Next year’s eclipse is total when viewed from Mazatlán

The blue line is the exact center of the eclipse in April

AKgringo - 10-14-2023 at 07:19 PM

It was too cloudy where I am in Nevada county to see much, but I got a pretty good view for about 15 minutes. The clouds thinned out just enough that I could see about an 85% oclusion, and didn't need an ultra-dark lense to view it.

RFClark - 10-14-2023 at 11:14 PM

We have a AB&B booked in Mazatlán for the April eclipse.

boe4fun - 10-15-2023 at 08:49 AM

We had a Bloody Mary party out at Shari’s La Bufadora Inn in Bahía Asunción yesterday. Great viewing, great peeps, good times! We’re trying to plan our spring 2024 La Paz clinic so that we can drive south towards lands end and view the eclipse one morning (should be about 92-95% in this area).

My daughter lives in Albuquerque now and snapped this photo of the surreal shadows and rings of fire under the trees shining on her Baja greyhound rescues, Kirby and Lucky Boy.

That is so cool!

AKgringo - 10-15-2023 at 07:21 PM

I witnessed a similar effect a couple of years ago during an eclipse over NorCal. Every beam of light filtered through the leaves on my oak tree was an image of the occluded sun.

Ateo - 10-15-2023 at 09:06 PM

I paddled out for a surf at Oceanside Harbor during the eclipse and caught a huge set wave right when I entered the lineup. It was glorious. I looked up thru the deep layer of gray cloudy sky and saw the eclipse. Many others had no idea what was even going on above them. Cool moment.

thebajarunner - 10-16-2023 at 03:38 PM

Just got home from a 440 mile sprint back from Albuquerque

My first eclipse was the great event in Baja Sur 1991
My high school daughter and I drove down to KM 100 and watched that one. It was the best ever!! 3500 miles round trip

This one in New Mexico was "annular" so the world stayed pretty bright.
The so called "Ring of Fire" is still an amazing thing to see.

We are already booked into San Antonio for the one next April

A real tradition in our family and it all started down at KM 100, north of La Paz.

Speaking of 1991...
On VivaBaja.com I have a webpage to show the photos from 'M' of when she and our very own 'Graham' was there: https://vivabaja.com/eclipse/

Mazatlan has only a 45 percent probability of clear skies. Most of texas has about 60 percent probability of clear skies.

Keep your options open. Evaluate the weather the week before the event, and choose your viewing spot based on near term weather forecast.

The very tired steeker on my old Toyota truck, years later. We watched the eclipse on the East Cape before the beach sand was converted into people and hotels.

Yeah, had a stack of those way back
The BCS government decided that they would be overwhelmed with visitors so you were supposed to make reservations to drive down and they were going to check you in at the Eagle Monument.
So, we did all of that and of course when we got there it was totally unmanned.
Also, they expected gas to be scarce with all the drivers so they put gas tanker trailers, filled with gas, up on blocks along the highway. And, they too were unmanned when we drove by.
As a tourist attraction it was a bust, but as spectacle it was awesome.

Our viewing spot at KM 100 was suggested as the absolute best of the best locations for being on the centerline
There were probably 50 or 60 of us there, less than the gang at any decent turn on the 1000 race road.

What, and cancel their Airbnb booking that blocked the host's calendar for 6 months from anyone else booking, one week before their check-in date? The cancellation policy likely means the guest wouldn't get a refund, or only half their money back, not to mention it would be a jerky thing to do.

RFClark - 10-17-2023 at 11:07 AM

Goat,

Mazatlán (á not i) is a lot closer than TX!

StuckSucks - 10-17-2023 at 11:22 AM

Most the eclipse-viewers opted for Hawaii over Baja, I think part of the reason the eclipse tourists in Baja was a bust. But I had to laugh -- we had perfectly clear skies in BCS while Hawaii's eclipse was shrouded by clouds.

