That is wonderful! Do you have a mailing list so that it comes automatically as events are added or once a week?

Thanks all. I added a subscription option on the right sidebar. Not sure if it will recognize the events getting added but give it a try.

heroica is a title granted to cities by the pres if the city had a significant battle that was favorable for mexico.
i think there was some battle in mulege during the mex-america war.

HeyMulegeScott - 5-19-2020 at 09:42 AM

Yep. The official name of the town not to be confused with the municipality of Mulegé.

Very interesting.

Thank goodness Captain Manuel Pineda and his men won as I would hate to think that Baja would be part of the United States ...

That would just F*UCK up everything !!!

David K - 5-19-2020 at 12:46 PM

Yes, a historic town indeed... the 4th California mission (founded in 1705) is there, too. Thanks for the replies... I just don't remember seeing that addition to the name painted on the entrance when I was last there??

I did an article of the American occupation of Baja California, including the battle at Mulegé: https://www.bajabound.com/bajaadventures/bajatravel/occupati...

That battle, which was more of a stand-off, did not determine if Baja remained part of the U.S. (we had already occupied La Paz, with our flag flying there and at San José del Cabo, too). It was during the negotiations after Mexico surrendered when the issue came up that an American "finger" dangling in front of the Mexican mainland was "demoralizing" and since our interests was San Francisco Bay and Alta California primarily, giving back the peninsula and sufficient dry land to connect it with the mainland was not seen as too big a deal to the American negotiators.

While having Baja remain undeveloped and pristine was enjoyable for many of us Nomads, the Mexicans who lived there after the war continued to feel neglected by Mexico City for many decades... and only getting "one little highway" down the peninsula, at the end of 1973.

This surprises me. What's your source on how they felt?

Seeking an independent Republic of Baja California is one... There is more than one Facebook group in Mexico seeking it, maybe in jest, but still:
https://www.facebook.com/nuevarepublicadebajacalifornia/
https://www.facebook.com/bajaindependiente/
https://www.facebook.com/SeparatismoBajacaliforniano/

My other source is a lifetime of reading history of and my travels in Baja California. Can you tell me that the federal highways in Baja are treated the same as those on the mainland? Baja is so different from the mainland and it receives so little attention from D.F. that if not for the prosperity it gets from its neighbor, it would be in pretty sad shape. Maybe that has changed a lot in the last dozen years?

Oh, back to the original subject of the addition to the name of Mulegé...

I looked at a video made by my passenger in 2016, and sure enough...

HeyMulegeScott - 5-19-2020 at 05:34 PM

What town would look like if the Americans won.:D

mtnpop - 5-20-2020 at 08:35 PM

In talking with friends in Mulege the town is pretty much shut down, they are not anxious for visitors at this time trying to keep the Covid away...
No beer in stores as of today, mini brewery has his.... food is mostly take out.
We have a home there that we were going to head for in late April an pretty much asked to not do so....
Also there is a facebook group "mulegenews" that is pretty active with the folks that are there.
They are also saying beaches are still closed not supposed to be anyone renting to travelers...
although I would guess it is happening anyway..

Just what I am being told earlier today from neighbors...

Just what I am being told from neighbors...

mtnpop - That sounds accurate. When it's back open and safe to travel I hope everyone will consider a visit to this special place.

If my old memory serves me correctly (not often) I believe Nomad "Howard" wrote about the battle of Mulege many years ago on this forum and Pompano wrote about a painting in Ruebens Farmacia that illustrates the battle.

Man I could use a good Pompano story right now, along with a few drinks. The drinks are easier to get.

take care all.
