This moonrise is a fishing forecast....
I am getting things ready here at the casa for a fishing day manana. Going after yellowtail primarily, but will change targets if need be..anything
to put a fish dinner on the table. We are desparate for some fresh fish..but the signs don't look good.
That thought jumped into my mind because of the shape of the moon in this photo I took early today on the patio. Did I ever tell you about the way
the moon's outline can tell you when to fish? I did? Surely not?? Okay-okay...so I did tell you already. Repetition is pertinent to fishing. Plus
I am getting older and tend to repeat repeat myself often often.
So.. as some of you will remember, you can plan your fishing trip on this bit of folklore....with "The 'moon-holding-water' fishing forecaster."
Alas, as you will note, the shape of today's moon in the photo would not hold much water, if any at all. But fish we must, so tomorrow will be a good
test of the old superstition. Come around manana and I will tell you how I did. San Marcos Island near north of Mulege is the destination.

If the moon will hold water.....
Just in case anyone is not familiar with this old method of looking at the moon phases to forecast fishing success...here it is again:
The day before fishing..or early that morning...take a look at the moon if possible. Note the shape of it's outline. Imagine pouring water into that
shape. Will it hold that water? If so, then the fishing the next day..or current day..will be GOOD. If not, then maybe you should go off-roading or
do something landwise. Manuel Diaz taught me this trick many moons ago right here at Coyote Bay and it has been my guideline for a long, long time.
I find myself using it everywhere I fish.
Another forecaster is watching the stars to predict winds the following day.
Calm mornings: If the stars directly overhead are 'still'...not twinkling...then at least the morning will be calm.
Calm afternoons: If the stars on the horizon are still.
Calm all day: Both overhead and horizon still.
Opposites for windy days. Twinkles = Wind!
(Mares-Tails are good wind signs, too, but that's a new ballgame.)
Let's see...it is now 4:14 a.m. I will go outside now and check the wind indicator.
Grrr...not so good, but could be worse. The stars overhead are bright and still, but the horizon twinkles. So...calm morning going out, but we are
going to have some wind coming back in the afternoon.
Let's hope it doesn't look like this!!

This is a favorite saying of fishermen, who use a halo around the moon as an indicator of fishing conditions.

When your entire case of Pacifico and a bottle of Tequila are empty in the morning....you should not fish....wind or no wind....
