TIJUANA ? A young couple was detained Wednesday at the border by Mexican customs agents after a search of their minivan uncovered about $1 million in
bundled U.S. currency hidden inside the rear seats.

The two occupants of the Chrysler Town & Country minivan, which had California license plates, were turned over to federal authorities, who
planned to check with U.S. law enforcement officials to determine whether the minivan had been stolen in the United States.

The couple's van was pulled over as they entered Tijuana at the Otay Mesa border crossing. Within a few minutes, a search of the vehicle found the
bundles of cash, inside the seats.

Heavily armed federal police officers and Mexican army troops were called in to reinforce Mexican customs agents at the Otay Mesa border crossing.

How many times have they torn apart your car seats while entering Mexico? Sounds fishy.

I'm rushing to TJ to get my seat covers done.

Did anyone get the name of the shop who did the seats?

TIJUANA ? Mexican federal agents detained two people Wednesday ? including a U.S. citizen ? who entered Mexico without declaring more than a million
dollars.

?lvaro Gonz?lez Quintero, 22, of the United States and Alejandra Mart?nez Olmedo of Mexico were entering Mexico at the Otay Mesa border crossing,
which uses a random red-and-green-light inspection process.

Even though they got a red light, the two continued driving the 1997 Dodge minivan until Mexican federal agents and customs officials waiting nearby
pulled them over, according to a news release. The money was found inside the car seats and framework, according to the news release.

It wasn't clear where the money was coming from or where it was destined, according to the release. However, it's common for criminal groups to take
large quantities of money into Mexico for money laundering purposes, officials say.
