Put it down a gopher hole and hear the screams from the gophers.
Common gopher snake, love them.
BTW some are MEAN!! But most are docile. If they hissssssss they are MEAN!!!! Handle with care, they do bite, can`t hurt you but sure can scare you!

Also known as bull snake if you live in New Mexico. They are the good guys of the snake world. They can imitate a rattlesnake, which is cool. They puff up their head and wiggle their tail in brush.

The main thing to see on this pic is the smoothness of the head/neck area; no 'viper-jaws' sticking out on the sides, which buzzworms do have. Still, ya gotta get close enough to look... so Go Pher broke! The coiled posture is also a defense mechanism to mimic and intimidate, which it does do a mighty good job at. Good for keeping down rodent populations (and very small dogs) but not good for the weak of heart.

This snake also looks like a gopher snake to me. I saw one looking like this one between Palo Verde and Punta Chivato two Sundays ago.

Same snake, different sub-species. The southern Baja Gopher snake has the red pattern.

Triangular head with stubby tail = poisonous snake
Round head with pointy tail = non poisonous

Exception = coral snake

Many folks have an unreasonable fear of rattle snakes.
Have fished and hunted central California hill country for many years and encountered many rattlers. Even if you startle them and they coil up and buzz, all you have to do is stand quit and still for a minute or two and the snake will retreat.

And... they're tasty btw.
