Motorcycle accident 2 20 2021

BajaBlanca - 2-21-2021 at 09:53 PM

There was a very bad accident between TJ and Mexicali and they are asking if anyone recognizes this man. He was taken to Mexicali hospital. I saw this on facebook and am sharing but I do not have any more details.

Looks like the bike was stolen sometime prior to Feb 2018

motoged - 2-21-2021 at 10:38 PM

Hmmmm, wonder whose bike it was. I was thinking license plate might help identify the guy.....and then saw plate dates.

As an aside, the first time I met Blanca and Les was at the hotel in Catavina....and they had just come across a MC accident south of there where an American riding solo died.

They were visibly shaken by the experience..... hopefully, Blanca, this is the last one you experience.

Not a fan of street bikes. So dangerous.

motoged - 2-22-2021 at 12:18 AM

Not so much if you are a skilled rider. Even riding in circles on a beach has its inherent risks.

Not near the same risks. Skill does nothing for you when big metal objects outside your control are buzzing around you. Don't try to fool yourself otherwise just because you've been lucky so far.

I'd never ride a street bike or ever encourage my kids to do so. Do everything possible to discourage it. Just a really bad idea other than short trips here and there in light traffic areas.

motoged - 2-22-2021 at 01:29 AM

Street: Over 300,00 miles and 45 years... only injury was one pavement rash on elbow one time.

Dirt: About 40,000 miles in 20 years: One broken fibula, one foot fracture, three serious sternum injuries, two concussions, wrist injuries, torn elbow ligament, tailbone injury that took 4 years to heal.....all aggravating most joints with arthritis.

Tell me again what is dangerous.

JZ - 2-22-2021 at 04:17 AM

Sounds like you suck at riding in the dirt. Got my 1st dirt bike at 11, and the worst is getting the wind knocked out of me. Was too busy having fun to count the miles.

Stay off the pavement. You don't want your luck to run out.

pacificobob - 2-22-2021 at 07:29 AM

if you don't get bucked off once in a while, you're not riding hard enough jiz!
55 years on the street...not out of luck yet. even longer dirt riding.
forgive me if if ignore your sage counsel. btw isn't shunning street riding due to perceived danger seems equivalent to basement hiding due to pandemic fears you often mention.

With age, comes a cage was my approach. Still ride a horse though which is no smarter than a gopher (similar brains for both)

pacificobob - 2-22-2021 at 07:42 AM

I'll quit riding when I'm too weak to pick my motorbikes up after a fall.
so many folks just can't wait to be old.

willardguy - 2-22-2021 at 08:46 AM

then again I think you owe Buck a debt of gratitude, thats one less knucklehead on the road;)

Ya? Well, you suck at spelling and grammar

Have you ever sustained an injury resulting from your phenomenal career in riding? If you ride like you spell and construct a sentence, I don't think you have much to teach me.

Indeed, it looks like he is Mexican and an engineer. His family is with him.

I sure hope he pulls through!

Not all riding is alike...

Riders, we all live in different places, ride different places, and have our own individual experiences. I know Motoged (full disclosure), have ridden with him, travelled and rode the peninsula with him. His injuries are real and are directly related to the terrain he choses to ride. Some people just ride roads, which is great but lets try to keep perspective.
The ratio of road miles to off-road miles, relating to injuries, should give an idea of ability...lots of "other stuff" on a roadway. Off road riding has its own difficulties. I don't know you JZ but all i have seen is gravel road shots and "hey look at what i've got" pics. I am glad you haven't had any injuries doing this though....

yeah but in his defense once he's on the beach its WFO!

TMW - 2-22-2021 at 02:58 PM

I've only ridden a little on the streets. Actually I've ridden my dirt bike on the highway more during a SCORE race. Don't like it much. I've seen some pretty bad MC/car crashes, usually car turns in front of MC. I've had enough scary moments riding my bicycle on the street, too many stupid drivers. Last time I rode on the street I almost got run over by a dump truck and we were looking straight at each other.

advrider - 2-22-2021 at 08:57 PM

All of my broken bones have been as a x-BMX racer or moto racing, never at the level of making money! If you push yourself in the dirt you will get hurt or killed at race speeds. I still ride the street but have come closer to dyeing from others on their phones or bad driving but I chose to live as I do!
I've come close to hitting cars on dirt roads in Baja several times but most would have been my own fault. If my ticket gets punched tomorrow on the street or dirt it was nice meeting some of you and talking with everyone.

surabi - 2-22-2021 at 10:30 PM

Sure didn't take long for you guys to make a post about identifying an injured man all about you.

in fact i feel about riding as jiz feels about traveling during a pandemic....the obvious difference is i won't be endangering anyone but myself.

