I have searched for an insect identification book covering Baja California Sur, but have been unsuccesful. Any help in finding one would be greatly appreciated.

This is a slightly older thread but I ran across it today and thought a few comments would be appropriate.

As far I as know, there is no comprehensive "general" book covering the insect fauna occuring on the Baja Peninsula. There have been several regional treatments of specific insect orders, families, genera but these are/were published in scientific journals and not readily available on your local library book shelf or the offerings of Amazon.com.

Because of similarities of topography, climate patterns and edaphic conditions, the northern part of Baja California reflects biogeographical affinities with that of southern California - both flora and fauna. So you may encounter similar insects there as you do in soCalif and adjacent AZ.

I would suggest a perusal of larger volumes such as the National Audubon Society Field Guides (and other similar publishers) on North American Insects and Spiders for a start. Check the cited literature or bibliography references usually in the back of the book for further reading and avenues to explore.

Most natural history institutions, particularly associated Entomology departments, are at a subcritical level for staff and qualified volunteers. In addition, funding and other resources are seriously strained. Your donations of time, materials or $$$ are always welcomed. Remember, museums and similar facilities belong to everyone, you and me, and everyone is welcomed; from the PhD with a Briar pipe, leather satchel and pile of scientific papers under his arm to the 8-year-old with a butterfly inside of a peanut butter jar.

Should you encounter any strange or interesting insect that you are curious about, I am available to offer an identification or educated guess. My forte is beetles but I am familar with all insect orders in general, and some Arachnids (spiders, scorpions, etc.). I also associate with several world authorities of similar groups that I can consult for a second opinion.
