Wild Baja -- Part Two to Vizcaino Desert

Fatboy - 5-21-2016 at 10:44 AM

I fill up at the Pemex station before leaving Bahia Asuncion and at this point I have no idea where I am going.

A mile or so out of town I stop and pull out my old beat up copy of The Baja Almanac and after a few minutes I decide to drive south through Punta Prieta, San Hipolito, La Bocana, Punta Abreajos and then back to Highway 1.

I stop and check out a long white beach and enjoy the views.

I stop at the of the salt flats south of La Bocana and watch the vehicles fade in and out of the mirage.

Between Punta Abreajos and the highway I decide to head into the Sierra Santa Clara to camp.

I pick a dirt road and here we go.

After 10 miles or so it is getting late so I turn up a wash looking for a campsite and up the wash but what do I see?

A deer!

Yes I have seen lots of deer, I know. I have spent more time with deer then most people. That is what happens when as a child you have a deer for a 'pet'.

But here in the heart of Vizcaino Desert I was not expecting to see a deer. She slowly bounds away up the wash in front of me. With the bends in the wash I actually see her several more times before I find a camp spot.

I walk the desert as the sun sets, watch a hummingbird land on my hammock as I set up camp, watch a covey of quail find a place to spend the night before I too turn in.

I am up early the next morning and again I wander the desert around camp before going to pack up and head out.

Nice!
Didn't find the Lost Santa Clara Mission, did you???

Could the "deer" have been a pronghorn instead?

No, no lost missions for me :(

Nope, it was a deer. Since I know that they are in that area I keep my eyes open for them.

Saw lots of Pronghorn while living in northern Nevada.

Thanks for the trip reports.

That's a great section of coast. Virtually empty, beautiful beaches, some good breaks that rarely get surfed (Abreojos not withstanding), excellent surf fishing and beachcombing, and perfectly safe to camp off the grid.

Great report!

I so respect minimalist campers and Fatboy is oh so one! Geezo...I have been in Baja over 25 years and never seen a deer! How was the coyote action?

Bajaboy - 5-21-2016 at 02:40 PM

That first picture is Playa San Rafael

Exactly, when driving around Northern California and I see Bigfoot it is like "yeah, huh" but see the same Bigfoot in Escalante, Ut and it is like "WTF!?!?!?"

so sorry you did not take the time to stop by and see us in La Bocana! We could have shared a cup of coffee or a beer on the front porch!

The other day Les and I saw a deer as we were heading out towards highway 1 - it sauntered on by before I could close my mouth and grab the camera.

Thanks for sharing the story and the photos.

pappy - 5-22-2016 at 08:07 AM

cool! one of the biggest bucks(deer) I have ever seen was in the Vizcaino zone.

BajaBlanca - 5-22-2016 at 08:08 AM

it is ALWAYS an offer to all who come by! Our porches (both the B&B and the house) are fine spots to sit and ocean gaze!

Your trip has been truly amazing to read about.

I've had many a beers with some old timers from Asuncion. They've told me about all the deer hunting trips they used to take into the mountains to the south. So yes, there are deer near Bahia Asuncion.

Fatboy - 5-23-2016 at 09:26 AM

It is funny how all the signs out in the desert almost always show deer on them.
