Monster Encounter
Fishinrich,s mentioning squid at east cape brought to mind an experence on my trip to Loreto in june with a first timer.
This is a short excerpt from my trip report , some of you fishin junkies might get a kick out it.
Over the years I have used squid for bait both dead and aliveand eaten some as well but these were little guys ,seen some at BOLA that
were fair size but nothing like we ran into while drifting one morning, things were a little slow and we were in the channel between Danzante and
Carmen, I drop some iron over the side deep, while yoyoing I hook this thing felt strange, get it along side and my god its a sea monster, first its the
fountain effect, then the ink attack,Poor Dave grabs the thing and it grabs back!!!!!!!
The people in Loreto I,m sure could hear us first thing you know its in the boat with us and Dave is yelling get this #$%^& off me, now keep
in mind the boat is 12 ft long two grown men 5 or 6 fishing poles tackle boxes life jackets and one very stressed out monster squid, its grabbing
everything in site, looked like it was trying to eat Dave,s face,I had to laugh, wish I had a tape of the whole thing.
Well must go had a ball while there, but would never drive again,my butt is still.mush.

I hope when my time comes the old man will let me bring my rod and the water will be warm and clear

Great story. Memories like that last for ever. I had a similar event with a sea snake that my fishing buddy landed in the boat near San Felipe. All
is well that ends well.

yur right about that drive, baitcast....
want to fly down, get 2 fishing buds and e me!
I read a story in Readers Digest (my grandparents always had 'em around) a few years (20?) ago about a diver in la paz who was pulled down/under about
100' by a giant squid - probably a 40 footer, while on a night dive. he was climbing back into the boat when he was attacked. the monster let him go
just before he figured he'd go unconscious! that story scared the bejeezes out of me, man!!

Monster surprise
Baitcaster,
Enjoyed your story. I am planning a trip to Baja in February. I am planning to take a 12' Porta Bote. I understand from some of your other post
that you use one. I would appreciate any hints you can give me about using a PB in the ocean. I am so far a fresh water fisherman.

one ugly---------
Great pic.......Keep in mind we were in a 12 ft porta bote,a sit down rig with no more than a foot or less of freebroad which put us eyeball to
eyeball with that thing when he was alongside......Never seen something SO ugly and nasty,I notice in the picture the other guy keeping his
distance........But I understand.

porta-bote
Mnbillrv....This was really the first time I used it in the gulf.
Not knowing where your going and the weather you will encounter its hard for me to quess what tips to give.
But I do have some thoughts on the subject.
1.....no long trips
2....stick to places with islands near by,such as BOLA and playa Ligui south of Loreto, you can always find a lee side to wait it out.
You will get a wet ride if the wind blows, and as you know its not selfbailing.but you can always use a flat beercan
Stick to early morning,to late morning,and late afternoon........again I don,t know Feb.
Hooking big fish sitting down is no fun,but can be done, worry about that after you hook the big fish
I took a 6 hp nissan 4 stroke worked great......all in all it worked pretty good, but I would have rather had my 16ft just to long a
tow,4400 miles

Skeet..
The squid above was caught about mile off the marina in Loreto. We have had a good run on squid this past summer, down a little from last year This one caught in October, was "smaller" than ones we took last summer

Kris: Good picture!!
J. R. Up to two years ago while still at Rancho Sonrisa from about May to the end of Sept. the Mexicano fisherman were taking 40 tons a night out of
the Sea Of cortez, cutting of the tenicles, loading them in 40Ft. container and heading for Long Beach where they were further processed and sent by
Air to South Korea
They started as little buggers and grew to the Monsters by around Sept. 1st.If you ever get a chance you want to go on a night trip for Calamari. It
is and experience!!!!
It was hard to keep workers on some of the Americano Homes being built as they were only getting 50 Pesos a day but if they went fishing could make
200 Pesos a night.
If you are on a trip ,Stop at the large View Area at night, the one just before you get to Juancalito. Look down into the water and you will see a
sight of Floresuent color that is unbelievable. This is from the Squid moving around and near the surface late at night.