I agree a bit. But if I recall there was some research where CHP bike cops actually had fewer deaths per zillion miles than cops riding in squad cars. It was attributed to good training. If you've not had good on-the-road bike training, you really should consider it. It is literally your hide. Though I have ridden all my life, I took a safety course at maybe age 65. I was amazed at how much I didn't know. It was well worth the $300. What's a good bike wreck cost in bodily damage and bike damage? It's a bargain.

mtgoat666 - 2-27-2021 at 01:45 PM

How about them lane splitters?
Last week some dufus doing 40 in between lanes in stopped traffic went road ragey on me because I changed lanes w/o seeing him. Verbal diarrhea, but too wimpy to use his fists.
Only dead bodies I have seen on hwy in past few years were lane splitters.
Lane splitters deserve the maimings they receive :P

pacificobob - 2-27-2021 at 02:52 PM

the guys you see splitting lanes iat the speed of heat on liter sport bikes in socal have me fearful for them.. not that I've never indulged... but with massive caution and acute awareness of the risk.

Have see this forever in LA. But back in the early 00's witness it around Paris. Makes LA look like child's play.

What an idiotic response! Lane splitters deserve the maimings they receive? Seriously? In California it is perfectly legal to split lanes. Within speed limits of course. Your answer is asinine.

Yeah, but many (certainly not most) are quite careless. If the speed limit is 65 and traffic is at 2, only an idiot lane splits doing 65.

I think as a life long bike rider I tune in to sheer stupidity of some of the bikers. And it truly makes me anxious when they blast by at huge rates of speed. Really, I just don't want to be first on the scene to have to try to save them with my unconfident first aid skills (yes, I've had the training).

But then I remember being young and ignoring the odds too. The thrill of really letting it rip.

Skipjack Joe - 3-20-2021 at 09:32 AM

Hope he wore a helmet. Head injuries are the worst.

i often think of not wanting to witness anymore broken, damaged bodies. one never forgets the visual images...it comes with a cost.

Doug/Vamonos - 3-20-2021 at 10:21 AM

I agree doing it at high speed is stupid. I haven't researched lately but I recall the max speed is 45mph and not more than 15mph above the speed of traffic. Translated, that means you can split traffic that is moving at 30mph or less and not exceed 45mph in the process. Is it safe? The rider has to be absolutely on their game. I've ridden very fast sport bikes all my life. And split lanes all that time. I've had close calls but I can usually spot the unaware drivers before they get too close to me. In my experience, the only safe car or truck is the one that is in my rear view mirror, so lane splitting puts them behind me, which is where I want them. But if you are on something other than a sportbike, i.e. a big harley with ape hangers, then no it's not safe IMO because they are so wide, heavy, slow to respond, and usually occupied by riders who not only are not on their game, but they don't really have any game at all. JMO.

motoged - 3-20-2021 at 10:33 AM

Now that we have all that sorted out.....I wonder how the guy who had this crash is doing.

advrider - 3-21-2021 at 12:59 PM

I do it but not very often, just to many people change lanes without looking. Many are drifting in and out of lanes because they are on their phones when traffic is slow. Most often I do it at stop lights and scoot to the front to avoid being hit while stopped behind a car.
Last week I had three guys pass me on the right, over the fog line at near triple speeds on a two lane road, I was doing 65? Young and dumb will catch up with them at some point.

motoged - 3-21-2021 at 01:07 PM

I am not a fan of lane-splitting.....don't need to do it in my area, and think it is too risky in more congested locales.

But I anticipate drivers around me and always assume they don't see me. Getting ahead of traffic in town and on the highways makes sense to me....and watching out at stop signs and traffic lights for the vehicle behind me is good practice.

Riding motos has made me a better cage driver. :light:

dravnx - 3-22-2021 at 08:20 AM

I only started riding in 2013 but I've logged over 170,000 mi. since then. I've had 3 injuries. 2 on the street and one in the dirt. None were the fault of anyone else. I'm an avid lane splitter as I commute by bike 3-5 days a week in 60 mi. round trip in heavy traffic. Like anything else, there are techniques that allow you to lane share safely and effectively.
The CHP published guidelines but there are no vehicle codes specifying speeds. Yes, there are idiots who take unnecessary risks but more then likely, if it wasn't lane sharing, it would be something else.
It's always amazing to me that folks who have never done it have such passionate negative feelings about lane splitting.

pacificobob - 3-22-2021 at 11:01 AM

dang dravnx, that's a bunch of riding. they say there is no zealot like a convert.
what kind of motorbike to you ride? i too wonder why lane splitting gets folks who dont do it upset. i would wager most mishaps only injure the guy on the moto. cheers

Doug/Vamonos - 3-22-2021 at 03:06 PM

In defense of auto drivers, I suspect some don't like it because they are:
1. Jealous the bike is getting in front of them.
2. Just got scared sh*tless when the bike raced past them and they didn't expect or see it coming.
3. Got an earful of loud exhaust.
4. Had their side mirror hit or knocked off.
5. Just don't like motorcyclists.
6. Are haters of most everything.

pacificobob - 3-22-2021 at 04:18 PM

and the automobile drivers are quite certain that the riders are having a lot more fun.

dravnx - 3-24-2021 at 08:42 AM

I'm on my second Suzuki DL650. Put 110,000 on the first and have around 10,000 on the one I bought last spring. It's been a slow riding year. I also have a 2015 FJR1300 with 50,000 mi.
Doug pretty much nailed it.
