You have any reference about that change in law?
As far as I know, it would require a constitutional amendment, which it seems like we would have heard about...

americans can own land without a fidi if not within the resricted zone. I bought property in SMA 23 years ago before getting citizenship.

Bro, do a Google search instead of putting your head in the sand. This just happened majorly in Mexico City. I didn't say it happened where you
live.
I've owned property on the mainland for years and have many local MX friends. Yeah, no one is saying that in Sonora, yet.

probably is fake news that there's been some change in the law regarding this issue. (Foreigners have been able to hold title to
land outside of the protected zone for many years.)
As far as Baja is concerned, there are few places on the peninsula that fall over 50km from the coast (and few foreigners would want to buy there), so
in effect, it's all fideicomiso territory.
