crime rate in Baja Sur

barniclebob - 4-3-2017 at 04:04 PM

I was shocked when I read in the Mexico News Daily that 75 homicides have occurred in Baja Sur this year already.Say it aint so please????Is the Nomad community aware of this statistic???Is this all due to Meth heads???How safe is the Baja really???This is scary news

weebray - 4-3-2017 at 04:27 PM

No problem here in La Paz. We just make a dash early in the AM to the market with our bullet proof vests on and hide out the rest of the day in the basement. I suggest you best stay home in the safe confines of South Central.

Statistics

bajaguy - 4-3-2017 at 04:41 PM

You are only seeing what is reported

chuckie - 4-3-2017 at 04:47 PM

You wont hear much here on Nomads..As I have said, people who are over invested are not going to talk about it, for fear their property values and resale possibilities will diminish...Times have changed, it aint the same...Step up to it...

It's as safe as you want to believe it is. Just stay nestled in margaritaville, when the first gringo is kidnapped... then it's a new game

shari - 4-3-2017 at 05:34 PM

Yes crime has increased in Baja as it has in so many places in the world...yes meth associated crimes are up as they are all over the globe...yes most of the murders are cartel related and dont affect tourists...unless you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But the most dangerous thing by far in Baja are the gringos who drive waaaaay tooooo fast. The highway is far more dangerous than any violence that may occur.

No... I dont comment much on it as there is more than enough fear mongering in the media and social sites...and it rarely affects me personally here in our little paradise off the beaten path. We still leave doors unlocked and havent had problems here. One of the villages known thieves who was sort of banished from town just got killed in San Quintin last week...guess he ripped off the wrong person.

Yes times have changed...we only stop for people we know or are obviously in trouble now...I pay more attention to my surroundings and what's going on but i still wouldnt trade living in Baja for anything! I still feel way safer here than in the United States!

chuckie - 4-3-2017 at 06:04 PM

I love Baja more than any place in the world....I have spent likely a third of my life there...BUT denying the problems does no one good..Better to face up to them.

aguachico - 4-3-2017 at 06:44 PM

I agree with Shari. It's only an issue when you make it an issue. Try and score some mota from a stranger... you are in the wrong place.

I have heard gun fire while camping in santa rosallilita, have had dark planes land in Francisquito. Roll back over in my tent, fart, snore and wake to fish another day. I have yet to read about violence against a tourist since the caca started in 2008.

You want chaotic chit? try Mariano - hijole.

I don't read, and whothef*ckareyou anywayzzz? can't remember.

Lee - 4-3-2017 at 10:37 PM

My wife spoke with a local recently in Pesky. She was told 2 armed robberies had taken place in the area. I didn't ask for more info as I don't care about the details. It might have happened against gringoes, or not. It's like parallel worlds.

If crime and violence scares you, there are lots of places you should avoid. Baja has its share of problems. Life goes on. Nobody I know in BCS obsesses about this stuff. If it's printed media, it may be true or not. I think Baja MX appears more dangerous to those outside looking in.

I find it curious that you feel the need to toss these statistics into the circus tent and let the clowns have a field day with it.

Those stats speak for themselves and do not require validation from the liquor infused, alzheimer smoothed brains of the common circus clown.

Nonsense. Individuals don't have the luxury of private worlds.

Clowns having a field day? I love clowns. Nothing wrong with a little fun, eh?

Stats speaking for themselves? Mexico Daily News?

More than double double that just in Los Cabos.

Changes changes everywhere and we here down south are certainly no exception - for sure the big issue is drugs - and that is a very ugly scene.

As far as I know, here in our village, there has been one homicide ever and it involved poaching, not drugs. That is not a bad statistic!

BooJumMan - 4-5-2017 at 12:48 PM

Difficult answer to this one. There are crime stats which you can assume are getting most of the crime, but probably a lot more than actually reported. Maybe I am reading too much news (fake news?) about the crime in Baja, but it is without a doubt a lot worse right now than in recent memory.

