Hwy 5 from S.F. to Hwy 1 as far as Los Cabos

RFClark - 11-8-2020 at 11:44 AM

Hi all,

We just drove from just south of San Felipe to Todos Santos and Los Cabos with an overnight in Mulege.

The road is generally in excellent shape. The worst stretch is about 20K between the LA Bay turnoff and Jesus y Maria. The lowest bidder repaved the road and large patches are coming off.

They are widening the bridge just before the San Ignacio APO expect 20 min delays.

There are 2 detours south of Santa Rosella both are reasonably short.

There are 2 detours south of Loreto including extending the 4 lane Hwy up the 1st hill south of town. There were no delays there.

There is a final spot about 40Km prior to La Paz where they are doing construction north of the Hwy.

The bypass around La Paz is finally marked except for the RT at Home Depot.

No road problems south of La Paz noted, we went through Todos Santos though.

As to the much discussed Sanitary Checkpoints. There were none. Even the dreaded military checkpoint at San Ignacio was a nonevent! La Paz has a Federal Police checkpoint before and after La Paz but Gringos are waved through.

Gas was plentiful at all stops! Pay in Pesos. Stations south are giving $18.80/Dollar the exchange rate was $20.20!

Most establishments in Baja Sur require face masks, hand washing/Disinfecting and temperature checks.

We saw lots of tourists (Scorpion Bay is reported to be packed, Todos Santos was packed) but unlike up north, no folks with torches and pitchforks!

The road had the usual trucks, goats and cattle on it, but no banditos or brujas were noted though we only drove until 19:00! The total drive time was about 14 hours!

Most hotels and restaurants are open. We ate outdoors, the weather was great as always!

Given a choice of spending a “Dark Winter” in the People’s Republic waiting for the “Comité De Salut” to visit us and Sunny Baja Sur, the choice is none at all!

Thank you for an excellent report.

Great to hear. Have fun.

Crazy quiet downn here. Pretty empty except (as said) San Juanico had lots of old long boarders. We did Comundu to San Javier and didn´t see anyone . That was a first for San Javier! Loreto we stayed at Hotel Angra with 1 other room occupied by late arriving nationals.Same with Agua Verde, we had it all to ourselves for the 4 days there. Tomorrow off to San Evaristo from CC. Truly a year to remember.

I drove that road in late January B.C. (before covid) and it was deserted then!

There were tire tracks, apparently from ranch traffic at both ends of the road, but mid way across there were nothing but animal tracks and one solo bicycle track. I'll bet that person was lonely!

Same for me in 2017... Nothing between the San Javier paved road and El Horno or Comondú... except for an American bike rider!

It was the fact that we were the only people at the Mission that was a suprize. Last time I was there it was swarming with tourists.

I have not been here for awhile and I have a question. Is there any place on this site that has an accurate mileage and distance chart for Mex. 5 from Mexicali to the Mex. 1 intersection? A reference would be appreciated if one exists. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

wild ass guess

based on driving it in October - 250 miles of smiles

From the sign in Mexicali that says San Felipe 186 Km to the junction is about 456KM next gas south is 98Km at Jesus y Maria. None of the maps have been updated more accurate than that it’s 169 Km from the Puertacitos turnoff!

RFClark - 11-26-2020 at 06:25 PM

Or 247Km from the San Felipe Airport turnoff!

Km. 0 Mexicali is 5 miles south of the border.

Km. 191 is the traffic circle in San Felipe (where you turn right to go south).

Km. 0 is 10 kms south of San Felipe, where you turn left off of the airport road.

Km. 201.5 is where Hwy. 5 ends at Hwy. 1 (Laguna Chapala). Three extra kilometers were inserted into the markers after Km. 167 (south of Gonzaga Bay)... in other words, Km. 168 became marker Km. 171!

So, 191 kms. + 10 kms. + 198.5 kms. = 399.5 kms. or 247.7 miles + 5 miles from the border = 257.7 miles from border to Hwy. 1.

David,

You’re correct. It’s 201Km from the APO turnoff! My Bad math!

The kilometer marker near Hwy. 1 is 201, but remember they altered the figure by adding three "mystery" kilometers south of Km. 167, so it is really should read Km. 198 ! LOL Oh, Mexico!

Marinero - 11-28-2020 at 06:25 AM

Thanks for the feedback, Nomads

David K - 11-28-2020 at 08:17 AM

Remember Nomads, that on the Road Conditions forum, I have a post of all the kilometer markers http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=81948

and have also posted a look at three parts of the future Baja Bound Road Guide, including Mexicali to Laguna Chapala (Hwy. 5 + side trips): http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=95028

Here also is Part 3 (San Quintín to Guerrero Negro +): http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=91898

and Part 4 (Guerrero Negro to San Ignacio +): http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=92377

These are my pre-publication creations from 2018. The actual published guide could look different and it will have the latest updates, such as the completed Highway 5.

That is what Baja Nomad should be about, helping others who love the peninsula, I think...
