2016 TRAIL OF MISSIONS on TV Sunday Sept. 4, 2016

David K - 8-31-2016 at 04:55 PM

Cameron Steele's new TV special on this year's Trail of Missions off road/ history/ fun tour will air this Sunday... on ABC. Cameron provided each vehicle on the tour with a copy of my new book... Thanks, Cameron!

2016 Monster Energy Trail of Missions presented by BFGoodrich...

18 trucks. 9 days. 2,200 miles. Join the Desert Assassins on the Monster Energy Trail of Missions presented by BFGoodrich Tires TV show THIS Sunday, September 4th at 2pm PST and 3pm EST on ABC's World of X Games as they visit missions in San Borja, San Ignacio, Mulege and Loreto to end up at the final destination in the mountains of the Sierra de la Giganta mountains, San Javier. This is what Baja's all about. #TrailofMissions

Here is the promo clip from Cameron's Desert Assassins Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/DesertAssassins/videos/121811736490...

While not shown in the body of the show, in the introduction are helicopter shots (on the actual show this Sunday), they fly over the 'lost mission' walls near Bahia las Animas (just a couple seconds of air time).

Set your DVR.

Nice promo clip. I've seen all the prior shows, and enjoyed them very much. I've since turned off my cable. Hopefully, this will be online later.

Yes, it will be on YouTube after it airs sometime in Sept. (so it says on Facebook).

On some systems search, use "World of X Games" to find the show or DVR record, this Sunday.

"Trail of Missions" is not listed on some cable services.

It is on ABC TV, which all should get?

BajaMama - 9-2-2016 at 02:26 PM

In the Bay Area, it is on Sunday at 2:00 PM, channel 707 (KGODT, what ever that is). On Comcast Cable...

I hope it is as fun to watch on the big screen for everyone!
Cameron had me check it out to make sure the historical details were okay. I didn't catch anything that needed to be edited, and frankly, the show is more about the overall Baja experience of families traveling together, getting to drive on dirt roads, seeing old missions and abandoned mines, and all the other great stuff that draws many of us back to Baja.

Going for a beach bike ride from here to Torrance Beach and back (~20 miles), then veg down in front of the TV for the 2016 ToM.

Maybe stop at Capt Kidds for feesh and beer.

David K - 9-4-2016 at 10:48 AM

DVR is set, and I am home working in the garage on organizing camping gear for future Baja trips (not at Shell Island this weekend as planned, due to a family member needing help).

Thanks again - fun program, now I need to add Mision San Francisco Borja to the travel plans...

TMW - 9-6-2016 at 08:06 AM

I thought it was a good show and I enjoyed it. They seem to have a lot of trouble with their trucks. Brakes, steering etc. Maybe they just get too hot behind the wheel over the back roads.

David K - 9-6-2016 at 08:16 AM

Ford Raptors... spindle snapped on one (south of Punta Baja) during the 3 days I was with them in 2014... used the helicopter to go to Baja Cactus where the parts trailer was. The Tundra had 0 issues, of course.

Yes, a great mission to visit and a wonderful family there.

If you don't have the book (Baja California Land of Missions) yet, here is my article on San Borja, published by Discover Baja Travel Club a couple years before the book: http://www.discoverbaja.com/2014/08/16/the-spanish-missions-...

Prior shows had some issues with spelling of place names. For example "Punta Chvivato" and "El Resequen" in 2015.

David K - 9-6-2016 at 09:25 AM

Yes, and I think El Requeson was misspelled again this year... we can also nag on Cameron about his pronunciation of places like Pozo Alemán and Sierra Gigante... but the show itself is really about promoting Baja California as a safe and fun place to view history and enjoy dirt roads, the ocean, and more. I only checked on his historic talk as to age of the missions, etc. I think he got it right (good thing as he had my book, 50 actually, before the trip)!

Love Love that show. I have been down most of the roads they took and all the Missions. It has brought back lots of memories of good times on the trail. Did a lot of them with my friend Russ and Pam and George Kelley. Baja is so full of more trails to take.:bounce:

Hi Meany,

I did a bunch of landings at Santa Paula airport last week. the airport is such a cool little place. It's like going back in time 50 years. Sorry for hijacking the thread.

-------------

Cameron pronounces El Requeson as "El Rascanne" or something. Small nits about an otherwise great show. I'm very happy that they are promoting the peninsula.

Meany - 9-6-2016 at 01:10 PM

Yes the airport is one of a kind. A lot of History and some Great old planes. I love going there to watch the old planes fly.

WestyWanderer - 9-7-2016 at 08:25 PM

Anybody out there know the route they took for any of the trail of missions?

BajaMama - 9-8-2016 at 07:19 AM

Re: truck break downs - my hubby and I were cracking up, as the roads looked fairly docile - we are jeepers and do the likes of the Rubicon Trail and the Fordyce. It seemed to us they were just driving too fast for the terrain. Kinda like driving too fast on Hwy 1 between Catavina and the BOLA exit. You WILL sustain damage if you drive too fast!

David K - 9-8-2016 at 08:34 AM

Westy, yes...
Mama, correct!

If you have a Baja Almanac and a copy of David K's Mission book, either one, the missions they went to are pretty easy to get to. The San Borja Mission has the worst road especially from the LA Bay Hwy. Not a 4x4 Rd just rough.

The Loreto mission is in town, the Mulege mission is very near town some may say in town and the San Javier mission has a paved road to it.

Oops I forgot the San Ignacio Mission, it's in town too.

TMW - 9-8-2016 at 11:14 AM

It is too bad they didn't go to the Santa Gertrudis Mission instead of Pozo Aleman. It was a show about the trail of missions.

David K - 9-8-2016 at 11:55 AM

They went to Santa Gertrudis last year. Just mixing it up a little maybe. San Luis Gonzaga is still yet to be featured and it is an original Jesuit stone mission church. So much Baja, so little time!
