BajaNomad

newbee, looking for information

postman - 3-17-2005 at 10:27 AM

New to the forum, any forum for that mater. Looking into retiring to the Baja in about 7-10 years. This summer I will be spending 2 weeks in the southern part, La Paz & Todos Santos. Looking to retire some place cheep with very few people around. Would like to here from others who have made the leap to Baja on a perminate basis. Thanks

LaRibereņa - 3-17-2005 at 10:39 AM

Postman, don't forget to check out the East Cape. We have a little house in La Ribera, where the prices are still reasonable. e me if you want more info. elizabeth

In my opinion, in 7 to 10 years there will be nothing cheap in Baja - or many secluded places left anywhere near the shores of Baja.:(

postman - 3-17-2005 at 11:28 AM

Thanks, I realy needed to hear that.

bajajudy - 3-17-2005 at 11:57 AM

I agree with Bob H. If you think you might want to retire here look for something right now and as far away as you can get. Todos Santos has several BIG resorts going in as I type and La Paz is the HOT new place with lotsa activity in the real estate market. Basically Baja is changing and breaking many of our hearts in the process. On the other hand, if you are willing to be somewhere that there are no services there are 1000's of hectares between the border and San Lucas where there is not a soul.
I have been living here(near San Jose del Cabo) permanantly for 5 years and absolutely love it, but I could not possibly have predicted all the changes that have happened in those 5 years. And I can still dust off the camper and go into the desert and not see another person for days.
Jeez the more I type the happier I am.

Bruce R Leech - 3-17-2005 at 12:45 PM

I think you would like it better south of La Paz. this area where I am is to small and to far to go for good shopping. also it is the slowest going aria in Baja. It is to quiet and to beautiful also I wish I had never come here. tell all your Friends not to consider retiring here.

Retire

Price - 3-17-2005 at 01:48 PM

We just bought a house in San Felipe - on the Sea of Cortez - we will be retiring there sometime this year - can't wait ! This is a dream area - but yoou might like Baja Sur better !
:lol::lol::lol:

yankeeirishman - 3-17-2005 at 01:48 PM

Try Punta Finale. Not too far from the boarder, yet far enough from humans

bajalou - 3-17-2005 at 02:03 PM

Good advice Bruce - wish more would give and follow it.

But you left out the murders & kidnappings and drug wars.... Oh my! Not to mention the ejidos seizn' your prop. whenever they feel like it

Neil... 'safe' in Alta Cal......

Packoderm - 3-17-2005 at 03:16 PM

I think prices for lots in the area south of Puertocitos to Gonzaga will explode after the road is paved. Maybe now is the time to think about purchasing?

Dave - 3-17-2005 at 03:27 PM

Panama is nice.;D

Skeet/Loreto - 3-17-2005 at 06:23 PM

Try La Ventana a few miles South of La Paz.

That was good one, Bruce!

Bruce,

Mulege is heaven compared to Loreto, we have been here for 2 years now, and wish we had retired to New York. My dogs have been shot, and my boat was last seen being stolen by drug addicts from Loreto Bay. Tijuana is the place to be.

Bruce R Leech - 3-17-2005 at 08:21 PM

yea this whole central aria is a bad choice for any one looking to settle down.

Bruce, Don't forget about...

Mexray - 3-17-2005 at 08:45 PM

the west Nile virus from all the mos-key-tos in the river near town. The scorpions in your sandals. The rattlesnakes hiding in the shade of your pickup truck. The no-see-em's that flock to all the beaches each day! Mulege can be a haven for pestilence!...

Let's see, what did we leave out: killer bees, man-eating creatures of the deep, jelly fish, and of course, the worst, our fellow man, himself...:O

The Future!

Postman, you have to ignore the peanut gallery sometimes... However, if you are serious you cannot expect anything to be what you see today, in 7-10 years.

For example, south of La Paz there may be a large PANDA zoo (near San Bartolo) in ten years... It seems that some gringo (who hated his own kind, and prefered to live among the locals) convinced the locals to give up what they were doing (making candy, cheese, leather goods) to grow BAMBOO!

Well, the bamboo grew so quickly it overtook all the grazing land the cattle and goats once fed upon...

The local government had no idea how to restore the once natural landscape to its original state...:?:

The United Nations was called in... they insisted the land once happily farmed and grazed upon by the small town's people and their flocks MUST be taken away from them, as the U.N. had a better plan!:fire:

With the people removed, Chinese Giant Pandas were brought in to feed on the bamboo:O The town, now is made up of Chinese support personal and their families, is renamed 'San Panda'.

The first panda born in Baja (in 2016) was named 'Junior', but the Mexican visitors who come to the panda zoo prefer to call him J.R. ???:?: It seems only the locals (who had to relocate to El Centenario inside walled encaves) know why.:lol::lol:

Bubble?

rogerj1 - 3-17-2005 at 10:16 PM

Look out if California real estate takes a tumble, all that line of credit money to buy Baja real estate goes bye, bye.

Does junior smuggle all the plants into Baja or does he just "Pay off" the officials?

Look up "Cortez"

jrbaja - 3-22-2005 at 03:38 PM

Cincodemayo - 3-22-2005 at 03:41 PM

elizabeth - 3-22-2005 at 04:03 PM

Bruce-
You forgot to mention the great white sharks that hang out between Mulege and Santa Rosalia....

tranquillo

comitan - 3-22-2005 at 04:04 PM

For awhile there I thought we had a forum where people had questions and there was a lot of members who had helpful answers. Now wer'e in the pits again the VIPER pits. Can't we go back to where we were the last few days. You can be recognized by being nice and helpfull without stricking out like a Viper every time someone gets to close.

yankeeirishman - 3-22-2005 at 04:21 PM

Ay! Dont be alarmed ol boy! Did I have the land sharks attack me at times. But the Doves always fly in again. Don't worry...it's like a big family here. Not Brady Bunch...but close :lol::lol::lol:

to the "humans" in greater Aztlan.... disease, enslavement, and genocide spring to mind. All in all, I bet they could have foregone the bamboo!!