Clouds are the curse of eclipse

We had sensational clear skies back in BCS-1991

Last Saturday in tiny Moriarty NM we had crystal clear skies
My daughter drove 7 hours to Winnemucca and had yuck!
Luck of the draw I guess....

I encourage everyone to live up to the terms of the contracts they enter into. I also encourage all eclipse viewers to take advantage of all possible flexibility so they can get the clearest skies they can... and comply with your contractual obligations so Surabi is happy.

We were in Pasadena, CA Saturday for a wedding that night so we posted up on the back terrace of the hotel with extra glasses and anyone who walked by was offered a look. Had folks stop and take a gander and most of them had no idea. Some came back multiple times and went and tracked down friends and family. Also had some of the employees stop by. Maybe 45-50 different people all together. We told them about April 2024 and how different an experience a Total Solar Eclipse is from others.

In 1991 I had an offer from a customer in Kona to come over and go out on his 50' boat but opted for Baja. Two days before we were to head down my girlfriend broke her leg and I cancelled my plans to head south. Customer in Kona piloted many miles offshore and never saw anything.

Took me ten years but I finally saw my first Total Eclipse in 2001 in Zambia. When is was over all I could think about was how to do that again. 2006 was north coast of Egypt. 2017 Casper, WY. 2019 Pangue Observatory, Chile. We will be watching in April from Killeen, TX in a friends backyard. Weather permitting. 2027 we are booked for Luxor, Egypt.

The fact that those of us living in North America can drive to the one in April if we so choose is pretty cool. Next opportunity for that will be in 2044.

thebajarunner - 10-18-2023 at 10:13 AM

The 1991 Baja eclipse really inspired us
In August 2017 we drove up from Central Cal to camp out in the forest above John Day Oregon. (That was when I discovered the joys and advantages of "disbursed camping" since we were in the National Forest.)
Remembering that the Baja event was nearly 7 minutes (which is just about maximum for eclipses) the Oregon event was about 3 minutes. For those brief moments time just stands still and you get such a sense of peace and good.
Last Saturday the annular event was awesome, but totality is truly another world altogether.
Can't wait for next April in Texas,
Matt, maybe we can meet up down there or in Luxor in a few years and shoot up a few more rockets. (Private bit of history here folks)

BornFisher - 10-19-2023 at 03:11 PM

I got permission to hit the road to New Mexico so off I went. I was hoping for Chaco Canyon but the Navajo Nation was closing sites like Four Corners and Monument Valley so I watched the eclipse south west of Farmington on hwy 491. Wish I`d have gone to the monolith of Shiprock but I wanted center line. 9 eclipses for me now, 6 total, 3 annular. Baja and Africa were my favorites.

Ateo - 10-19-2023 at 09:25 PM

I’ll definitely be in the Mazatlan region for the 2024 show! Let’s hook up for mariscos everyone.

chippy - 10-20-2023 at 02:09 AM

I'll be in the mountains of Durango around el Salto. The 8th is still to close the absolute s#&t show that is semana santa y pascua in Mazatlán.

thebajarunner - 10-20-2023 at 10:19 AM

And do not forget.....
Luxor, Egypt August 2, 2027 (my birthday)

Egypt is so much like Baja that it is hard to describe
And Luxor is the real deal
On my all-time top 10 list!!
Gotta do it!!!

Make your plans early, and a sail up the Nile to Aswan is essential!

stillnbaja - 10-20-2023 at 10:38 AM

I'll be flying my Learjet to Nova Scotia.....

Quoth the wannabe

elgatoloco - 10-21-2023 at 11:38 AM

Ha! Me thinks you will have an easier time getting in and out with rockets in Texas as opposed to Egypt.............just sayin. :saint:

We have friends going there too. Also looked at the spot in Durango that will have totality the longest but the logistics for that were daunting. Instead we will camp our way thru the southwest.

We never crossed paths (in person) in Baja. Maybe we will on the Nile!
