"Tequilla" being made and imported by NorCal man

Santiago - 2-24-2016 at 07:03 AM

Interesting piece by Mike Dunne, a wine reporter, regarding a group making tequila just outside of the official appellation area in Mexico here.

mtgoat666 - 2-24-2016 at 07:16 AM

What is this fascination with tequila? I have tried quite a few, and only liked a couple that cost like $500 usd per liter. The overwhelming majority of tequila is really crappy stuff, not worth drinking. There are so many better liquors, and so many other liquors where the premium liquors can be had for lower relative cost.
And don't get me started on the margarita, it's a crappy sugary drink, and like all sugary drinks, they all taste good because it's just a bunch of sugar,... But no one in their right mind in this day and age still drinks sugar drinks,...

Hooker33 - 2-24-2016 at 07:48 AM

I rarely post and seldom agree with Sr. Goat, but on this subject I agree totally. Any good vodka or a Pacifico are my choices. My wife disagrees, however, preferring a margarita.

Russ - 2-24-2016 at 09:01 AM

After taking my meds and reviewing my comments towards mtgoat666 I removed my unfavorable post. Among my years resolutions were trying to be kind to others and try to keep my foot out of my big mouth:o

Udo - 2-24-2016 at 09:17 AM

I'm staying outta this post!

Hooker,

.....So....According to Goat, one more piece of evidence that your wife is not in her "right mind".....

Put her and Goat in a room and see who walks out....

I tended to not like tequila straight very much (popular less expensive brands) but always liked a real margarita.
A few years ago i was introduced to Don Julio Reposada and it changed my attitude. I sip the Don Julio and use lesser tequilas for margs.....

Don Julio has replaced my last favourite, Jamison's Irish whiskey....

Udo - 2-24-2016 at 01:33 PM

Have you tried Don Julio 1942/

(oops...i said I would stay out of this discussion)

motoged - 2-24-2016 at 01:51 PM

Udo,
Not yet....tequila prices in Canada are nuts ($82 for Don Julio)....so I sip judiciously....and await my return to Baja for more frequent enjoyment...:saint:

DENNIS - 2-24-2016 at 03:10 PM

Tequila makes me wanna barf. The only reason ol' timey Mexicans developed the stuff is they didn't have asphalt to distill at the time.

Udo - 2-24-2016 at 03:30 PM

1942, moto, sells for $79-$86 USD, (COSTCO, in Ensenada, and Liqores Don Pisto in Rosarito and Puerto Nuevo, respectively).

It sips well, but I add just two drops of Mexican key limes to a shooter ˝ full. Just another level!

Sorry...perhaps I should not have said I'll stay out of this post.

But TEQUILA is in my avatar!

Martyman - 2-24-2016 at 03:45 PM

It takes a very sophisticated palate to enjoy tequila.

Sweetwater - 2-24-2016 at 04:00 PM

This thread reminds me of a good ole Wyoming saying:

One tequilla
Two tequilla
Three tequilla
Floor

Just download
Tequila Matchmaker

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tastetequi...

It is a great way to find out who makes what tequila utilizing the NOM number.

Udo - 2-25-2016 at 08:33 AM

I don't think that the software is in business any more. I tried to download it and my browser said it could not be found.

Woody,
Got that pic of my tailgate bar at your BoLA casa?

Recipe:

1) Get one of them thar tall Mexican shooter glasses (2 oz ?)
2) Get a glass, cup , or clean tin can of some sort...
3) Find a bit of ice (no, not the wall scrapings from your RV freezer ....unless that's all ya got) and place in container of choice...
4) Pour tequila of choice to top of shooter glass and CAREFULLY pour into glass
5) Duplicate this procedure with Mexican Cointreau (the diesel version of the French liqueur)
6) Squeeze 2-3 Mexican limes into glass w/ salted rim (except in case of clean tin can as rough edge of can might ruin your kisser....
7) Imbibe
8) Add a splash of squirt/7-Up if c-cktail isn't sweet enough for your delicate palate ...or just more Cointreau...
8) Repeat as often as necessary or possible.....

pauldavidmena - 2-25-2016 at 04:46 PM

I'm a Puerto Rican who doesn't care for Rum, which is supposed to be my preferred adult beverage. I'm a big fan of hoppy beers, tart wines (e.g. Sauvignon Blanc) and tequila. Go figure.

While I slap my elbow I will point out that $82 CDN is only about four bucks.

Udo - 2-25-2016 at 08:23 PM

I think you mean $82 Mexican pesos is about $4.00 USD.
$82.00 Canadian dollars is almost $61.00 US dollars.

Udo,
I believe he is making a broma regarding the low value of the Loonie...

Geo_Skip - 2-27-2016 at 04:54 PM

Thanks Goat for an interesting analysis. Friends who enjoy tequila say similar things.

As to tequila requiring a sophisticated palate, while there may be some truth to that....the same can be said for Haggis.

Udo - 2-27-2016 at 05:37 PM

Right now I am sipping some Don Julio 1942.
I deserve it after a great meal at a Venezuelan restaurant called Mil Jugos, in Santa Ana, CA.

The areas and drinks were just as I remember them!

Thanks

Google.....loads of info!!

Areas are a Venezuelan version of GORDITAS, but made with white corn.

I think, IMHO, that to suggest the "Best" of anything in wines or liquors is presumptious...(sp) Different "bests" for different persons. I would like to suggest the WORST, again my opinion, is some swill labeled "El Compadre". It may be good for curing athletes foot, but is not fit for consumption by humans....

absolutely, regardless of what the bajablowhards will want you to believe, its all about what YOU like isn't it?
interestingly enough (at least in this part of baja) el compadre is the house tequila at most bars and restaurants, 100% agave it's fine in a $2 margie, different strokes I suppose!;)

chuckie - 2-28-2016 at 11:09 AM

What I said,,very subjective...

Perceburzr - 2-28-2016 at 10:05 PM

How about the Rattlesnake Tequila at the Baja Mar in San Felipe. I was going to try it but a friend of mine stopped me and said it is the worst tasting thing ever.

Perceburzr - 2-29-2016 at 08:32 AM

I might have to do that. Have you tried it?

Did you read this article? If you did, why the misleading subject line?

''At least for the time being he is content with labeling Dos Volcanes as “spirits distilled from blue agave,”..... because he cannot legally call his product ''tequila.''

Yeah there are some who think margs taste fine with bottled mixes or simple syrup. These yahoos think Andre Cold Duck is a fine champagne.

Funny thread.

Yes I did, but I was beginning to wonder if anyone else had. I used the quotes to convey the work-around he had to go thru but I guess it didn't work.
