Montevideo cave paintings, is the road open? The mission closest to Catavina is the road open? Is it hard to find?

A locked gate blocks the way to Montevideo. Daggett's may have a key. The gate was installed to stop cattle thrives by the ranch beyond the painted cliff.

Oh, sorry... Daggett's is a beach campo with cabins at Bahía de Los Angeles, on the road to La Gringa, north of town.

Doesn't the caretaker family at San Borja mission take visitors to Montevideo? You can see the pictographs near Catavina/Santa Ines. There is a sign on the road. A short hike.

José at San Borja lives alone, his children are grown and gone. His wife (Analisia) left him around 2017. Sadly, he has shown some extreme hostile interactions and delusions to some groups (and none to others).

Sad to hear. I hope he's keeping up the property - a lot for one person. I hope his neighbors look after him. He must be getting old too.

In 2017, at my last visit (Feb), his brother had just arrived (wife already left) to help him build a cantina with satellite TV. This is what José told me then. Obviously, that dream evaporated.

One of his sons works for INAH out of Mexicali. One of his daughters married the owner of the ranch past the Montevideo painted cliffs. The same ranch that installed the locked gate to stop cattle theft. Both of José's children (mentioned here) are on Facebook but rarely post. I had reached out to the daughter to see if people could request to have the gate unlocked.

I might drop by on my Feb/Mar. trip. I'll bring some photos of his family that I've taken in past years. Maybe he'll let me camp there. Thanks for the news.

There are painted caves and cliff petroglyphs ALL OVER Baja.
