Baja Dirt Bikers

motoged - 2-14-2018 at 11:10 PM

Now that I have your attention, I beg for your forgiveness for posting a non-Baja topic ....BUT....wanted to share a link to a series of enduro races that I consider to be most excellent for viewing when you have some time.

These Youtube videos are a collection from the PNW Enduro association 2017 races...Pacific Northwest: BC, Alberta, Washington

GoPro angle is too low first ride, but the rest are good.

Hope you enjoy these .....I have ridden some of the BC trails....but am not a racer...

Thanks. This will give me something to watch since it's raining again.

John Harper - 2-15-2018 at 08:43 AM

What's "raining?" I live in Carlsbad, haven't seen any.

John

bajatrailrider - 2-15-2018 at 09:25 AM

Thank for post love it we got rain all night in Baja. Time to ride wet dirt

ncampion - 2-15-2018 at 09:56 AM

Nice to hear the sound of 2-strokes again.

ehall - 2-15-2018 at 09:59 AM

Those trails are great. The rock garden was rough but looked pretty short. I would probably have to go around some of those bigger logs.

It actually rained in Asuncion yesterday and here in Guerrero Negro it is a mess of puddles and still spitting!

Yes...logs aren't my favourite....but rock gardens are getting easier....now that I sometimes recognize that going over the top is better than plunking through them....

I ride a 450 4 stroke so don't have the 2-smoke "rip"....and that suits my style better as I don't have the racing gene.

We don't have much sand up here...so Baja has taught me the trick: "Ignore all common sense, sit back, and give 'er...", so it is fun these days when getting into the soft stuff.

Have been using Pirelli MT43 rear trials tire (DOT) past 5 years....love it....not great in lots of mud or sandy uphills.....but not that much worse in mud than knobby....may try a knobby first tire this season (more wet) just to see if I have been missing anything.....haven't used one in Baja yet....use a MotoZ Desert HT for Baja....durability is more the issue there than traction....

The mt43 works great in Baja. Usually no mud and lots of traction on dirt and rocks.

How are they in the sand washes?

Jinete Viejo - 2-15-2018 at 02:36 PM

The MT43 works fine in sand washes (not as good as a knobby but still good enough). The MT43 is good for Baja because they get twice the mileage of a knobby. By the way, I think we met GED at the Inn in Asuncion last year. We were the group that arrived a few days after rain had soaked the upstairs room and the person managing the property for Shari (GED?) had busted his back side to get the place cleaned up. We gave you a small tip to show our appreciation. Is that you?

blackwolfmt - 2-15-2018 at 02:39 PM

I didn't care for the MT43 on my 450 mainly because it didn't cut it on single track rocky muddy big tree roots up hill switchbacks ect went back to the scorpion XC which for me was a better all around tire including the sand washes and hills just makes my riden more fun

Yep...that be me

And, yes, the rain a week earlier was a nightmare...and I felt REALLY bad for the bed shortage and the wet sofabed....but the guy making Margs at check-in was kind...as was la propina :saint:

How was the rest of your ride?

bajatrailrider - 2-15-2018 at 08:41 PM

I have used the MT43 for years now in Baja will never go back to a knobby tire. For the hard tight trails I do it is cheating and works everywhere in Baja Except mud. I'm sure when Ed rode with me he wished he had his MT43 that day. Its the only time I ever saw Ed under his bike.

I was resting! Several times too. Hahaha. I hope it was because I had the shinko 505 instead of my normal mt43. Never struggled so much riding with you. I'm still sore.

Overtime was canceled. Got 3 perfect days to ride. Going to put some time in on the wr250 and see if I like it.

bajatrailrider - 2-17-2018 at 09:28 AM

Ok Mr. Ed what is the verdict about you on the 250. I try to only ride my 450 on long trips with dirt road less single track. For my everyday hard tight single track with climbs. My Crf230/254 it is very easy to out climb my 450. Also half the effort to ride at the end of the day I'm good. I ride lots of deep sand with the MT43 at 6psi great hook up. On my 450 I have a cheater 450x18 trails tire. Does not work that good and not lasting as the 450 burns it up fast. What it does do great gives plush ride with tall sidewall. Running the Sedona 120x18 knobby works great from 4 /6 psi. With short sidewall and stiff sidewall at anything ove 6psi it beats you.

ehall - 2-17-2018 at 10:19 AM

The 250 is easy and fun to ride. Very light and low. Of course it's no where near as powerful as my 450 but it's great at singletrack speeds. Getting used to a clutch again is taking a little while.

Lol. Lot of truth right there.

bajatrailrider - 2-17-2018 at 10:14 PM

Rekluse button and Mt43 Ed used first time he rode with me. Ed just rolled over everything I dished out. With little effort getting the hang of the 250 yet.

basautter - 2-18-2018 at 05:29 PM

Nice trick, and it worked. It's raining in Tucson too...luckily I finished my morning ride before it started :bounce::bounce:

Just upgrade the old XR 650R and DRZ for a 2014 KTM 500 and did the Rekluse, I would have to agree the E-button and a Rekluse open up a whole new world of ridding... It's like Viagra for old riders, LOL!

motoged - 2-19-2018 at 09:40 AM

Now all you need is the MT43 and you are "there"...

