The Baja 1000 mapo is up on the Score web site. Going over the summit. They are running Matomi wash in reverse. Also going in and out of Mike's Sky Rancho in reverse of the 500.

Thanks TW: http://score-international.com/baja1000/index.ihtml

The total miles is 709 and time limit of 30 hours, on Nov. 18 & 19...

Looks like a technical race: Ensenada to Ojos Negros, to Tres Hermanos, to the 'Summit', to Cohabuzo Jcn., to Tres Pozos, to Borrego Wash, to San Felipe, to the Sulfur Mine, to Llanos de San Fermin, to central Arroyo Matomi, to Diablo Dry Lake, to Mike's Sky Rancho, to Valle Trinidad, to near San Vicente, to Erendira, to Santo Tomas, to Tres Hermanos, Ojos Negros, Ensenada!

Upon reading the press release on the Score link, Baja Nomad Desert Bull is named as a competitor: "...and Tim Sanchez (Class 5/1600)".

I think that we also have Paul 'tunaeater' as an entrant... others too, like 'Baja Bound, I bet!

This course is very similar to the 2001 course except it goes up Matomi instead of Huatamote. That appears to be where they are getting the extra 20+ miles, plus a little more from Tres Hermanos to the hwy. As I recall from that race there is a bad silt hill coming from Mike's after crossing the Observatory road toward to Santa Cruz. I think the Locos Mocos people were there pulling racers out.

Paul are you racing the quad again with the same riders? The section from about RM280 to Matomi has a lot of those fuzz ball cactus. I know because a buddie and I tried to take most of them out on our bikes once. They won.

4 of the 5 riders will be the same. We will pick up one more rider plus Carlos's daughter will do some miles. We should have 5 guys and 1 girl. I'll probably get to do 130 miles or so. Most of the same part as I did in the CODE race when you helped me.

I guess Clara's boast became fact. She said she would not allow the race to come thru Pruetecitos anymore. It tore the road up so bad, and the money they gave her could not return it to the screwed up condition it was before they started. For us downstream, it's kind of a bummer, but we'll travel up to see it around Matomi somewhere.

That's a bummer. I don't know the reasons why and some may not be true, but I've heard many stories over the years where Score has ticked people off because they didn't do what they promised to do. As they say, there are two sides to every story. Not to discount Clara's position, but I have heard where ranchers have come asking for more before the race even started. On the other side if you say you'll do something like grade a road, then do it. I have a friend who once worked for Score years ago and after one of the races he was getting ready to go around the course and check for dead animals and broken fences and Sal stopped him and told him not to go looking for problems, if a rancher had a problem they could come to him. Well so much for PR and building a lasting relationship.

The mountains of trash left by spectators who drive out to watch the race are not always removed either... I see the entry fee is $1,000 dollars.... Xs 300 + racers... should be be enough for a few clean up crews...? At least until the idea of haul out what you haul in becomes normal to the spectators.

When the road is paved through Puertecitos, then that should be okay with Clara? However, a paved road isn't what off road racing is supposed to on... Without a parallel dirt road between Matomi and Gonzaga Bay, there may never be a 1000 going through there again...

TW & David,

I have heard similar stories as TW related.
Remember two sides to all stories.

I agree that 300 X $1000 is a lot of money.
Promotions, permits and paying for permission to use private land is expensive also.
As far as trash goes one should always bring out more than you take in.
Score doesn't charge spectators to watch, I don't feel they should pick up their trash.
I do feel Score should tour the course after the race, make necessary repairs and remove course markings.
Left over course markings lead a lot of play riders to places they maybe shouldn't go.
My .02

Corky

Yes Corky I agree it is not SCORE's responsibility to pick up after messy spectators... However, to keep the race going in Baja, it could be a wise move and take away a big contention brought on by enviros, etc... The money from just one entrant could pay a couple of teams with trucks and shovels...

if you clean it up for them they'll just assume they can dump their party trash again and "someone" will come thru.

very bad idea. Not Score's problem to police idiots. Or manage "children" who don't know how to properly behave.

They are dumping now as if their mamma will come clean up after them... The enviros are going to point out if no race, then no trash... Do you have an idea?

Chris Wilson tells me the silt hills after crossing the observatory road to Santa Cruz is not on this years course. They are going a little different route to miss it.
