Just 43 seconds... poor Alek has to protect the food he is making for the Trail of Missions guests!

Helicopters are great for emergencies
and the Rich and Famous

Not so wonderful for those of us on the ground subjected to the terrible cyclones of trash, grit and crud that get generated.

Shame on him for landing right there close to other people trying to go about their own business
Very selfish to aggressively invade others' space

willardguy - 7-4-2019 at 10:18 AM

my what an extraordinary clip!

David K - 7-4-2019 at 10:19 AM

Dick... He was part of the tour with the tv camera mounted and others onboard. He gets to eat, too. That lot is the only place to land and he has done it before.

The meat on the bbq was seasoned with sand, dog feces, and whatever else was blowing in the wind  yum!

Idea for tour operator: Move the bbq or find somewhere else in town to land :light:

You can bet that Alek covered it all. He is an awesome chef.

I think the point here is that one guy is a good cook.....and the helo pilot is selfish and/or inconsiderate of others.....and could find another place to land.....doing such a landing repeatedly is not a really good defense/justification.

willardguy - 7-4-2019 at 11:00 AM

now you know why the desert assassins wear their caps over their ears!

SFandH - 7-4-2019 at 11:10 AM

It's not a big deal to me, but I'm wondering, is just pulling up to the barbeque in your helicopter legal? Land anywhere you want?

David K - 7-4-2019 at 01:21 PM

Well, it was all pre arranged where the copter would land, so it wasn't a surprise or selfishness. Jim will not put down the copter where he or security can't see it, either.

When I get my helicopter...

Bajazly - 7-4-2019 at 01:50 PM

Maybe find a place that is more suitable and don't be a dick, seeing how this isn't the first time, and post a security guy there. At 7K per truck it's not like money is a big deal.

fishbuck - 7-4-2019 at 01:50 PM

How about making a helipad?

Pre-arranged so Helo Jim could keep an eye on his bird....

Hmmmm....lots of open fields in El Rosario within a block or two from the main esquina.....

So many flights in Baja and this is the best he can come up with?

But those guys with their ears tucked into their flat-beaked gangsta caps love it.....more of that desert assassin mentality...

thebajarunner - 7-4-2019 at 02:00 PM

Watch the background in the video, that downwash created pure havoc on the ground (as if a chopper jockey cares)

Only once did I make the mistake of being close to a landing chopper, and I picked grit and "stuff" out of my hair and teeth for days.

Once was enough
Land the damn thing off somewhere that does not impact those on the ground, especially an outdoor cooking setup.

As if that were the only level place in El Rosario to land......

Lee - 7-4-2019 at 02:26 PM

Looks fine to me. Since it was pre-arranged, that's where they wanted him to land. This is Mexico.

Well, the only people that got sandblasted and got dirt/feces in their dinner were the redneck guests/staff of the knuckle-dragging tour the helicopter was part of, so all was karmic goodness!

Hey, it’s 4th of July, so let’s talk about trump’s taxpayer funded re-election rally currently sullying the mall and Lincoln memorial — I hear it will have helicopter gun ships the likes of which have never been seen in el Rosario! And sparklers! And big tanks! And massive weapons! And protesters!

David K - 7-5-2019 at 01:52 PM

He landed there many other times going back to the first Trail of Missions in 2014 when he fetched a new spindle for one of the Raptors broken near Punta Baja/Punta San Antonio. The parts truck was at Baja Cactus still.

fishbuck - 7-5-2019 at 01:53 PM

Very cool. Jim is the man!

fishbuck - 7-5-2019 at 01:58 PM

My concern would be rotor blade abrasion.
Bu if Jim isnt worried then neither am I.;)

Just ask Billionaire Chris Cline how cool it is to zip across from the Bahamas.

Or Not ?

One never knows how soon they may go boom.

Trail of Missions is the tour hosted by Cameron Steele and the "Desert Assasins" (as he calls his off-road racing fans). The idea was to have a tour for wives and children to enjoy along with the men who are the ones who typically do the motorcycle tours Cameron has hosted for a few years now (and are on TV, too): Rip to Cabo, Baja Beach Bash, etc. Trail of Missions was designed to combine history with off-road adventure, to share that Baja has more than just dirt roads and beautiful beaches to enjoy.

The first Trail of Missions tour was in 2014 and while Cameron was researching for that tour is when he contacted me the first time as he learned I was the "mission guy" from a mutual friend, Kevin Ward (Dust to Glory film producer). Cameron had me join the first tour for the three days that he had the helicopter along. Jim McCoy is the helicopter owner/pilot who has been hired by Score and various off-road racing teams for photography/ filming shots. I lectured at the two mission sites the group visited when I was with them, and got on a minute or two of the TV show (CBS Sports that year) made from the tour.

I flew with Jim from El Cajon to San Vicente, where I got into Cameron's Raptor and two guys from the TV film crew got into the helicopter. On the third day, when the copter was ready to head back from Mission San Fernando to El Cajon, I got back into it. The tour continued on, ending at Cabo San Lucas. Cameron has hired me to design trips after that and for this year, hired me to come along on the 6-day recon trip to guide them to new sites so the tour/show could have different places to see for 2019.

I posted a full report with a ton of photos taken from in the helicopter over Baja as well as from inside the three vehicles I rode in, June 2014: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=74324

Here is my trip report for the recon trip, last May: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=92768

Enough about Jim McCoy.....let's read more about David and his accomplishments.....hanging with the Big boys...

willardguy - 7-8-2019 at 11:30 AM

im thinking the boyz with the flatbills over their ears might be easily buffaloed?;)

David K - 7-8-2019 at 11:42 AM

I thought a few here on Nomad may like seeing a helicopter land next to Baja Cactus, that's all. Just sharing what I saw on Facebook about a place many Nomads have stayed at or admire for the help Antonio provides all who need it.

How about posting some of your own stuff and see if anyone likes it? Ignore mine if it isn't your thing. :light:

Anyone needing a knowledgeable guide who knows Baja and has an extensive lifetime of experience exploring the Baja peninsula would be hard pressed to find a more capable person than David. As many on this forum can confirm, there is no one who provides more helpful advise to new Baja travelers wanting to enjoy the Baja experience.
Keep up the good work David. The vast number of us on this forum who have had the benefit of your experience appreciate it. And yes, the maps are also very helpful.

Well said!!

No one brings the wealth of info and detail to the forum that DK provides.
We occasionally have our little differences, but by and large David is the best thing that ever happened to Doug's little family gathering.
I also appreciate the great photos that StuckSucks pops up with when the brain dead posters try to impose junk on our board.
Right on guys!!
