentage of my posts (since a few of you are bothered by the quantity) are short "thank you's", "nice photo," or other such notes. Not many are "long-winded" with little value to Baja travelers, I don't think?

I do try and give as much as I can for all the years of information and entertainment Baja Nomad provides. There are a couple of the complainers here that may have posted (maybe) one trip report to share in all those years? There are people here who freely enjoy the posts and somehow feel noble that they don't share anything here?!

See, we are all different... some give a lot, some give a little, some give nothing... but grief! LOL

Can't we all just get along?

Couldn't agree more, LancairDriver. I'm pretty sure David K would be missed on here. *************. If you can't appreciate someone's passion for something, then you probably aren't very enjoyable to be around.

I actually look forward to the maps. Keep doing what you do, David K.

A K gringo - "A friend I haven't met yet" What a great outlook!

I also have never met David K, but he has provided me with great information by reading his posts.

I appreciate his posts and those of others, they have added to my fun in Baja.

I look forward to many more years of "debating" DK -- always entertaining, and will be even more entertaining after we elect bernie!

Feel the Bern!

sancho - 2-12-2016 at 03:22 PM

To me, the OP stepped into it, and is now trying to get it
off his shoes. Incendiary posts like this serve no purpose.
For a very few, this may be entertaining. For the majority,
probably not. Dig a little deeper next time, come up with
something worthwhile, by the way, what's with the addiction, obsession? Sounds like you guys are trying to out do
each other. I think it is a given we all like Baja

motoged - 2-12-2016 at 03:47 PM

DK outed himself as an addict.....it seemed only suitable to respect his acceptance that he is powerless and is accepting that....and the rest of us picked up on the metaphor....

No harm meant by him or the rest of us....

BajaNomad - 2-12-2016 at 07:16 PM

If it wasn't for David K, this board would not necessarily still exist.

If you're getting any value from it, he's part of the reason, directly or indirectly.

Facts are facts.

Keep the politics off the main area. Just sayin'.

;)

Thank you David.
