Mexico Authorities Patrolling Beaches After Report Of Attack
June 23, 2005
SAN JOSE DEL CABO, MEXICO -- Mexican naval authorities are patrolling the beaches along Baja California's southern tip after a shark bit a Colorado
man.
Officials say the man was surfing at San Luis beach Tuesday, about 12 miles north of San Jose del Cabo on the Gulf of California, when something bit
his foot.
The 34-year-old man shouted to his friends, who helped him out of the water.
Authorities say sharks have been seen in the region since April.
Municipal police stationed on the beach have begun warning visitors that sharks may be lurking in the area.
Since the attack, other local officials have begun monitoring the area and warning people to stay out of the water. Naval officials have also started
patrolling deeper waters just off the coast, searching for sharks.
Officials said they had no reports of sharks at the popular tourist beaches of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
However, authorities have warned people away from the beaches of San Luis, Santa Elena and Zacatitos, popular with residents of nearby areas as well
as tourists interested in adventure excursions and water sports.

Based on the newspaper report it sounds more likely that it was a triggerfish guarding a nest than a shark. It doesn't really describe the wound or
what the victim saw. These types of reports always crack me up, "....authorities patrolling the beach looking for sharks..." What a crock. Why is
it that every time I read something in the media that deals with something I know about (flying, diving, marine animals, earthquakes, structural
engineering) it is either incomplete, misleading, or grossly incorrect? Why doesn't the media have specialists on staff that actually know something
about these areas of interest, and why aren't the reporters required to talk to them before they print their misinformation. Just venting,

They have these same guys in Mulege. In fact they are quite successful too. MeNo cooked us up a good one a while back!
By the time this crap reaches the east coast, it will have been a 40' long great white with a volkswagon in it's gut!
Gotta love these modern day "reporters/distorters"!

El Jefe's link is a bit more informative. It kinda describes the wound, and it quotes some people who claim to have seen bull sharks in the area.
The scenario could have been a bull shark mistaking the guy's foot for a fish. While very rare in this area, these types of attacks do happen. I
still think it is irresponsible, however, to speculatively describe a possible bull shark attack in the article and show a picture of a great white in
the sidebar.

That should keep some people out of the water, until the surf gets really good. El Jefe have you started building yet? Are you still planning on using
the 3-D panel system? I have built 4 houses and 2 offices out of the panel and i really like the product its alittle more costly but I really like the
benefits.
