Mother Teresa's Home for Terminally Ill Men, Women and Children Groundbreaking Saturday, April 30 in Rosarito

April 29, 2005

WHAT?

Groundbreaking for Mother Teresa's THE GIFT OF MARY home and the "Placing of the Stone" ceremony to begin construction on Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity refuge for homeless and terminally ill patients and the orphaned children they leave behind. On the site, a Roman Catholic mass will be celebrated followed by blessing of the corner stone, the building's first stone.

WHO?

The First Lady of Baja California, Maria Elena Blackaller de Elorduy

Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity Sisters

Noel Irwin Hentschel, of The Noel Foundation, has been working closely with The Missionaries of Charity, the First Lady of Baja, and the Secretariat of Tourism in Baja to secure THE GIFT OF MARY'S land from the Mexican government in Rosarito to build a home for homeless and terminally ill men, women and children who will be cared for by the Missionaries of Charity. Primary funding for this home is being provided by The Noel Foundation, which was founded in 1989 by Noel, who was inspired by working personally with Mother Teresa and her Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta. Noel is also assisting the Missionaries of Charity to expand their serving to the "poorest of the poor" in the state of California. The Noel Foundation is helping by establishing other rescue homes and missions throughout the state of California at the invitation of Catholic bishops in areas most in need.

The mother of seven, Noel lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Gordon. She is the co-founder and CEO of American Tours International and vice-chair of the United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board which advises the Secretary of Commerce on expanding tourism and jobs in America.

100 dignitaries and guests are expected for the mass and "blessing of the stone."

WHEN?

Saturday, April 30, 2005
12 Noon

WHERE?

Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico

DIRECTIONS:

THE GIFT OF MARY home site is in Lomas de Rosarito, Rosarito, Mexico. Drive South from Tijuana. You'll see a sign indicating you are entering Rosarito. Exit Ferriteria Cancun (or Madereria Cancun, they are the same exit). Go by a kindergarten school, continue by a park to Paraiso Oeste, which is the road that takes you up the hill to the GIFT OF MARY site. If for any reason this road is impassable, reverse direction on Paraiso Oeste and take a right turn onto Avenida Elena Ames. This road will also take you up to the home's construction site. Signs with many festive balloons along the way will help guide you to the historical groundbreaking.

I have visited Mother Teresa's "Home for the Dying" in both Port au Prince, Haiti and in Calcutta.
Both experiences were sad, sobering, yet uplifting.
We nearly got to meet her in Calcutta, she sent word down that she would have a few moments to talk with us, then at the last minute they said she was simply too tired to meet with visitors.
I always regretted not meeting, here, so close, yet so far away.
A wonderful, inspiring Christian servant... she is missed!
