Car rental in Baja
We need to rent a car for a couple of weeks around July 23. We will have our Class C and be heading to BOLA. We want to have something to get around
in and we don't tow. I assume it's best to rent in Baja instead of the States because of insurance. Is that true? If so, I'd like to rent as close
to BOLA as possible. Would that be Ensenada?
Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I see no one has answerd you as yet, so I'll chime in.......
No, no, and NO.....It would be very expencive to rent a car to take to Bahia.....I don't know where you are planing on camping, in your Class C. but,
there are "taxis" or better yet there are "Nomad's" I will be down at that time (Green 4Runner, Wa State plates) I'll be based at Camp
Gecko....and there will be several Nomad's around at the same time, no matter......just give a "high" sign to anyone passing and you will have the
ride you might need. It's okay "newbie" just ask.......

Thanks Debra,
You've given us cause to rethink the rental. Do we really need it?
But, we will be north of Daggett's on some land we are leasing. We will eventually put in a pad, perhaps more. So these two weeks are our first
chance to meet some more people, line up some helpers, learn more about available materials etc. And it's a little cumbersome to go in and out on the
washboard sand roads. In the future we will have a pickup along with us.
So - if we were to rent - any thoughts on where and how much $$$?

I can't give you a dollar amount for a rental car in Baja...having been a Travel Agent for 20yrs. (not for the last 5) I can tell you it will be very
expencive! If you will be at the north end I would recommend that when needed just ask your fellow campers if they are going into town, or, ask at
Dagget's or Raquel and Larry's to radio for a taxi. Last I checked a rental car was about $500 per week, plus ins., as I said, that was years ago.
U2U me with where you are camping and I'll and come for a visit and take you out on a spin around the area......I always love an excuse for a tour!

I have rented cars in Mexico, from the states and it's not that bad. For example, I just searched expedia.com, gave Tijuana as the pickup point, 10
days from 7/1/05 - Budget at $160/week for an economy car.
Next price for a compact (with A/C) was $294. So, maybe it's worth checking out if you would really like to have a car.

Roberto,? Does that include the $15 (or there abouts) ins.? per day? If so, that would be a deal. And as I understand it, "bowser" is driving a
MOTO and wanting to rent something to get around in Bahia.

I rented for a week in Loreto this past April and the weekly rate was not that expensive but the rates do not include the Mexican insurance. So, if
you want to rent in TJ, be sure to check the types of coverages and daily rates for them. For example, I rented with Hertz in Loreto and we got full
coverage on the vehicle which added another $200 plus to the total rental for a grand total of @$550 per week. The full coverage may seem expensive
but it was worth knowing that no matter what happened to the car, we had no deductible on a total loss, theft or other major damage if that had
occured. You can always get just liability coverage for the car but if anything happens you may have a high deductible so check carefully the
insurance areas.
For this trip, I also followed Murphy's law and paid the extra for full coverage and just 30 minutes outside of Loreto, Murphy gave me a powerful
reminder of why we took full coverage...we were just two cars behind a fatal accident on the highway that involved a Mexican family's van and we were
lucky to have been far enough behind to avoid adding to the wreckage. So I always say, most of the time all is smooth sailing but it's best to be
covered for the worst...Good luck with your car rental, post again if you need more details and most of all have a safe and wonderful trip!!

Well here's the scoop.
The least expensive car that Hertz has out of Ensenada is $270 per week. With persistence I finally found out from Hertz International Customer
Service that collision coverage would be another $140 per week. So figure $410 per week.
I think I'll consider other options.
