CABO MAGIC Sportfishing Team Summary 03-09 July 2005

ariel
85 charters provide for the following summary numbers for the period 03-09 July 2005

21 Striped Marlin

92 Yellowfin Tuna

15 Dorado

1 Wahoo

1 Red Snapper

1 Cabrilla

1 Roosterfish

1 Jack Crevalle

25 boats had no luck

This period is a good illustration how impossible it is to predict what conditions will be or what possible catch results might be for a given period, even when asked to consider the affects of moon phases, tides, and previous years of analyzed results. Everyone coming to fish with us, seasoned anglers, those who are first timers, newbies and anyone not falling into these categories have understandable hopes and expectations. Our region is known worldwide as the Marlin Capital of the World. And for good reason! Striped Marlin are in great supply here ? but when there is an abundance of bait, or giant squid to eat and other things to snack and munch on there is little crews can do to hook em. Aboard our flagship, CABO MAGIC, Captain Hector has a particular whistle song he uses that more often than not, produces action. Hard to believe, but ask many of the guests who have fished with us and they have seen it for themselves. Some captains try wearing a particular item of clothing when things get crummy as they have been this period. Some deckhands have music they play ? Our first mate Roberto likes ?Black Magic Woman? by Santana. Some captains have a particular prayer they say silently just before they climb aboard. Remember to stuff that ?suerte? in your sox and pockets when packing!

?A day of fishing with nothing caught beats the hooty-hoo out of a long day at work? is certainly appropriate to the 25 groups of visitors who had no luck fishing this week. Guests tell us the crews worked hard changing lures often, changing directions ? There was no one location or area that worked. Some fish were caught on black and purple High5 lures. Some were caught on dorado color High5 lures. Boats on Saturday, the final day of this report, went 38 miles out in all directions. Conditions on the Sea of Cortez as well as the Pacific Side were challenging as the winds from all directions made for lots of chop and some 3-5 waves and swells.

"If it were lush and rich, one could understand the pull, but it is fierce and hostile and sullen. The stone mountains pile up to the sky and there is little fresh water. But we know we must go back if we live, and we don't know why." - Steinbeck, Log from the Sea of Cortez
