Over the more than fifty years of loving Baja, I have always brought

my own supply of drinking and cooking water in my own water containers.

On a rare occasion, like once or twice at the most, I did fill up at a designated purified water store that most towns have.

I recall considering my own de-salt set up for the months at a time I was roughing it. It was never needed. Even the most out of the places had purified water close enough to be available. I have to believe purified water is more available than it never was.

There are water purifier units that you can just pour tap water into, which eliminates the need to look for garafons or bring drinking water with you. I got myself one of them, called a Berkey, a few years ago, for home use, and it's the best purchase I ever made for my Mexican home- I never have to deal with those heavy garafons again, nor buy smaller bottles of water, creating more plastic garbage.

Berkeys aren't cheap, but the filters, which use 2 per unit, and which account for about half the cost, are good for about 6,000 gallons before needing to be replaced, depending on how much bad stuff they have to filter out. And while they filter out 99.99% of pathogens, they don't filter out minerals, so it isn't "dead" water, like reverse osmosis is.

They also come in various sizes, from what they call a camping size to their "Big Berkey".
