Mulege and Bay of LA
Ive been doing summer fishing trips since around 1990. I just got back from a week plus trip recently. I was surprised to see the number of Mexican
Nationals enjoying what has traditionally been a U.S. traveler's thing. We spent time at Hotel Serenidad where we were our group was the only U.S.
drive-ins. There was one fly-in. Lots of people enjoying the hotel and pool by night and spending time in Conception Bay by day. The town of Mulege
was similar. For LA Bay, I would guess that the only 20% of the chartered pangas were U.S. filled. Don't get me wrong, it's great to see it.
The Roads: The Mex 5 from Mexicali was good. South of that, there were two sections of the 1 that are in pretty bad shape, particularly if you are
trailering a boat. No deal breakers though. Definitely some axel breakers if you don't slow it down. :-)
Mulege Fishing: Slow 15 miles from the coast. Dorado are scattered and small. Very few billfish seen. Very little life last week.
Bay of LA Fishing: Great. decent yellowtail off the bottom, plus grouper, pintos, a snapper. Tons of life. Two to four whale sharks in already.
Punta Chivato: This is where it all started from me, so we went to see what had become of it. Very sad. The old hotel was abandoned. The old beach
camp was still accessible. However, it was scrubbed of any of the amenities, such as they were. The new hotel, next to the mechanic, was open. Since
I last saw it, they have added a pool and a nice common gathering area. The gathering area seemed more like something you would find in a Costa Rica
Ecolodge rather than in Baja. They had a large kitchen for the restaurant. I think I recall they were asking for $2050 pesos a night. No guests were
there. I imagine they do better in the winter? I hope they make it. I'm not sure I understand their business model.
Prices for lodging seem to be up about 50% across the board.
Had an amazing dinner in San Felipe at La Vaquita Marina. This is not your taco joint, but more of a refined menu. It's awesome. They have a sister
location just off the main road, north of town. This location is great as well. It's more of a taco place and caters to the mega development across
the street.

last i saw they were grading flat lots all around the old hotel. looked like the old hotel was surrounded by bare land to provide source of blowing
dust and aesthetic sense of moonscape, lol. what's going on around the old hotel?
what is name of new hotel? they got a website?
