Woke!

They took the phone, ignored the money. Targeted hit, perhaps.
With a ditch and robbers approaching a stopped car it sounds like the Libre road rather than highway 1.

They were driving, driver was shot, passenger took the steering wheel, drove into a ditch. At 5:10 am. "One person lost his life and two others were
injured this Monday morning, when gunmen fired at a vehicle that was moving on the scenic road.
The aggression was registered at 05:10 hours, about kilometer 41 in the area known as Calafia, municipality of Rosarito.
The victims are US citizens and were traveling in a Honda-brand vehicle when they were hit by bullets, after the shocks requested to be taken to the
border line to be treated in the United States."

The free (Libre) road is Highway 1 (the toll road is 1-D).
The "Scenic Road" is the toll road, Mex 1-D.

they were coming home from a party and there must have been something pretty incriminating on that phone...fishy story for sure and not just a random
killing of tourists.
Another very bad story that will affect the already foundering tourism business.

I've driven that road at that time and it's dark. Equivalent to driving at night.
Don't drive at night or in the dark.

F*ck it.

Over the last decade, I have been struck by how many murder cases in Mexico have involved mistaken identity, or misunderstanding what a victim's
intentions had been. Mormon family gunned down because they were thought to be a rival cartel, innocent US tourist killed for the same reason,
innocent US tourist killed in Copper Canyon because his Spanish was too good, which made murderers feel he might be exploring the possibility of
moving into their area.
I don't have a feel for what the reason for this most recent attack was. I agree it seems a fishy story, like we are missing some of the facts.

Cupcake, read some more on the Mormon family, it's a crazy story. It sounds like they were more rivals, competing with the cartel on some level. Not
that it was ok at all.

It is quite a long and convoluted history, involving more than one Mormon family in that area of Mexico.
I know at least one family group did have some past bad dealings with cartel members. However, a relative of one of the victims in this most recent
massacre said their family group had never had any dealings with the cartels:
https://www.foxnews.com/world/la-mora-mormon-offshoot-mexico...
"Langford said their families have never had "even the slightest interactions with the drug cartel in the last 70 years" and that they are loved by
their community, serving the Mexican people."