Oh...and a bigger tank....

Jinete Viejo - 2-20-2018 at 03:48 PM

To answer ged's earlier question, our ride last year was epic. We made an 11 day loop from BoLA to Cabo and back and saw a lot of fantastic scenery, met a lot of nice people, and ate a lot of great food. The private dinner that you and Shari arranged for us at Loncheria Mary was the highlight of the ride. In addition to great sea food, the host had a ton of personality and made us feel most welcome.
Different subject: Do you know how to contact the folks at San Francisquito? I'm not getting a response from the email address JuanPeralta@hotmail.com.
We are going to be there March 8th and I'd like to make sure that gas, food, and cots are available.

PaulW - 2-20-2018 at 04:01 PM

Not the same as what you are trying
But
"Alberto V. Lucero Walfors" <betolucero2003@yahoo.com.mx>
He like to be called "Beto"
He has for rent a house with a double bed and 2 singles in one room and a small one couple place near the beach. We camped in tents on the beach and used his flush toilets. I think he charges $10 per person per night for tent camping. Gas is available.

David K - 2-20-2018 at 04:19 PM

Beto's son joined Nomad as Bajaboi and welcomed us in this post: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=85177

and also created a web page for their property.
It has NICE photos if you press the right buttons!
>>> http://www.puertosf.com/
> 1) http://www.puertosf.com/about.html
> 2) http://www.puertosf.com/faq.html
This was the email for Beto that I was given: aluwalfors@gmail.com.

So glad your ride was that good  ...Thomas was your host at the loncheria....he and wife cook and run a good show...

Again, the wet hide-a-bed haunts me....didn't think to check it after the flood as I spent 3 days drying out bedroom mattress while Juan rebuilt the roof :O:no:

My five months in Asuncion provided me with so many good rides in the areas south and north...figured out my sand phobia that trip.

Jinete Viejo - 2-20-2018 at 10:31 PM

The wet hide-a-bed didn't turn out to be a problem at all. We put a couple of beach chair cushions on top of the couch cushions and I slept like a rock.

which do you remember the most, the flawless trips or the ones with a few mishaps? It's all part of the adventure. lol

motoged - 2-21-2018 at 01:43 PM

It all depends on injuries, breakdowns, and the "squirts".....and how long it took for "it's just a few miles ahead....I think....seems like things have changed since I was here last time"....;)

ehall - 2-21-2018 at 05:22 PM

Hahaha. Been there for all those.

Jinete Viejo - 2-25-2018 at 02:28 PM

For the record, the aluwalfors@gmail.com email address that David K provided worked. Beto got back to me in 4 days. Thanks David.

David K - 2-25-2018 at 03:22 PM

Great!!!

bajatrailrider - 3-4-2018 at 10:00 AM

Last 3 weeks we rode 14 days will go again the try to find San Isidro supply ruins this Monday or Tuesday.

David K - 3-4-2018 at 10:52 AM

The gps for San Isidoro is in my book, which you have. TMW was there in person in early 2016. His photo of it is also in my book, near the back.

TMW - 3-4-2018 at 03:07 PM

Here is my trip report where I went to San Isidoro. Near the end is pictures of it. http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=81801 When you get to the water stream where the blue tarp tent is shown in the pictures (the tarp may be gone) you want to cross the stream and up a short embankment and thru a barbwire fence. It's about 300 feet due north from the fence to the adobe ruins.

bajatrailrider - 3-5-2018 at 09:23 AM

Thank you David and TMW we take off on Motos Tuesday morn to hunt for San Isidoro. We missed it twice even found the bule tarps and gear. Hoping with this picture Mike can find it. Long haul on the motos over 100 miles. This time we will all ride 450s truck bikes to friends house Vicente G. Leave my place at 5am Hope to be on trail by 730. also on the Wrs carry 1 extra gal fuel. Mike wont need extra as his 440 gets close to 50mpg. While the 450s get from pee poor 25 to 35mpg.

bajatrailrider - 3-7-2018 at 09:30 AM

We rode 147 miles from Vicente G at about 40 to 45 miles in the only road Lt or east we did not try. Had a new sign and locked gate we think this is the way San Isidoro. About 10 more miles on main route we saw two guys in Dodge 4x4. We asked them about locked gate road they said they have rancho there . That's where they where going the gate looked new. Few more miles after the Dodge truck new bull dozer road to the Rt west. We went on it 6 miles till we got to D4 tractor. My 450 has the 3.6 gal tank and I took almost half gal extra. It used the whole tank of fuel so I was lucky I took the extra jug of fuel. Nice 8 hour ride the route easy this time because of past rain.

David K - 3-7-2018 at 09:57 AM

The red arrow is pointing to the side road north to San Isidoro:

TMW - 3-7-2018 at 12:52 PM

The turn off to San Isidoro is on top of a hill like a short mesa. The road to SI is all down hill most of the way and the rest is mostly flat.

bajatrailrider - 3-7-2018 at 02:45 PM

That sounds like the place where sign says CLOSED and locked gate just 500ft away. Gate looks new cut branches. Do you have photos of turn off main road . Sad to say I'm sure now closed.