In the past year I have been victim of a few weird situations in which nothing bad happened, but was not entirely enjoyable either. That is all I can base it from. Also the few friends I have which have been born and raised in various towns through Baja. All of them agree there is a lot of corruption within the government, meth use is increasing exponentially, and there is more gang violence. None seem too concerned about being caught in the crossfire, so go figure.

jessk68 - 4-6-2017 at 06:55 AM

well i try not to believe everything that is published in the newspapers (it's a big questions whether it is true in the first place) and you can never know it until you come across it in real life (God forbid)

Cancamo - 4-6-2017 at 09:47 AM

I don't think the local newspapers are fabricating fake news including photographs.

Colectivo Pericu, El Sudcaliforniano, Peninsular Digital, Metropolis Mx, BCS Noticias, all local publications reporting the subject with daily violent crime, dismembered bodies, and now kidnapping .
When the US/Canadian press and U.S.State Department get wind of whats going on there will be a travel warning for BCS and then......

When over 90% of crimes never end in convictions it looks bleak.

BajaTed - 4-6-2017 at 12:12 PM

Here is the latest version of the peace map.

It all reminds me of hiking up a talus slope in the Sierra's, two steps forward, one step back.

Did'ya know, every sunset on the ocean is different in Baja?

Tell that to the lady who just got wounded in CAbo.

zzzxxx - 4-6-2017 at 08:39 PM

BSC is fully in play with the cartels these days. Anyone says different is not paying attention. Hate it, but it is true. That being said, I still spend 5 months of the year there. (Don't get me started about the decline in fishing...)

One of the best sources of real info regarding cartels and and MX:

azucena - 4-17-2017 at 12:31 PM

While most gringos may not normally frequent the areas where there is significant violence, it IS happening. Over a hundred people have been murdered since the first of the year in areas north of San Jose. I often shop in the Zacatal area north of San Jose, people are very frightened. While waiting for a friend at the ISSTE near Calle Ancha, I was warned by a local to get out before it got dark.
A body was found on Palo Escopeta road (goes from San Jose to the East Cape)a little over a week ago.
A journalist for Colectivo Pericu was assasinated outside of the City Club, which is just south of the airport a few days ago.

Crystal meth , which has and continues to destroy families here in the US is now common in Baja and is wrecking the same sad and devastating havoc.

The government deployed security forces during Semana Santa, but it does not appear their presence is anything more than temporary.
The problem is real, and those who want to whitewash it are not facing the truth. While this is certainly something to be mindful of, I am not going to let it stop me from spending time in a place I love. Just be aware..

redmesa - 4-17-2017 at 01:28 PM

As the peso goes down the desperation goes up in Mexico. Crime always follows economic disparate. Good people can become very bad quickly when their families are suffering or when they need a fix.

smedley - 4-30-2017 at 09:13 AM

And Baja Sur is supposed to be one of Mexico's safer states. I suppose that refers to the Los Cabos area?

BajaBill74 - 4-30-2017 at 09:23 AM

We've been in Cabo San Lucas for a week so far, and the most violence I've seen was my wife when I tried to order a second after dinner drink.:)

smedley - 4-30-2017 at 03:27 PM

That's good. Just spent a week in San Jose del Cabo and felt safe there
(and did not stay in a tourist area).

bledito - 4-30-2017 at 03:49 PM

the stuff meth is around I have seen it being used. as well as weed. mexico is no different than the USA youth is Youth some take drugs others don.t I would just avoid the areas that they frequent in. late night bars and the like.

Baja has passed you by and you are now lashing out. You are mad you can't go to the places you went to 30 years ago.

Just move on pal and take you unhappiness with ya.

chuckie - 5-2-2017 at 01:27 PM

Thanks for the input, Pal,

JZ, I wish I would be alive long enough for you to have your comment thrown right back in your face, turd-bird.

The dude is on here b-tching about this, that, and the other thing all day long.

If someone is that unhappy they should just shut their trap and not try to bring others down with them.

I have little patience for ppl like that.

bajabuddha - 5-2-2017 at 04:50 PM

I have little people who abbreviate their spelling to seem young and hip, neither of which is true. As the Chuckster would say, "thanks for your input. Pal". (that's what we all learned in Charm School .... )
