RFK Jr. and Guerrero Negro & Punta Abreojos

While doing a Google search for Baja lighthouse photos, I came across this link from an article posted just five days ago. It is actually old news, I think, but being a new article [that surprisingly didn't have an appearance here on Nomad], I thought it may inspire conversation.

More to the point of this article, I was on track to log 30 consecutive years of journeys throughout Baja California in Mexico with family and friends. This led to research and interviews with advocates, scientists, politicians, environmentalists and ordinary Mexicans steeped in the fabled leviathan, culminating in an award-winning series.

But what I witnessed of RFK Jr.—or "Bobby"—in Baja during a struggle over the fate of Mexico's charming gray whales was alarming.

It was all based on lies. The whales were in no danger from salt.

The endangered were actually those who resided in the threadbare Mexican village of Punta Abreojos. As recounted by our journalist, Susan Goldsmith, this is the scope of that village—at the end of a 37-mile dirt road, there is one phone in the tiny community. When it rings, the person who answers it leans out of the door and yells there is a call for so-and-so.

Robert Kennedy Jr. and the NRDC vigorously courted the villagers' support. Kennedy reportedly dove for abalone with the locals. And the villagers were promised "green" jobs to replace the salt plant jobs they were about to lose.

Kennedy and NRDC hatched a scheme to vastly expand the villages' modest harvesting of an oyster hatchery. But neither Kennedy nor the honchos at NRDC are watermen ... unless you count yachting. Someone thought the new oyster operation should have solar/wind-generated power. And probably there would be excess power for the community of Punta Abreojos.

What an odd article.

There is no ONE phone since everyone has a cell phone nowadays. Even when we arrived in the scene 16 years ago, there were many landlines in both Abre and La Bocana.

I believe the salt mine was going to be in the Laguna de San Ignacio which is where the whales are as well, not Abre.

Residents of Punta Abreojos are quite wealthy and can afford to send their kids to college, just like those in La Bocana. The kids parent's in my college scholarship program were not the local cooperative members but the bricklayers, painters etc.

Very strange article indeed.

So, in 2001 Abreojos had one telephone? The author clearly has some kind of personal vendetta against towards RFK Jr. in particular or against "political dynasties" in general.

Such a tragedy that Mitsubishi did not swoop in and save the poor backward Mexicans with 200 well-paying jobs. The industrialization / destruction of their pristine desert environment for offshore corporate profits would have been good for them. (Sarcasm)

For those that don't know about Mitsubishi's failed (halted) plans to build the largest salt works in the world at Laguna San Ignacio, here's an article published in 2000 written by the International Fund for Animal Welfare.

never understood the logic of expanding salt production to san ignacio lagoon when there is plenty of low elevation flat land for expansion adjacent to existing GN salt facility.

This is what the fishing coops in Abreojos were afraid of. The pier as planned would have gone thru some of their abalone and lobster fishing grounds.

I’m not a RFK guy but that is a political hit piece.

I’m not sure the area would have been better with a salt mine

And I know at least up in La Bocana they farm oysters and have shown great restraint in waiting for the abalone to recover from a red tide several years ago.

And of course there is now more than one phone in Punta Abreojos
